Coromal Compac

A versatile and very convenient camper for two – We purchased our Compac E402 in 2007 and even after using it for many long holidays and short weekend trips are still satisfied with our choice of van. We have found it to be strongly made (nothing has vibrated or come loose) towing it either at speed or on rough dirt roads. We recently traded our 4WD for a more comfortable 2WD Benz and still have retained and use the easy to tow and convenient Coromal E402. The overall layout works well but we found no annex for the rear entry was inconvenient in the wet. This was solved recently by purchasing a suitable rear annex from a supplier in England. This extended the enclosed area at the rear by 2.5 X 2.5m. which makes for a great add-on when staying on site longer.
By adding a battery and solar unit along with toilet/shower tent we have extended free camping capabilities. A perfect van for touring and short stopovers that does not restrict your driving comfort and have you wishing for more towing horsepower. My only complaint is having to be judicious when loading to avoid exceeding the rather low tow ball rating on the car.
I love my Coromal Compac – This van has everything 2 people need for either a weekend away or for a 3 months trip.(we've done both) and still love it. My husband loves the fact it is very light & easy to tow, park, reverse etc.,& easy on fuel consumption. I like that there is plenty of cupboard space including good sized wardrobe, underbed storage with wire basket slide out drawer.Under the wardrobe there is a cupboard to store our porta-loo. The Compac has all the components of a larger van(fridge,3+1 burner stove/griller,microwave etc) It does have a smaller dinette area than larger vans but is still adequate for 2 people to sit comfortably. The van has a rear door which means plenty of uninterupted outdoor space on the side of the van for 2 chairs plus small table (as well as space for our pop up ensuite tent)under the side roll out awning. It has a full size front boot for the usual gas bottles, spare tyre, hoses etc. The walls of the van are insulated and with using a small heater in winter and a fan (& opening the pop top windows to let hot air out) in summer, we have had no trouble using the van all year round. Our van has 2 single beds with a centre walkway which gives the appearance of a much more spacious van. We have now owned the van for 12 months and have travelled over 25,000 k's and have had no trouble with it and have no trouble recommending it.
Yes. I concur with what Holidayrose has posted. We have the same van and have been from Brisbane to Cooktown, across to Karumba returning inland to Brisbane without incident. Last year we took the van around Austrlalia for 4 months including Tasmania, across the Nullabor to Perth, Up the west coast and into Darwin returning to Brisbane via Kakadu, 3ways, Mt Isa etc. I tow the van with a Toyota Camry V6 which handles it very well although fuel economy is dropped by about a third. We try and stay to bitumen roads where possible but have been through some unmade national park roads with no adverse affects. Compact and comfortable and suitable for two adventurers.
Update: nearly 4 years on & we are still happy with our Coromal Compac 402. Since puchasing the van second hand in 2010 ,we have added a solar panel + batteries/BMS, a portable gas hot water system, pop up shower tent & a porta pottie & this allows us to do quite a lot of free(dom) camping & take the van "off the black" on many occasions. Coromal's independant suspension has been a blessing. We also added a rear awning over the (rear) door. The van is now 10 years old & accept for normal wear & tear, we have had no problems with it at all. We did replace the ageing vinyl stoneguard on the front of the van with checkerplate to give the van a more modern appearance.
