No longer safe! – This heater model is a safety hazard. It has inherent flaws in its flue system which Canon is not prepared to acknowledge and fix. The heater is no longer able to operate in a modern house and pass current safety standards ( excessive leaking of carbon monoxide). It is disappointing that Canon is still able to actually sell this product without… Read more
any accountability. It is disappointing Australian heating retailers are now marketing overseas products as safer options to this Australian made dinosaur.
Useless without the remote control – the heater itself works great , damage , break or loose the remote control and you have an ornament , and at $380.00 plus for a replacement , I really regret having purchased this now less than useless piece of scrap ! Had I been told of this downfall , I never would have wasted my hard earned cash on this unattractive useless wall art ! Show details
DO NOT BUY Flued or unflued these heaters are flawed and UNSAFE – If i could give less than 1 star i would. We purchased a home with a Cannon log-fire heater. We have had nothing but problems with this heater from the moment we moved into the home. We have experienced exactly the same issues described by the earlier review by [name removed]. Initial concerns occurred when we could smell gas, had the heater… Read more
tested and they found it was spewing out toxic carbon monoxide fumes, at which point heater was disconnected for a month by the time Cannon could send one of their technicians out who did a number of tests to the home. The excuse they will always try to fall back on is "your home does not have enough ventilation" or your "chimney is faulty" this is simply a load of crap. Cannon designed UNFLUED gas log fire heaters to be installed into existing Chimneys, firstly I have no idea how they got a product like this signed off by the EPA or who ever regulates this sort of thing in Australia. How is it possible to design a heater as a one size fits all? Every chimney is unique and the power of ones chimney is unknown to Cannon, yet they designed a heater to supposedly work in ANY functioning Chimney. What they didn't anticipate or didn't advertise to the consumer which is if you chimney has a low draw power toxic fumes could get into your house if you close a door or GOD forbid you decided to have a shower and turn on your fan or even worse run your range-hood to cook dinner for the night. Cannon will try and pin point the problem on the installation or the home owners house but in reality they designed a product but had no god damn idea of how it was going to work in the real world. Word of advice for anyone who has one of these dodgy heaters is, demand Cannon retro fit at least a Flue into the chimney which will help but not solve all the issues (as i just experience tonight when my house again filled up with Carbon Monoxide when I decided to have a shower shame on me) and BUY A CARBON MONOXIDE Detector from Bunnings they are $40 and could save your life.

Very happy – I had my Cannon Canterbury heater installed about 15 years ago, have it checked and serviced every two years, and I couldn’t be happier with it. The logs and flames make the living room look as cosy as it feels, and it heats up a considerable portion of my 2br apartment. One of the best purchases I ever made. Show details · 1
Mine is working well and I'm happy with it – Have one of the old models with the side switches. No CO leakage, service tech says because mine is well installed and also my house is old and well ventilated so no negative pressure. It easily heats my living areas and kitchen and I hardly use my ducted heating. So far it has started reliably. Just had it serviced, cleaned the glass, and it's… Read more · 1

Unsafe for modern homes – I regularly service the Cannon Canterbury. Recently, we received a safety notice and arranged for a Cannon technician to come and conduct a safety inspection. He advised that it needed to be disconnected on the spot due to unsafe levels of carbon monoxide being produced from the heater. The Cannon technician reported my heater to the Victorian… Read more
Building Authority (VBA) because I asked him not to disconnect it. As mentioned by many people on this review (and who know how many others who are also suffering the same fate), the only other options are: 1. To install ventilation throughout the house (at my own expense, which will also defeat the purpose of have a well-insulated house) or; 2. Install a new heater (around $5,000). The VBA assessed the heating unit and agreed that unsafe levels of carbon monoxide were being produced. The VBA also recommended that to install vents or replace the unit entirely to mitigate this issue. At this time, I asked the VBA to contact Energy Safe Victoria (ESV – who are the regulators) to follow this up. It is unacceptable that the home owner is expected to bear the cost of fixing a defective product. Today (01/03/2019) VBA called me to see if I have installed vents or replaced the gas heater – my response is no to both. The concern I had raised with the VBA regarding with ESV and Cannon about the known safety breach was not followed up. The VBA, Cannon and the ESV have all refused to take responsibility. There is absolutely no concern about the outcome for home owners, which in most instances, is financially devastating – not to mention emotionally unacceptable. In summary, the Cannon Canterbury is not suitable for a modern home, which is designed to be well insulated and energy efficient. It is outrageous that this faulty product is still being sold on the market. This is an incredibly flawed product that has caused unwarranted financial and emotional distress on many families.
A very problematic "free of charge service visit" – We received a letter dated on 17 July 2018 from Cannon, suggesting a "free of charge service visit" because of "the possibility for the glass on your heater to slip downwards from the its fixed position" of Cannon Canterbury. The service was organised and a tradesman turned up, but the whole thing is ended with the power of our heater… Read more
disconnected and a big bill is sent in to repair the thing the original letter did not mention.
This is a very problematic arrangement, which appears to be that the letter did not really tell what Cannon really wants to do - fix the glass or "hazardous levels of carbon monoxide", or that its contracting company wants to make use of this opportunity. In either case, Cannon should act responsibly.

Cannon does not stand by it's product – We arranged for our Cannon Canterbury gas log fire to have a safety inspection following the safety notice that was issued. The options now are to install ventilation throughout the house (not an acceptable option) or install a brand new heater ($5k). I… Read more
spoke to Cannon about the issue and they are refusing to provide any type of compensation, blaming Energy Australia and our house for being well insulated.
This is absolutely appalling for a company to not stand by it's faulty products. We were not told anything about possible carbon monoxide issues at the time of purchase and the heater was professionally installed and serviced regularly. If a car is found to have a fault, the car manufacturer issue a recall at their own expense. Why should Cannon put this cost on it's customers?

Great if it goes – This heater is a great concept with the power flue allowing it to be flued through a wall, floor etc, but it is totally unreliable we have had it for 1.5 winters and have had the serviceman out 3 times last year and calling him again tomorrow. if we were lucky. The independent service tech was great and changed everything possible but it took nearly a year (waiting on parts approvals etc) to diagnose the manufacturing problem of a failed gasket...... I eventually had it taken away until its was functional. The "service manager" from sampford was one of the most arrogant people I have ever had to deal with. I was told I could purchase a new one direct from them for a discount as they've were unable to or find a fault! Who in their right mind would purchase another heater to replace a broken one??????? It is currently working after being fully rebuilt so hopefully continues to work. I was also lucky that it passed the carbon monoxide test unlike other unlucky people on this site.

Breathing New Life into old unit – Having had the "Canterbury" inbuilt for 15 years you could be beguiled into believing that having it services regularly would be best. However over the years it has died to a slight glow even at its highest level. The recent Sanford IXL check suggested there were no problems but it may need a new control panel which they do not make anymore. $3500… Read more
for a replacement unit meant there was nothing lost for me to pull it apart so the new one could be fitted in. I confirmed that the control box was no longer on production but it appeared to work fine. I was concerned that the gas solenoids on the regulator may be the problem but there did not appear to any problem there. I kept on stropping out the unit and when i removed the burner I found flakes of carbon build up in the box prior to the air mixing chamber. There was slight carbon buildup on the two jets. I cleared out a lot of carbon debris from the pre-mixing chamber and after 4 hours work without any instruction manual and basic gas plumbing knowledge we have breathed new life into the unit. My wife believes it is better than it was originally. It is now superb! The service agents have all been recommended by Cannon including the recent one 3 months ago but clearly there is a level of knowledge and skills that are lacking in these service agents. If a new control box was available we would have been led down the wrong path. The cause of the build up may be the quality of the Natural Gas it is hard to see how the carbon buildup would be so far back from the actual burner. Hope this helps but is should be something that authorised service technicians are aware of.
August 26th 2017 Update: Cannon Unapologetic and do not acknowledge the serious fault
Cannon now know about a problem and by not acknowledging it to us, they are leaving their customers floundering. Our local sales agent say they just throw out the old Canon Canterbury units. We are still enjoying ours no thanks whatever to Canon.
My review 'Breathing new Life into old unit" on this site, dated Sept 2016 was responded to by Canon who said "It is great to read that your heater is operating well. It is strongly recommended that all gas related products should always be attended to by an authorized person and serviced at least once every two years."
The point I make is that year after year many technicians, recommended by Canon, demonstrated they had no idea how to maintain the unit. Several technicians advised to buy a new one. We ordered a new unit and we were awaiting delivery at a cost of $3500. Cannon should be thankful for the advice accept this particular fault exists, and promote information about it to its customers who can ensure technicians are competent. Not an acceptable behaviour of Canon.
August 1st 2018 Update: Another Recall
We have had another notice of Recall regarding the glass slipping and needing a new bracket. There are two pieces of glass in the unit and it is difficult to comprehend how the glass can slip to allow Carbon monoxide into the room space. The brackets that hold the glass are solid rails top, bottom and sides. It would be useful to know what the retrofit brackets look like to check if we need Cannon need to come out. Once fitting the brackets they want to do a CO test and I hear from reliable new log heater sales people that this test results in the majority of uses having their unit disconnected and the gas line capped off.
Having had Cannon service our unit and failed to fix problems I would prefer to use another service agent.
The letter advising of the "need" for the new brackets does not give sufficient detail including what the brackets look like, have they been replaced at a previous visit by Cannon and the option to use an independent service agent. It is particular concern that the letter has a veiled "THREAT" that Cannon will advise Energy Safe Vic if we do not comply. There are other service agents I choose to trust.
September 24th 2018 Update: Left in the cold
Modern homes are by their very design are purposely sealed to ensure energy efficiency. Cannons to this is that their gas fires do not function in a modern home and after selling these gas log fires they come and inspect as they do not comply with a modern home. It therefore is a product that is fundamentally flawed and unfit for installation in a modern home.
The basic solution is to be able to crack open a window or door to allow free flow of air into the house. With this knowledge like every other appliance that is unsafe if used incorrectly if not used correctly can cause life threatening problems. That is not a reason for the manufacturer to find a way of entering your home and shutting down your device. The Statutory Authorities have been hoodwinked by Cannon that they are dealing with the issue of their faulty appliance. They are allowing Cannon to send out their contractors to enter under false pretences knowing that their units are at fault then requiring the contractor to disconnect them heater with no further resolution being offered other than to purchase a new heater. These contractors have no concern for the outcome which can be financially devastating and show no compassion or effort to actually fix the gas log fire faults.
The fact that concerns them is that you may die as a result of their heater and they will be culpable supplying a device that is known to be faulty but accept no responsibility for restitution of their faulty equipment.
Rest assured their motivation is for their survival and not yours. If they were concerned about their customers that would offer financial compensation and or a fix for their faulty devices that were unsuitable for homes for which they were supplied. Meanwhile ensuring adequate ventilation during use caution with used of extraction fans without air draw into the house and what ever you do get you own accredited Class B plumber to service the unit but particularly do not use the Cannon contractors who are working for Cannon and have a substantial conflict of interest in the outcome of any modifications or response to testing. They certainly will not offer to fix or repair anything without you forking out and that will charge you for anything over and above the check they do for Cannon.
Good luck but do not trust Cannon as they have caused harm without concern for its customers. The few who have commended here and on their experience various other gas log heaters manufactured under the Cannon name owned by IXl Home Pty Ltd.

weeks ago. After a renovation, the new theatre room that this heater was now going to be used for was ready to go. Worked fine for the first 2 weeks, then bingo, no more spark. Being a technician, and not getting involved on the gas side, I removed the ignition module after some info. searching. Found a new one, or so I thought at Northern gas. Found that it was no longer available, but they were fantastic and tried in vain to find me a replacement,no luck and they couldn't help me, but as I said, were fantastic to deal with. Searched ebay, found one for $500. got to be kidding.
Rang Sandford, told it was discontinued, ok, asked what my options were, and was told to purchase a new heater! What pathetic customer service. I mean rude, no knowledge type service. When I asked to speak to a technician, oddly enough they were all out! We are talking $5000 here, bloody greedy in my opinion, and if I had to buy a new heater, Sandford would have known of my research for a replacement when their phone failed to ring. Now to advise you all on how I solved this issue, Sandford IXL, take note. As I said, I removed the ignition module. Now bear in mind, I have a disconnect/ reconnect electrical licence, so you may need some help here. Once out, I took it to a little shop in Ringwood called MODULE REPAIR SERVICE. PH. 98793400. These guys are the best. Fixed in 3 days, back in and going perfectly, cost me $168 and the guys explained the problem (ignition circuit), replaced the capacitor mentioned on other posts and replaced all of the relays.
This will solve the electrical side of your problem ,assuming that is the issue, best to get it checked anyway, they charge $25 to check the board for you. If that does not solve your issue, then you need to get a gas tech in to check that side of things, I would advise you all not to play in that area, but at least you know the module is ok. There is another option for the ignition module also, a company called TECHRITE in Springvale will help you out with a retro fit for the said module. They are the agents/ distributors for DUNGS ignition modules in Australia and have the upgrade, about $400 and you will need an electrician to change a bit of the wiring, pricey, but will get you out of trouble. So, there are options, although Sandford will not tell you that. I hope this helps anybody out there that thinks that this is the end of their heater, don't panic, you can get it fixed, just remember to use the appropriate trades people so you don't kill yourself or anybody else, and to you Sandford, help your customers and stop being lazy.

Lighting troubles – Installed our second hand heater and it worked a treat for a little while but then it wouldn't light most of the time. An authorised technician quoted $198 for he first 30 minutes and then $33 per 15 minutes. I told them they're dreaming. was leaking very significantly (860ppm) to the extent that main doors had to be opened to clear it. I asked why the CO test could not have been carried out before the service but was told ' it is the law'. I can sympathise with anyone who has had their heater turned off under any circumstances, but obviously the gasfitter knew of this problem and kept it completely hidden from me. During the service he received three phone calls from people requesting tests (obviously brought on by the attention to the problem on the radio or in the press) each time he told the enquirer that he had to do a full service first. When I asked him what my options were he told me that it was unfixable and to to buy a powerflue model at around $4500. I am very grateful for all the attention this matter is getting as all affected finish up facing a brick wall.

parts required for the installation. I designed an air-tight matte black rear surround with a shiny stainless steel top, had it fabricated by a sheet metal shop and purchased a single skin stainless steel flue with a perforated metal guard. The installation looks good and it works a treat, heating the rooms on both sides of the wall nicely. It makes the living area of our house (~70m2) very comfortable and the log fire effect looks great. There are none of the cold drafts we experienced with the reverse cycle split system we previously used for heating. The custom made rear surround (on the opposite side of the wall to the heater) does not present a safety hazard. It becomes warm but not too hot to touch. The remote thermostat works well, except for one unfortunate characteristic. When the room gets to the set temperature the heater clicks off and on frequently, which is a bit annoying. We would like more dwell time between switching off and restarting. There is also an intermittent slight "popping" noise when running at the lowest flame. This may be reminiscent of a log fire but it is disconcerting. It sounds like one burner hole intermittently extinguishing and reigniting but I have been unable to spot it. Other than these minor gripes we are pleased with our Cannon Canterbury and will put another one in the new house we are building. It makes the room very comfortable and we have not seen another gas log fire that looks as realistic. Very comfortable controlled temperature heating, with no cold drafts. Attractive installation and realistic log fire look. No double sided installation kit. Frequent stop/start at set temperature. "Popping" sound on low flame.

Cannon Caterbury DUNGS Controller Problem Follow Up Info – Further to my post on the 14th of October I have managed to find the fault in the DUNGS DGAI.73 MOD 5.1.0 TCV used in my Cannon Canterbury heater. This fault may well be a common one judging by other peoples experiences in this forum. The fault manifests itself in several ways, 1. The heater will not stay alight at start up, the ignition circuit… Read more
works the gas is ignited but then it turns off.
2. The gas startups up on the first solenoid valve and instead of the first solenoid valve staying on whilst the second solenoid valve turns on there is a momentary drop in the flame due to the first solenoid valve momentarily turning off.
The fault in my unit turned out to be the 240VAC mains ballast capacitor used to drop the voltage down for the low voltage circuit that entails the start up timer and the ionisation (flame detection) circuitry. This capacitor must be of a particular construction (metallised film polypropylene) due to the application and in my case the capacitance value had decreased from 0.68uF to 0.23uF which was enough to cause the voltage to drop when the ionisation relay tried to pull-in thus causing the timer to reset and turn off the first solenoid. The ionisation detector circuit would then shut the heater down until the power is switched off and then on again.
I'm a qualified Electronic Engineer so this sort of repair is not for the home handy man as the circuit is running on 240VAC, there is no isolated low voltage circuitry, whilst there is low voltage circuitry it is not isoalted from the 240AC mains. Also you need to be able to obtain a suitable capacitor not just any old capacitor of the same value, it's a safety issue and the wrong type could burn out.
I have brought this matter to the attention of Samford IXl and the agents for DUNGS (Techrite), apparently DUNGS are about to discontinue this model.
The replacement cost of a DUNGS controller is now $A280 not including installation and call-out charges and it may be the case that the new unit will also inevitably fail but it is a time dependent problem and for some people who use their heaters infrequently and only during the winter months then it may last for more than 15 years, mine (a second unit) finally failed completely after 8 years but now that I have fixed it I realise that it was probably not working properly for the past 3 years because I first experienced the momentary drop out at start up.
As for the fan, (there is only one) yes it does make a lot of noise at full speed due to the vibration that is set up. The fan motor shaft is too long with two heavy tangential fan drums hanging off the long shaft at each end, if there were end bearings for the motor shaft then I suspect it would not vibrate as much.
PS: You really need to clean out the underneath fan area with a vacuum cleaner (this means lying on your stomach) and the fans themselves once a year (or have some one do it for you), that means taking out the fan assembly and sometimes removing the blower drums and soaking them in warm water with some detergent to remove sticky dirt and fluff build up.
I hopes this helps others in some way. Natural Looking Log Fire , Stylish design
Thank you very much. An exasperating intermittent fault in my heater exactly as described above --… Read more (+15 replies)
Terrible – I wondered what had happened to the concept of service; then I saw an ad in a country paper for a stud bull and I felt a wave of clarity sweep over me. Overall, a poorly made piece of garbage that is not supported by the manufacturer who is obviously only interested in sales. My advice, shop elsewhere. Its asthetically pleasing as a wall… Read more
decoration - even more so when it decides to function.
The only reason I've given it a one star rating is that it is the lowest rating required to progress. I continue to have issues with my inbuilt Canterbury gas log fire.
After waiting for 4 months for a correct flame rod cable to be delivered, the failure to ignite issue continued and escalated to an explosive ignition that spewed soot over our carpet.
Yet another service call revealed a split flare nut at the gas valve which was replaced. 2 days later, the heater again failed to ignite.
We were then told we needed another ignition module kit (the second since installation in 2006).
Service calls (bay a local authorised dealer/service Co), electricity bills (reverse cycle air con throughout winter), carpet cleaning and parts are now more than half the purchase price of the heater.
The unit was finally fixed 10 months after the original failure to ignite fault was reported. Now the fan sounds like its about to self destruct.
Sampford IXL takes no responsibility for the delays and faults with the heater nor the consequences of those delays and faults. Not one of my emails has even been acknowledged let alone acted on by Sampford IXL.
Department of Justice Victoria etc -- here we come.
So far so good – The fan on our unit is a little noisy when on high. It heats a very large room with high ceiling very well on low. Included in this area is a kitchen, stairwell and laundry laundry. I love the look of the flame but as we have it on low mostly, the flame appearance could be larger. The appearance of a log fire fan noisy when on high
Continual problems! – We purchase the heater in July last year - 2 weeks later, noticed fine fracture across glass - this was replaced - then the heater was taking around 2 minutes to light, service call again, ignition replaced - now, twelve months later, turn it on today and wont go at all - very dissapointed as have always wanted to replaced our old gas heater with… Read more
