We like and often use the "A Bit More" button, as well as the "Lift & Look". The crumpet button works well for crumpets and English muffins, and the frozen button does help to toast frozen bread well. The fruit button can be hit and miss depending on the type of fruit bread you use. Thin bread tends to burn, but the thick slice or sourdough fruit bread cooks well.
We're a household of 7-8, so the toaster is used most days and several times in a row. This is where we've had issues using the toaster because of the sheer back-to-back volume. Basically, the toaster will just keep cooking and not lift, signalled by flashing buttons and a clicking sound. Not sure if it's a sign of overheating, so we have to switch off and unplug, rescue the bread, and leave the toaster a day. I was stressed about it the first time it happened 5 years ago, but now it's just par for the course.
We also call our toaster Trip since it's usually the appliance to trip our electricity off if I've got other things running (like the dishwasher and/or dryer). I now also plan its use so that breakfast and lunchtimes don't shut our house down because Trip spikes the electricity.

Smart Toast 4 Slice Long". At first glance the toaster has a touch of elegance and yet I'm here to work appearance. It can fit up to 4 slices of normal (square) bread, but not 4 continental slices (like your rye or farm bake), with those you would stick to just 2 slices. It can toast fruit bread with aide of the dedicated button press, crumpets and even bagels, which is pretty good if I do say. There is no spring loaded lever to push down to start toasting, just press the Toast button and the bread lowers in to the toaster and starts toasting, when finished it lifts it gently and beeps once. Now this is all nice but the real thing is, what we all want is a toaster that performs to level of the price that it commands in the shops which is darn high for a toaster (most places its over $200), and this is where Breville has missed the mark. Toasting performance is mediocre and I would say it doesn't warrant the price its commanding. Ok before I continue lets agree that there are a couple of factors that determine how good or bad bread will toast, like how thick the slice is, the moisture and the sugar content of the loaf. Too moist and it takes longer. Higher sugar content (like fruit breads) toast quicker just like thicker slices, and thats why there are controls to change how long to toast and temperature adjustment for the fruit breads (button press). But this doesn't count from the patchy result left on the surface of the slices. There is no eveness of toasting colourisation and a distinctive bar pattern on the toast. When you look inside of the slots while cooking you will notice that some parts of the elements look hotter than others as well as, some elements seem to lie flatter against the backing while other protrude more outward. Which to me makes no sense as each element should receive the same amount of electricity and be equally hot. At the base of the toaster you'll find a crumb tray, just remove the tray and discrard the crumbs, sounds good, but some bright spark in the Breville design team thought to make the tray too small to catch all the crumbs, maybe as joke or they just want you shake your toaster to remove the rest of the crumbs. As for the power cord, it looks as if it could wound up at the base of the toaster as a 'stay', yeah I've tried and no it won't stay there or be able wound there which makes the cord a nuisance when not in use. Overall I like the look of the toaster, I like the way it has a touch of elegance about it, press a button and way it goes but in all honesty end result counts and this is where it lets you down. I'm not sure if I would buy this toaster again. :( Now before I end this and some of you say I must not have learnt to use it properly, let me tell you that I've had this toaster for almost 6 months now and I've tried many different breads, bagels, muffins and crumpets in that period, I use it every day and the results are always consistent.

Toasters really do get a bagging on reviews, mostly from breakdowns and malfunctions or uneven toasting .
I had replaced my Sunbeam Cafe series with another Sunbeam which I returned and you can see my review on that one. This toaster is not immuned to those one star reviews , however as most were on wear and tear and failure I have not had this long enough to comment.
I will however comment on what this is supposed to do and that is to toast. The toaster itself is diecast with brushed aluminium fully auto button press . An impressive looking beast but does it toast? Well , yes it does and it does it more evenly than any toaster I have ever owned . Put your toast in and make your selection and away you go. Big fat Artisan breads can also be used in this toaster and it also has a fruit bread setting and a crumpet setting which allows you to just leave your heat setting where you left it and the toaster does the rest . A double press of the crumpet button brings up the blue light for fruit bread .
Average time is one minute to over 2 minutes depending on what you are toasting.
Many people can't figure out why there is a 5 setting on this . The reason is this setting is for dense Artisan breads not your airy fairy commercial supermarket style offerings which will get burnt to a crisp.
All toasting in my tests were even to within about 90% on my reckoning and I just left my setting on 1.8 plenty high enough for me.

It is now May 2023, the toaster is toasting the left side of the bread and barely touching the right side, which, requires you to turn the bread around to get the other side to toast. It is almost as if the toaster instructions are stuck on crumpet mode, because this is what it does on crumpet mode. I am now in the market for another toaster and it wont be a Breville.

wether your toasting bread from frozen, wether you want to simply defrost, you can even state that your toasting a bagel or crumpet. The dial for how much you want your toast cooked has allot of different levels so you can precisely select your preferred level of toasting. My only real complaints about the toaster would be that it's power cord is somewhat short so if allot of space between your toaster and the outlet exists there may be some difficulties. The toaster is also somewhat pricy given some other models do offer other features in the same price range, and at the end of the day it isn't much different to any regular and cheaper toaster, but still good value for what you get!

got the toaster replaced under warranty - The toast cooks more at the top than the bottom, so we need to flip the toast upside down then use the “bit more” button to get it evenly toasted, but that is a common issue with toasters and at least we aren’t burning toast since the “bit more” function gives it a quick extra burst - The motorised lowering arm is starting to get loud and jerky, so I fear that it will fail in the near future, though it hasn’t yet.
Based on the other reviews it would seem that I can’t expect it to last for five years, but I’d still be tempted to buy another toaster like this because I’d struggle to manage without the “bit more” function! We love our toast!

I only wish the finishing ‘beep’ happened before the toast began to rise - it always did it after the toast had finished rising and had begun to cool.
Unfortunately our toaster came to a sad premature death because I accidentally dropped butter into the left slot. It lasted another month (burnt butter smell) and then ultimately shorted the left heating elements. Right side continued to work but decided it was safer to dispose of it.
We have upgraded to the 4-wide slice toaster and will review again after some time.

If we had bought a $9 Kmart or BigW toaster then just over 2 years occasional use would be fair, at almost 20 times the price it's unacceptable, particularly with no service parts available from the maker. This one failed on 05 08 2019 (7 months) no more warranty. Elements in one side not working. As the warranty is pro rata there was no replacement should we have wanted to try again with this brand. spark at the top which I thought was maybe the element trying to light - kept watching and it appeared to light and then went out- then started a tiny fizzle of fire. business. I’m hoping that this at least breaks down again before the warranty expires after 2 years. Fully expect to request a third or fourth replacement. It’s a great toaster when it works but the poor quality is beyond unacceptable.

easily fix that so, I attempted to source a replacement part. I contacted Breville who said parts are not available but they would offer me a discount on a new toaster.
I m annoyed about this for a few reasons.
Firstly, this sort of thing has happened to us before. We had the element blow on our Breville electric jug and were told that there were no replacement parts, but we could buy a replacement jug at a discount price. When our $1300 espresso machine died just (outside Breville's 12 months manufacturer warranty) it got replaced (rather than repaired) under our JB HiFi extended warranty. Can't have been an easy fix if they replaced rather than repaired a $1300 appliance.
Secondly, I contacted Choice who tell me that at around $190 (you can buy this toaster cheaper now), this was a mid to high range toaster that should last 4 to 6 years. Incidentally, Choice have a good article on product life here: https://bit.ly/2uPZxZV
Thirdly, consumer law says Breville have a legal obligation to provide parts for a reasonable period. Unfortunately what constitutes is a reasonable period is hard to define. However, from what Choice said it would have been 4 to 5 years. Hell, you can still buy a BTA830 toaster. So, maintainability is poor.
Look at it this way, electrical heating elements are like incandescent lights they won't last forever. However, I don't have to replace my stove every time an oven element blows. I would consider that to be unnecessary expensive and bad for the environment.
For me, the same principal applies applies here.

So I had it replaced a second time. The third toaster was working fine for about 2 weeks, when it went on the blink (literally) all the lights would blink simultaneously, and the toaster wouldn't work at all (as has been reported on many review sites for this model toaster). I tried power resetting it a few times, and also tried several button combinations, but nothing worked. So I listened carefully to the toaster as it was going through its start-up cycle, and realized it was probably the motorized lift mechanism that was stuck in a loop due to one of the sensors not being triggered, so I applied some gentle percussive maintenance which fixed the problem, and the toaster has been fine ever since (knock on wood).
Having said this, the staff at Myer, both online and in store have been extremely helpful.
OK. the third unit lasted about 5 months then the element stopped working. The motor and all the other buttons appeared to work, but the element would not heat up, so it failed to do the one thing a toaster must do..... toast.
This time I returned it for a refund and have purchased a cheap toaster from Kmart for the interim. If the could fix their QC issues and the reliability I would purchase this toaster again as it did a great job while it worked.
Is it too much to expect, a toaster which actually toasts well. By the way, the cheap Kmart toaster leaves the top quarter of each slice pretty much un-toasted which is a common problem I have struck, even with brand named toasters I have owned in the past.
Bulky for no good reason – This product is OK. Honestly for its price i dont think its worth it. There are more sleek toasters out there that take less space in the kitchen and preform the same task. So a quick email to Breville and a trip to Bing Lee has got us a new (free) toaster under the two-year warranty - exactly the same model as the previous one.
I've given this only a 4 star rating because I really think that a toaster should last more than a couple of years before failing, especially as this is a relatively premium-priced product. Having said that though, it has worked fantastically in all the time we have had it. ------- Update December 2018 - I've downgraded again to a 3 star rating because within a year the replacement model that we got from Bing Lee now only works on one of the two slots. Quality control on this appliance is clearly not all it should be. When it works, it's good. Unfortunately, I don't think that's good enough. ------ Update July 2019 - The third toaster has now died! From pretty much as soon as we got it we noticed a buzzing on it when it was sitting idle on the kitchen counter. Clearly there are some significant quality control problems on this toaster!!! There are a number of reviews on this site which are saying the same thing - so if buying this toaster please be prepared that you are paying $150 or so for a product with a shelf-life as long as the guarantee. I would say, however, that the warranty department at Breville have been pretty good at shipping out a new toaster for us every time without drama - perhaps they are very experienced at doing this :)

grit. The mechanism stuck in the down position and no amount of shaking would free the sliding carriage. Repair was very difficult and not to be attempted by anyone not familiar with appliances, electrical circuits, and specialized tools. The inside heaters do not heat up as much or as fast as the outside heaters which may cause concern the toaster is not working or most likely will produce uneven results on regular toast. Toasters break after lots of use. Best to buy cheap disposable if you believe you might be very disappointed when this model gets stuck.

to heat up as you use it for more rounds. I can not imagine what setting 6 does but guessing it would be a rapid way of producing charcoal and testing the smoke alarm.
I put up with it for a few months and just stopped toasting the rye bread my husbands favourite, that always had burnt edges no matter how closely I watched it. My granddaughter complained that toast always had a burnt toast in that machine so I decided for that price $179 ( though I got it on special) it should be able to toast properly and without me having to stand by and watch it. I rang Breville and after asking me to explain the problem twice, gave me a return code and I was able to collect a replacement from local djs. That was straightforward.
Optimistically I tried the replacement and.....it is exactly the same. The first round is burnt on the edges with main part fine. The second round is burnt all over. I can get resonable toast if I stand by and check every few seconds....like those old toasters of my youth which you opened sideways and burnt your fingers as you rotated the bred.
I don't think I should have to micromanage what claims to be an automatic toaster. I have it on the lowest setting. There is no where to go. So I am back to ringing Breville. I would like my money back this time. It's a pest having to ring then having to go back to the shop. I don't have any confidence a third would be any better. ProductReview.com.au....Several times before today, we have had issues with the toaster becoming jammed, with two normal slices of sandwich bread in it. It will make a clicking noise - (obviously the release mechanism trying to engage). After a few seconds, all lights on the display will begin flashing. The first time this happened, the toaster continued cooking, which could have led to a fire if I wasn't watching and had not turned the power off at the wall. Today again, the toaster malfunctioned. Fed up with trying to get it to release, I rang the Breville Customer Service Centre. They advised I should return it to the retailer. No suggestions about why this might be happening or what I could do to possibly fix it.
