Very simple but excellent machine – This machine I have purchased from Mayer in about 1996. Only once I had to replace the boiler. The coffee it make has plentiful crema and no machine to this day matches it. I hope one day DELONGHI would make it again. Show details

A nice looking machine with some caveats – Having disassembled and added a PID unit, I got to know the internals: quite a large (400ml?) aluminum boiler, with cold water pumped into a jacket surrounding the main boiler and an external heating element outside the jacket, which means the temp drops slower when extracting, around 8 degrees F with a 20 second shot, but also means the system is… Read more

slow to respond to increases in temperature. With a replaced brass portafilter (instead of the aluminum one provided) and PID, espresso was quite good.

Downsides: I personally don't like aluminum for boiling, especially if the water sits for a while in the boiler. The stock thermostat overshoots the optimal temp of around 208F by around 15F before it turns off (because of the external heating element), making the water too hot to extract, burning the shot. If the temp light cycles off, pump water for 3 or so seconds to get the temp down to around 210, then extract and it'll be fine. The included thermometer is inaccurate--reading a full 15F over the actual temp, and is slow to respond to changes in temperature.

I imagine most problems with this machine relate to the external heating coil, which can burn out if you allow it to cycle on with a half empty boiler. This problem exists with the Ascaso dream as well, which also has an external heating element, so beware. When steaming, bring the temp up until the light turns off, bleed off the water, then steam right away. Once done steaming, turn off the steam right away or risk burning out the element.

them. The 58mm basket and portafilter are professional size and the Metropolis even comes with its own tamper to help you achieve perfect extractions. The DeLonghi Metropolis has high quality electronics and includes an ample length cord that tucks nicely in the the back of the machine. Cleaning the Group Head is a breeze and the rubber gasket is high quality and very substantial meaning it will never wear out to the point you cannot get a good seal every time you rotate the portafilter into position. The steam wand automatically froths milk perfectly creating expert foam with ease and has plenty of mobility to swivel and move to get a steam mug in place. By all means, if you have a chance to by this perfect piece of retro art meets incredible functionality, buy the DeLonghi Metropolis DCM1385 and your investment will only increase in value the same way as vintage cars do. Bravo DeLonghi, BRAVO!!

Coming up to 5 years and still going strong! – So far the only problem is having to replace the handle which has cracked. Makes good crema, quick heating, easy to clean. Looks cool to boot. Like many machines, once you get used to it you know how to get the best out of it. Best suited for a 1 or 2 at a time household.

Rubbish machine – I have had two of these machines and they last approx. 2 years if used every day. They look great but at $600 a pop I would expect them to last a bit longer. Wont waste my time or $ on anything made by delonghi again total rubbish. Stay away from this model.

OK – We drink alot of coffee in our family so its quality can change our mood! If you are willing to invest $500 every two years this machine is ok. Because for two years it works like a dream. If you only make coffee on a morning or when guests are over, it might last you longer. Im on this site looking for a good review for a replacement... so thats… Read more

gotta tell you something. I am not buying the sae machine again! Sunday Great looking, does make a good coffee, and froth is creamy when you learn how. The machine rusts on the bottom after about a year, because the tray sits on the bench and the water falls into the tray. The pressure fails after about two years and the coffee gets weak. Even with a good descaling it still happens. I have to wholeheartily agree with the review above. It takes a long time for the frother to be ready, so if you have 6 friends over for a dinner party and they all raise their hands for a late or cap after dinner... be prepared to be working on coffees for 20 mins.

Good – Great looking machine that does provide a good tasting cappuccino. I am happy with this model, and is perfect for when a friend pops in for coffee. But, if you are making a few consecutive cappuccino's at a time, I would look for another machine that is more capable of this. This machine is very sleek and retro in styling. The nozzle does provide… Read more

a very good froth, with good heating of the milk. Good crema is achieved, with the option of adding an insert into coffee filter. This disk makes a finer crema. I prefer to use the filter only, for best results. I like the smaller water tank, as this ensures you refill each time, using fresh water after making 2-3 cups. I find this machine very easy to clean. My only real problem is it's not great on making consecutive cappuccino's after the initial two. You do have to wait 5 or so minutes for the machine to cool down a little, before you can release the filter holder to start again. If you don't do this, the coffee seems to have a little burnt taste to it.

Not a good buy – I had one of these machines for over a year and found it slow to heat up and the pressure for frothing was woeful. I was only making one coffee a day so it should have worked like a dream but that wasn't the case. The coffe was always bitter no matter what I did - a big waste of money Looks good Poor performer all round

Terrible – This machine was a really bad choice, you couldnt even put your cups on the top as they just fell off. Looks good but overall bad design. looks quite retro and sleek sitting on the bench made the worst coffee imagineable, scalded the coffee badly so was very disappointed with this purchase and returned it within a week
