  BIR100

Worth every dollar – I had this iron for 10 years now, this iron is still staying strong. Does the job if you iron once a fortnight. Bloody awesome. Very easy to clean and handle. Isn't too heavy. Even if you wrap the chord around the thing, if won't fray. I had purchased multiply irons in the past and they kept overheating & cutting out the power, not sure why. This iron doesn't do that.  Show details

Overheating iron – We have had the BIR150 for a few years and it has been an excellent iron. However, last week I was ironing some moleskin trousers and with a light touch scorched them. I made the mistake of putting the iron down very briefly on the ironing board and it was blackened and melted as well. The iron went from normal operation to extremely hot without… Read more ·  1

me noticing it. I am not sure if this is a common problem - I haven't been able to contact Breville (Christmas holidays) - and there is no email address for them on their site. Not sure how hot it would have got if I didn't turn it off so users may have to be careful with older irons.

Excellent All Round Iron and Best Buy for Price ($49) – When our trusty old Sunbeam fell and broke (a bit of a household mystery as to who was responsible... eventually blame fell, as usual, to the dog and peace was blissfully restored) I needed to buy an iron quickly since the washing was piling up and we were running out of nicely ironed clothes. Because the two brands I've previously had, both… Read more ·  1

Sunbeam and Tefal, worked very well I went into the store intent to buy either of these. My goal was not pay more than $60-70. The sunbeams looked quite good, but the one similar to our old one was over $70 and the cheaper ones had a steel plate rather than a teflon plate. Also, the build quality of the cheaper ones looked worse than the Sunbeam we'd been using. So... onto the Tefals...

We'd used one of these before and I like the multiple holes for the steam (across the iron's plate rather than around the edge), plus the glide free surface is, from memory, long lasting. However, the more expensive ones were filled with water from the bottom (!) -- not very ergonomic. What happens is we place the iron pointy end up on the ironing board, get the water, and fill it up. For the more expensive Tefals, it would mean pointing the iron downwards and somehow filling up whilst holding it. The cheaper Tefal that filled up from the pointing end didn't seem too well balanced, with the cord running under the balancing bit. This knocked it out of the running, must to some misgivings.

There were only other two brands in the store. One was a Philips (? from memory), which looked very good, but were $80+ for the cheap ones; and the Breville BIR300 for $49, which I bought.

Good points:

- Great steam

- Good ironing surface

- Reasonable instructions, although (like always) a bit more would help

- 24 month warranty

- stable when placed down

- pour in from the top

- solid build

- large water chamber

- clear maximum water marker

- clear and solid dial for temperature

- light on the handle to show the iron's on

Not so good points:

- solid build == slightly heavier (not a problem for me, but may be for others)

- Dark plastic on water chamber makes it hard to check at a glance the water level, unlike the lighter blues

- has a maximum marker, but no minimum marker for the water level

Overall

- Excellent iron for the price. I hope the teflon surface lasts, but a 24 month warranty from a leading manufacturer somewhat offsets any concerns in this area. Inexpensive; good quality build; great steam; 24 month warranty; non-slip handle No minimum water level marker; slightly heavy

Excellent – This is a fantastic iron which I highly recommend, I only wish I'd bought one sooner instead of struggling on with my old one. It is a great weight iron which means less effort to iron out wrinkles but is still light enough to be comfortable to use. It heats very quickly and has an indicator light to let you know when it has reached temperature,… Read more

Good – The large handle took a bit of getting used to, could be a problem for someone with small hands. Had this iron for 6 months, used every day - so far it is performing well. The Teflon sole plate appears to be durable with no scratches or build up so far. This iron replaces a Sunbeam followed by a Mistral - I had problems with leaking water tanks… Read more

after 12 months in both units. Persistence is required to access Mistral customer care!! Good iron for the price (around $50). Handles delicates to denim very well. The steam setting is excellent. Large handle, feels heavy until you are used to it.

Excellent – This is the best iron I have owned. It was a good low price (approximately $50.00). It has all the basic features I could ask for. It works exceptionally well without creating iron shine or water marks on clothing. It has a good grip handle and is very easy to store away with the cord wrapping easily around the base. For the money I don't think… Read more
