All of the fancy features in this $240 toaster, Lift and Look, A Bit More, etc are great. However, for me,the fundamental requirement for a toaster is to toast and to toast EVENLY. My toaster will brown the top half of the bread and leave the bottom half six shades light. In fact, the Lift and Look function is used to invert the bread halfway… Read more

I bought this toaster on a friend’s recommendation. I’ve had it about 6 weeks and would not buy it again. At $219 it is no better than the $69 toaster it replaced. It does not toast both sides evenly, burns the fruit toast on its designated setting (but interestingly, not on a normal setting) and leaves the crumpets raw on one side on their… Read more

designated setting. The photos show my fruit toast this morning cooked for less than two minutes from frozen on the fruit toast setting: burnt one side and raw the other. Cooked another piece for the same time on a normal setting and was fine. The toaster looks good and seems well made so it probably means I am going to be stuck with this for a long while yet! Edit: After having read other reviews regarding the crumpet/ fruit toast button, I realised I needed to press the button TWICE to cook fruit toast. Checked the instruction booklet but it doesn’t mention that. Now toasting satisfactorily.

Great for a faultless breaky!! – Its hard to get excited over a toaster...but this one is really special! I don't like burning my toasts and I don't like them getting stuck in the toaster either...how frustrating!!! With this device, you are almost guarantee a perfect toast every time!!! Without getting too excited, I have to say it is very well designed. There are a little… Read more

trays under each section to collect crumbs, no need to turn the whole thing upside down anymore! I just loooooooove the extra large slots which allows me to toast bagels and thick slices of crusty bread. I also love the different time settings which makes it easier to choose the perfect level of toastiness! I don't use the crumpet setting at all so can't really comment about it...never ate a crumpet...perhaps it lacks to my Australian life experience! There's also a "Bit more" button, if your toast is not just right yet...but I found it a bit useless since I have to press it several times if I chose the wrong setting for my toast.

We really bought it because of the 4 slots and the size of them and this toaster really deliver. We have used it a lot, for many years and have had no issue whatsoever.

Not too bad for a Breville – I had reservations at first purchasing an expensive Breville toaster because from previous experiences the Breville brand has let me down with the reliability and longevity of their products. I purchased the frost blue model and I find the smart toaster great. Once set up and adjusted it toasts bread perfectly. I like the A Bit More and the Lift… Read more

and Look button. It also toast crumpets really well.

There are a couple of shortcomings with this product. The plastic on the crumb trays melted out of shape and the toaster itself collects crumbs and is hard to clean. The flat spot under the bread should be more vertical to encourage the crumbs to fall onto the crumb tray. One thing parents should consider before purchasing this product is the safety of having a press button toaster. If plugged in and left on the buttons on top could easily be bumped or pressed causing the toaster to operate. I had an unfortunate experience with a Tupperware that was left on top of the toaster but it I isolated the power as per the instructions it would have never happened.

All in all it’s a great toaster that when set correctly to the type of object you are toasting and looks really good in the the different colours they have available.

Disappointing toaster – I'm disappointed enough by this toaster to go out of my way to write this review. Toaster lasted just over two years. The button to send the toast down stopped working on one side after a year. Then, when the product was two years old, the heating element stopped working on the other side. Smart Toaster – A friend has had a 2 slice version of this toaster for about 2 years & said how happy she was with it. Each time we visited her, we were impressed by the smooth operation of the motorised lift/lower mechanism & the premium look, feel & even/consistency of browning of the toaster. When our old Sunbeam toaster started to play up recently, we… Read more

needed no more excuses to buy the 4 slice version of the Breville Smart Toaster. We have only had the toaster for a few weeks, so cannot comment on long term reliability. I can say that the build quality appears to be good, especially the cast metal body & quality feel of the buttons & sliders. Toasting is a bit slower than our old toaster, but we haven't had a single burnt slice, I guess due to better control of the heating elements? We use thick cut toast & the very large, wide slots & slice centering guides make for very consistent, even browning. Frozen bread doesn't require any changes in browning settings, just a press of the 'Frozen' button, works perfectly! Haven't had to use the 'Lift & Look' feature much, as the browning is so consistent. So far we haven't had any sticking or jamming, though we are careful to remove any crumbs from the crumb trays & we shake any other crumbs out of the toaster by shaking it upside down, after every few days of use.

Only time will tell if the toaster continues to perform to expectations, but so far so good. Pleased with the purchase.

Quality toaster, but is it worth the price? – Good quality toaster but not convinced that it's worth spending so much to get all the bells and whistles. A simpler and cheaper toaster will toast just the same as long as you are prepared to learn the settings, which you have to do with this one anyway. I have used this many times over the three weeks I have had it and tested it with bread,… Read more

bagels, crumpets/raisin loaf and English muffins. For me, the most valuable option has been the crumpet/fruit bread button which toasts less on one side than the other. Works well with bagels and English muffins but I would like more toasting on the base of my crumpets (needs a variable setting). Yes it gently lowers and raises your toast, but really, is this something that has been missing in your life? And the beep to tell you your toast is ready is so quiet that I never hear it. When my old toaster popped up I could hear it from across the kitchen and knew it was finished without keeping an eye on it. Is this a good quality product - YES. Does it work well - YES. Is it worth the money - YES, if you want a toaster with all the bells and whistles. Would I recommend it to my friends, yes, but I would give them the benefit of my experience. Would I buy another one - probably not, but I had to try it and don't regret my purchase. And the two year warranty is a good security blanket on such a small kitchen appliance that can be prone to trouble.

Even a $10 toaster lasts more than a year – I'm not sure what Breville are doing. These products they're "innovating on" are a failure. Sure, pressing a button to lower, or lift the toast is easier than using a spring loaded handle, but if it can't last a year, then maybe the basics need to be revisited. Plugged it in for the first time on the 29th of July 2016 in a new house, and… Read more

there was a spark in the toaster on the 22nd of August 2017. Just less than 1 month after the warranty period. The spark took out one half of the toasters ability to toast.

I'd consider this a unlucky failure normally however my breville stainless steel frying pan now ignores it's temperature setting, and my breville coffee grinder has started making strange loud noises..both within a single month of the warranty period expirin. The term "planned obsolescence" shouldn't just be thrown around, but 3 out of 3 is beyond a joke.

Whilst the toaster worked, the cooking was above average with very even toasting, and even allowed the burnt on the outside, soft in the middle setting that no other toaster can get right (2 notches under the highest setting for me).

The button settings are a novelty though and due to more moving parts, is more prone to failure compared with a standard toaster. The toast holding brackets stopped working a couple of times (power off at the wall sorted it).

It doesn't matter what Breville do in the future, they have proven themselves a poor quality manufacturers and will never be seen in my home again. Not only that, if the opportunity arises, I will vigorously recommend against any Breville product.

Revolutionary toasting experience with the Breville smart toaster – Just purchased it on 29/6/2024. I make my own different types of bread - the cut isn’t always even and the slices are quite big. The different settings work brilliantly. I like raisin bread and hubby likes the light rye I make - What a joy it is to toast different breads with their own requirements, simultaneously. brown is perfect, even though the toaster caters for deeper toast colours if required. Yes it’s a little expensive but as my dear husband pointed out, this unit is approximately the price of a good takeaway two course meal for the three of us. Money well spent.

Breville 4 slice toaster BTA845BSS – Bought this 12 years ago and still toasting strong! Its pricey but worth the money for a good looking, quality, modern toaster. Toasts from warm to burnt black, the automatic drop down and buttons are solid. Kids love the red lights and beep when its finished... awesome will buy another!

Brand New Breville Toaster Defective – The issue was discovered when a family member attempted to use the toaster and noticed that the bread failed to descend into the appliance. Subsequently, after switching the toaster off and then plugging it in again, a power outage. We made a further attempt to use the toaster which resulted in the appliance emitting smoke, prompting its immediate shutdown. The internal wiring had sustained burn damage despite the absence of any crumbs. Show details

Great toaster until it fails 3 times – We were very happy with this toaster when we bought it. Loved the ability to toast all different types of bread products and they toasted as they should do. the same fault less than a year later. Breville again replaced it for us. At this stage we were starting to feel a little cautious about this toaster after having 2 faulty ones. Breville are now only offering a half price replacement but I will not be spending money on this particular model toaster after having 3 faulty ones!

Not worth the price – Slow to toast. Was content until the left side "Toast" button got stuck & damaged the functionality of the left 2 toasters. Occurred out of warranty. They dont offer parts either. As a consequence, have been using it as a 2 slice toaster for several years. Been through several Breville kettles as well. Will never buy another Breville appliance. Slowest toaster, not worth the money – Have had this toaster for over 6 months now and still frustrated enough to come back and review. Most expensive toaster I have ever bought. toasting is uneven on different sides of the bread. All unacceptable really given the price. I shouldn’t have to microwave a fresh piece of toast to keep it warm enough to eat - but all it has is enough heat to melt the butter (sometimes! Not if you are 5 seconds too slow getting it out!) and then needs a zap before eating. I have a few of the breville appliances - the straightforward marketing appeals to me - but probably will steer clear from now on.

Best toaster we have had in 40 years, versatile and easy to use – We bought this toast in December 2018 as I wanted a toaster that could do tings like crumpets and fruit toast properly. We weren't disappointed. The toaster is easy to use, and as really useful settings for things like frozen bread, crumpets and fruit toast. We use it every day. Each half of the 4 slide toaster can be set separately so we can do things like have crumpets on one half and fruit bread in the other and get perfect results. Show details

Not such a SMART toaster at all – I bought this about 8 months ago. just like the cheap ones do. It cooks crumpets only on one side and burns raisin toast to a crisp even on the fruitbread feature it has. On thicker slices in particular crumpets that are frozen and when selecting the frozen feature it tends to brown the outside and the inside would be stone cold. Crumpets also quite often get jammed in this thing and it has to be switched off at the wall to be able to free them. Pretty disappointing considering the quite large price tag on it. I have bought 7 dollar toasters from KMart that can brown toast in some cases better than this toaster does

and probably after toasting a tonne of bread!

There was no hesitation with regard to the toaster we would buy. We like the features such as fruit toast, not sure what it does, but it is different than the regular mode. Seems to give raisin toast a nice even blowing, instead of the usual uneven toasting. The same can be said for the crumpet mode.

We have a lot of Breville appliances and have been happy with their quality and longevity. This toaster is no exception.
