D-Link DI-524

This is the review from 2020 – Was using this router from 2017 to 2020 (it was given to me, didn't buy it), this grandpa was pretty good, my flat ist 35 sq meters, with open door I caught wifi even in bathroom, 5/5 recommend :P Show details
Bad – I do not recommend this router. Though it is cheap the service is provides is poor and buggy. Quite often the router will not allow the computer to connect to internet and requires a restart of the computer and the router(ie flicking the power point off then on). Extremely cheap compared to other modems. Has wireless capabilities while allowing… Read more
for up to 4 wired connections(LAN). Crappy signal, especially if there are a few walls to pass through. Bathroom and Landry pipes will affect signal severely. The router will crash if left on for a period of time, 8-12 hours.
Terrible product – I've had a D-Link Dl-524 for the last few years and had nothing but problems with it. It seems that whenever it is/was under a bit of load (by "load" I mean when a net page was loading), it would break and I had to switch my modem and router off & back on. It happened to me over one hundred times. I also spent many hours on the phone with my… Read more
internet provider several times while trying to figure out why I couldn't connect to the net, only to find the Dl-524 was to blame.
And now to top it off, it died on me today. Woke up this morning with my net not working, went to reset it (again), and found all the lights switched off on the router. Tried different power points, held the reset button, even sprayed a touch of CRC where the power cable goes - Nothing. No power.
Then I called D-Link where I waited for god knows how long, only to be told by somebody that he can't hear me and that there must be something wrong with my phone - all while hearing a lot of noise (people chatting) on his end! No one has ever had problems hearing me + I tried the other phone, then the [censored word removed] hung up on me after telling me he still can't hear me properly!
This is [censored word removed]. I'm sick of these computer parts constantly breaking down! I'm 100% sure they are deliberately built to break down after a year or 2 so you keep buying new products. I see no reason why these computer parts can't last for 100+ years. They are not subjected to harsh conditions- weather, heat, vibrations, water, friction.... Nothing! So why are they breaking down for?! Just do a quick google search and see how many people have experienced these problems with D-Link. It's ridiculous! They should be sued!
I'm never buying another D-Link product again, and I don't think anyone else should too.
Excellent – I've personally found the DI-524 to be rock-solid. In fact, mine stays on for months at a time without a re-boot, and even transmits wirelessly to the floor above. I'm running four different wireless devices thorugh it (laptop, XBox 360, Wii, and iPod Touch), and three other (wired) PC's. Maybe I'm just lucky, but for me the DI-524 has been… Read more
extremely good value Reliable, with reasonable interface for configuration Had some difficulty establishing comms with an iPod Touch - couldn't use WPA, and had to revert to WEP. Unsure as to whether that was the Touch or the DI-524, but I suspect the latter.
D-Link DI-524 is garbage – There's no use beating about the bush: The DI-524 is a piece of garbage. The DI-524 looks like a nice cheap router for home/small office but it is not worth $1. After about 15 clicks in the easy-to-use web config the DI-524 crashed. (only the web configuration part, traffic was going through the router). So i had to restart it (unplugging it)(walk… Read more
to the other end of the house). i resumed configuring the router when it crashed again. Restart. In a period of less than a week this router has crashed at least 20 times. The only good thing about it is the design of the web page that you use to configure it (when it works). Wireless signal strength is average. Good size, nice and small. The features to send the routers logs by SMTP or to a logging server does not work. Also was told by salesman was not opened and that it was brand new however when i got it home was surprised to see that one of the bags had already been ripped open and contained a poorly bounded CAT5 network cable. I am going to return this ASAP (still in change of mind period) *Easy to use web interface *Always crashing
*Average wireless signal strength
Excellent – I had a few problems connecting vista to a wireless network but I updated the firmware and it works fine. I must qualify that hardly ever use its wireless feature (its faster my internet connection so I am happy) but I would not expect it be fast if you want speed or range get a router that supports better wireless networking. I like being… Read more
able to turn off wireless networking I feel more secure. Does what I need I hardly know its there.
Can disable wireless network after firmware update I will eventually have to replace it with one with better range when I move.
Terrible – Horrible router, I drop out like every hour even though I'm like 10 meters away from mine, have tried everything to fix this router up but still doesn't meet my expectations, any potential buyers please stay away from this router. I bought another Router, a Belkin one which works much better, no drop outs, better coverage and a much stronger signal strength. Cheap Horrible range, crap speeds, drop outs
