Regretful purchase - waste of money, waste of bread – With a kitchen full of Breville appliances which have stood the test of time, I purchased this toaster expecting another quality product without reading the reviews - BIG mistake. There is NO consistency with toasting, the same time setting can create warm bread one day, charcoal the next. The frozen bread setting is useless, usually resulting in… Read more
patches of charcoal on otherwise barely toasted bread. The timing needs to be adjusted depending whether it is the first time toasting for the day or if the toaster has already warmed up and it is incredibly inconsistent. So much bread has been wasted since we purchased this poor product. Very disappointed and do not recommend!
Very dodgy that this product stops working just outside warranty period – I liked this toaster when I first bought it, but just outside the warranty period I started having issues with the lever raising up and down, and Breville did not want to know about it, even though it seems to be quite a trend with this model and brand. I purchased based on very positive Choice.com.au recommendation, however they have now… Read more
withdrawn this recommendation based on feedback that this product fails soon after it is covered by warranty.
I don't expect a toaster to last forever, but I it's very dodgy that reviews I have now read show that this product fails when it does.
I would not buy a Breville toaster after this experience.
Long lasting – I bought this toaster 7 years ago. I use it for all types of bread and crumpets. It still works, toasts bread fine, I gave never had an issue with the lever not staying down. The only issue I had was after a couple of years the description next to each button on top wore off and I had to print out labels and stick on. I hope the method for labelling each button has updated now as I would purchase again once my current toaster stops working. Show details

Expensive Landfill – Well, I reckon it's been just over a year since I was last on the toaster purchasing roundabout and after much deliberating I decided to shell out the cash (around $150 from memory) for the 4 slice version of this overpriced hunk of junk. It was ok (as in it effectively toasted bits of bread) for a couple of months, literally a couple of months… Read more
before it started to decide that about 15 seconds was long enough to complete it's designed task more often than not and pop up. You could push is down and up it would come again, unsurprisingly not the least bit toasted. It would work sometimes but the frequency with which it would successfully toast diminished until a couple of months ago when operating it will now trip my powerboard safety switch. Given the amount of similarly themed reviews and and complete lack of response from the company responsible it seems that my experience if far from isolated. They clearly could not care less. Buy Australian they say... No chance I'll be making that mistake again, not if it is manufactured by Breville.
So, probably a month or so out of warranty and into the landfill it will go. I get the impression I should just be glad it didn't toast my entire house by setting it on fire. If I can prevent one person from purchasing a Breville product resulting one more faulty appliance in the ground I'll take that as my good deed for the day.
It's been perfect so far – I have to admit I checked the reviews here before purchasing this toaster. Having done so I had my chair and whip at the ready when I first turned it on just in case this appliance decided to turn on me causing grievous bodily harm and even worse poorly cooked toast. I decided to go with a Breville despite the reviews because a housemate had… Read more
an older Breville unit and they moved out taking it with them. It worked well and presented no issues and would have been 2 or 3 years old.
I have now had my new toaster for a couple of months and it has worked flawlessly. I put the slider to midway or just a little less making minor adjustments based on the type of bread. Crumpets and muffins have likewise been cooked flawlessly. It is just a toaster so I'm not going to get too excited but it does its job well and it is very easy to live with.
I thought I would add my experience because I think the reviews here are not altogether representative. Those people that genuinely got a dodgy unit have my sympathies but it is not representative of my experience with this toaster and generally with Breville appliances of which I have a few and are excellent.
*Update: Over a year of usage and I haven't burnt myself or the house or the toast.
Happy - But – Bought the four-slice toaster as the latest model of our previous Breville 4/slice toaster. Were happy with the previous model and got many years of use out of it before it folded. This model has somewhat different timing display but does essentially the same as our old model. Before purchasing read the reviews and noted the complaint that it… Read more · 1
would not stay down. Went ahead anyway as it is the only four-slice model that met our preferences. It cooks well - reasonably evenly but does tend to have trouble staying down from time-to-time. Occasionally I have to press it down two or more times to get the mechanism to catch in the 'cook' mode. Sometimes it will pop-up on its own part way through cooking for no reason. Have found that pressing it down and holding down for a second seems to work best. As such, I can live with this issue as long as it does not get any worse. In all other regards we are happy with the toaster.
Update June 2016: Since writing this review our toaster problem got worse rather than better, with it popping up multiple times for no apparent reason. We ended up taking it back under warranty and the GGuys replaced it for us. The new one is working fine.

FIVE FLIPPIN STARS – I have a bit of an obsession with kitchen gadgets - I paid $117 for this toaster. It is divine. I wouldn't have it any other way. You can lift the lever and check how your toast is going without stopping the toasting process. There's a light indicator of how much longer until the time is up. There's a button ("a bit more") you press and then put… Read more
your toast down and it'll put just the right amount of extra toastiness that you need. You can tell it to only cook one side of your bread/bagel/crumpet/whatever. Because the four slice function makes it long, you can also toast your artisan breads that don't fit in a normal toaster. Fancy! It's the best toaster I've ever owned and like I said I'm not stingy on price when it comes to kitchen gadgets. This product is TOPS.
After 3 Years Works Like A Charm – Bought this beauty in May 2017 for $99 from Bing Lee. Has toasted evenly and perfectly every time. Crumpet setting is awesome, as is the "bit more" function. Occasionally it doesn't hold down on first press but a 2nd gentle press and it's locked firmly in place. Show details
Like it and have bought twice but also broken twice – Highly recommend when you buy it buy the extended warranty. I am on the second one I've purchased however I've had 3 altogether as one was replaced under warranty. The first one the element went in the right hand side. The second one (free warranty replacement) the button on the right (the side I use most failed) - I must admit I've pressed… Read more
that button 3000 times. The third one the element has gone again. I will probably buy again but would like a product that lasts a long time not just 3-5 years. Next time longest extended warranty I can get and I won't lose the receipt.
Negative reviews
waste of money – I make my own bread so wanted a four slice toaster to toast larger slices. I won't be buying Breville again. The setting controls don't give great results but worse is the push down lever to start toasting is a cheap mechanism and broke not long after buying it. I have to hold it down now to keep it on. Rubbish item. Show details
Last Breville toaster ever – Like most reviews here, we loved this expensive toaster for the first couple of years, until it started refusing to keep the bread down long enough to toast. Pops up randomly after a random time, from a few seconds to half done. Just out of the 1 year warranty, (which is ridiculous for a toaster, which independent sites say should last 6-8 years).… Read more
We have always used Breville, but will be reluctant to purchase their products in the future, based on this experience.
Great toaster but doesn’t last long – Just like everyone else , this toaster doesn’t last more than a 14 months , don’t buy one . Unless you only expect a toaster that lasts one year stay away from this one , good design but terrible quality . Show details

Not a good toaster – I bought one of these toasters when they first came out, wasnt cheap but worked really well. I recently replaced it with the same model and am very disappointed with it, it doesn't toast like the first one did, if you turn it up too high it burns the bread but doesn't toast on the lower settings. Wont be buying another one. Show details

two replacements in 16 months. Rubbish – Don't bother. First replacement was 9 months after purchase. Stopped working all together. Second replacement was 7 months later - only one side would toast. Great when it worked but poor quality and wholly unreliable. Buy any toaster but this one. Couldn't be worse. Show details
Warranty expires and the toaster expires with it! – When we purchased this toaster it was exactly what we wanted! For 12 months it worked like a charm- We are a family of 5 and we used it regularly. Within 6 weeks of the warranty expiring (12 months) the toaster handle won’t hold down. In order to use the toaster, you have to stand with it (while in use) and hold the handle down in place for it to toast! I would NOT recommend this toaster- it’s not with the price tag! Show details
Even toasting and fits large sourdough slices – This toaster is stylish and has a lot of handy features, including a 'little bit more' function for when you don't want to re-start the process. There is also a progress bar that shows you how far along in the cooking process you are. Overall though, our favourite feature of this toaster is the even heating. Plus it is the perfect size for larger bits of bread (or 4 standard size). Show details
Faulty Product – Toasts for five or ten seconds and then pops up regardless of applied setting. You need to stand near the toaster and keep pushing it down to collect your burnt toast. Waste of money and would recommend avoiding this product at all costs. Totally ripped off by Breville. Will not be purchasing Breville in the future. Show details
13 Months old Big spark and died ! – Worked fine for the first few months then started burning toast on same low setting every now and then. Eventually, just after a year, flashed a big spark and cut off power in the house. Harvey Norman advised to contact Breville at which point you realise what you're dealing with. They basically could not give a ...... Do yourself a favour and DO NOT BUY a Breville. Show details
Undocumented feature: Random toasting time – No matter what time you select the toaster makes it’s own decision. Awesome potential however product toast timer doesn’t work. Burns or under cooks on a whim. POS - Don’t buy it. Terrible after sales services. Sent multiple email with no response. The irony is we had the same problem with an earlier Breville two slice toaster and bought this expecting it would fix the problem. Show details
Does not work for long- just pops up all the time without toasting – Worked great for a very short while - then inconsistent browning no matter what setting or bread/crumpet you used didn't make a difference --> and then After about 18 months use it consistently pops ups less than a few seconds after pressing the start lever - obviously not browning the bread at all. We have persisted with it by holding the lever… Read more
manually down but now can't put up with it any longer and looking for an alternative that will actually cook toast and crumpets as it states it will, Not a big ask. After reading these reviews it looks like a common problem. Would definitely NOT recommend this toaster or buy it again. Very disappointed as wanted a long slice toaster that had a crumpet option but wanted one that worked - not this one.
Purchased from Myer - unfortunately didn't keep receipt (thought 'what could go wrong with a toaster) or would have returned it a few months after purchase
Absolutely the best toaster – This is one of the best toasters I have ever purchased. The ability to cook 4 slices at once saves time and effort. I just love the crumpet function which cooks crumpets mainly on one side only too perfection. The look and list makes it easy to see if the toast needs abit more time and makes it easier to remove from the toaster when done Show details
Rubbish product, Rubbish after care service. Indicative of current Australian Standards!!! – We have owned our ($129) 4 slice toaster for approx. 21 months...used it barely 18 months. Its never been great, with the lever stretched to maximum darkness for toasting and the bread is still blonde. However, we pursued with the rubbish toaster as the next day, it would have to be adjusted to 2 and it will burn the bread. We just went with… Read more
it. Not sure what the Crumpet function does...appears to be no different to other functions. Then, just 2 weeks ago, the toaster pops the bread up every 2 seconds with the cancel button flashing. Almost like the product is possessed, the cancel button flashes and beeps even when turned off at the mains! The toaster is regularly cleaned out, in theory, it should not have just STOPPED working. Of course, its out of replacement warranty, but still under STATUTORY WARRANTY (2 years people....the big companies won't tell you that and will not honour it!). When contacting Breville, they acknowledged my email (at least) BUT offered a replacement for $75 with free delivery....WTH??? As I wasn't keen on even receiving a response, I went to KMART, spent $35, am anticipating this toaster will last me 12 months, in which case, I can go and buy another one and still be out in front financially than taking up the 'dud' offer from Breville to pay $75 for a piece of crap. When I conveyed this to the 'Ask Us' CSO, the reply I got was "Thank you for your reply" Regards...[name removed]
Bravo Breville. Another useless Australian company with another useless Australian appliance.

Breville burns Its bridges with this lemon – Bought this 4 slicer for $80 at the final days of Dick Smith, and thought it was a bargain. What a mistake. Got about 12 months of performance out of it before it started to inconsistently cook the toast, prematurely eject toast and refuse to stay down on occasion. Finally refused to start today and it promptly got binned after about 20 months of… Read more
inconsistent use. I just want to point out that the electric toaster was invented in 1893 and that after 125 years Breville still can't work out how to make one work for consumers. I would have given them the benefit of the doubt except all of the negative reviews on this product show this to be the standard, not the exception.
Fantastic toaster. LOVE IT. So flexible – Best toaster that we have ever had. Buy the 4 slice option was the best idea. We can do crumpets, pancakes, focassia, bread rolls and standard roast too. The pre-defined options to reheat (“a bit more”), defrost (“frozen”), and specifically toast “crumpets or fruit bread” come in handy. You can also cancel toast with one click if you think its’s… Read more
burning. One of my favourite Breville products! Worth the extra investment. It has a pull-out base tray for cleaning which is better than most toasters but unfortunately the entire base is not removable. Bought our about two years ago and still as good as new. Slightly buffed stainless finish means finger prints are less noticeable too.
Bought from a The Good Guys with Conceirge warranty but have not needed to use warranty protection as yet.
A great toaster! – We purchased the toaster a couple of weeks ago and so far we are very happy! It toasts very evenly and we love the features! Our only two complaints are that the stainless on the outside looks a little bit bumpy on the edges (obviously can’t be helped because it is stainless) and also that it would be nice if the toaster was a little bit deeper.… Read more
Other than that - it’s great! We went from the Breville four slice Smart Toaster to this one, and are much happier with the size and weight - it’s so much easier to store!
Another shameful yet expensive product from Breville – An inconsistent toaster that is not worth your top dollar. The bread is so dry and the degree it toasts the bread on the same setting varies so wildly. I go to my parents home, throw some bread into their $15 Kmart toaster and the bread comes out wonderfully. Been having toast nearly every day for 30 years and this is by far the driest toast ever. Show details
Don't buy this product – This is the worst toaster I've ever had. The toast gets stuck, doesn't cook, then all the lights flash and I have to turn it off, so I never have hot cooked toast when I want it. Then I somehow have to try and get the bread out of the slots with the arms jammed shut. Appalling. What a rip off at $130.00. It's going on the garbage collection pile… Read more
and I will never buy a Breville appliance again.I should have returned it a long time ago but it was a gift.
Looks good, doesn't work! – As other reviewers have noted, this toaster has some sort of fault that causes it to pop up a few seconds after pressing the lever down. This usually happens a few times before you can get it to stay down and it always pops up just as you walk away! Very frustrating. Never consistent, burns sometimes, cooks only one side other times?! have several other Breville appliances which we are happy with, this toaster is not one of them.
Edit: We had several other Breville appliances we were happy with! Bought a kettle at the same time as toaster and now that has started playing up, starts to boil, stops, starts again, stops! Can't boil more than two cups of water. Hoping our Breville coffee machine doesn't break down now!
Breville 4 slice toaster – I recently purchased our Breville 4 slice toaster and now it is not toasting properly. I normally love all of Breville's products but this one hasn't come up to standard. I have to put it on 4 or 5 for it to brown, and sometimes I have to start it all over again toasting. Show details
Used everyday - still going fine @ 15 months – LOVE the 'lift & look' function, LOVE the 'a bit more' button too, like the crumpet button (cooked a lot of crumpets over winter) - worked ok/same? before I remembered there was a special button though.... Don't like how it QUITE OFTEN immediately pops up when started (can be with one slice or multi slices) within seconds (just after you… Read more
walked away to do something). Is this a balancing issue? Frustrating... but..
This toaster has lasted longer than last 3 toasters, cooks toast - cooks nice too (not burnt outside/soggy middle like last toaster) doesn't burn ever, bit temperamental but quite OK for a middle range toaster.
Would definitely re-purchase again as it's held up to daily family use (inc teenagers): morning, sometimes lunch & afternoon tea as well. Easy to clean & labels actually still on after cleaning too. Yep, pretty good.
Waste of money – So disappointed with this Breville product. Paid a lot of money for nothing. I had a sunbeam toaster for 18 years without any bother, then bought this one and had it replaced in first month. Then second one began popping up randomly every couple of seconds....SO FRUSTRATING! It's a simple thing like a toaster, seriously! Show details
Deceitful toaster – Very disappointed in this product , even on the lowest setting with the LED on one we still have to watch the toast or it will burn , I could cook a better piece of toast on the fire out in my backyard !! I will be going back to a $15 reliable toaster , at least it will be trustworthy Show details
Worst toaster I've ever had – This is by far the worst toaster I've ever owned - and I've owned $7 toasters in the past! I have other Breville products and never had an issue so I thought I was buying a trusted brand. But like other reviews have stated, this does NOT cook toast anywhere near evenly. I've had the toaster about a year now, and in the past few weeks it's got… Read more
worse - the edges of the toast now go black straight away and the rest of the "toast" is white. It is a piece of junk that will be going in the bin this weekend - I'll probably go back to a $7 toaster. I'll certainly never buy Breville again.
Hopeless!! – Bread would continually pop up after pushing the lever down. This happened regularly, usually after walking away from the toaster. Very frustrating and would sometimes happen 5 - 6 times before staying down. Would not recommend to anyone. Ended up throwing ours in the bin and bought a cheaper toaster that works beautifully Show details
Working Fine – Purchased after old toaster died. Seems to be working fine for us at the moment. Could have better labeling on the buttons, had to read the instructions to understand what all the colours mean on the buttons. The lifter could go up a little higher as we have burnt our fingers trying to get the toast out. But on the whole it is going well. Show details
