Great machine but developed a leak after 18 months
I purchased my BES870 about 4 years ago from Harvey Norman for $649. I am very satisfied with it on the whole. It has been producing about 4, great, double shot coffees a day, on average.
It’s really easy to set up using the operating manual and there are plenty of ‘how to’ videos on YouTube for guidance on using this machine. I really only need to adjust the grinder fineness and duration settings when I change bean brands.
I would give it 5 stars but the grinder makes a small bit of mess and after about 12-18 months it developed a small water ...

This is my second machine, first one actually had an electrical fault which Breville replaced without an issue.
We have been using this machine for the past 4 years without an issue, the espresso comes out decent and the machine overall is very easy to use. Downsides of this machine are definitely the grinder and the steaming pressure but it's a very good buy considering this machine can be gotten under $500 on special.

Took a bit of research on You tube to get it right but practice practice practice and we make coffees as good if not better than a coffee shop. Love it. Would definately reccommend. Love the grinder in the machine, cleaning is easy enough. Its a bit slow if you have to make multiple coffees but all in all very very happy. Very expensive though if you dont drink alot of coffee, I had vouchers to spend at Myers and they were on special, bought the red as it was alot cheaper. Not sure I would have bought it if i didnt have the vouchers.

After using this model each day for a few coffees year it died after a year. Purchased 2 of these brand ones, took it home and they were both absolute DUDS! The extraction pump and gauge did not work and this major manufacturing defect was mentioned when i called the company who offer zero service and support and hung up. For anyone looking at this utter piece of rubbish stay away or waste your time and money and buy a machine that does not work. Even the 12 month warranty is trash, DeLonghi have a 2 year and i ended up purchasing those perfect machines and cound not be happier!

It is such a shame as this was a great machine for 18 months until it started tripping our electricity. Don’t bother contacting breville, they just send a quote to buy a new one with no contact whatsoever, or explanation as to why or how it could be fixed. Why would I spend more money on another machine to only last me 18 months.

Perfect budget friendly coffee machine, can’t live without it
All settings are adjustable so you can change the grind size, you can do an automatic or manual pull of grains, super easy to clean and tells you when it needs a clean or descale, easy to refill beans and water, doesn’t take up too much bench space.

My coffee machine has been one of the best purchases we have made. It has paid for itself as I generally prefer my 'home' coffee to purchasing one elsewhere. I'm guaranteed a perfectly smooth and delicious coffee everytime as I have adjusted the settings to what we love in terms of grind consistency and size. There's nothing better than smelling freshly made coffee and it's at our fingertips. It has a milk frother attachment too so the whole coffee experience is on one machine. We take our coffee machine on holidays in our caravan too as it is lightweight and compact. It's easy to clean and it will indicate when it's time to be descaled. Highly recommend it :)

Solidly built machine: grinds coffee, dispenses presettable quantity straight into coffee basket, it offers multiple setting options, as well as milk frother function with large stainless steel jug. Heated top platform for heating cups and mugs! Very happy, we've had it for a couple of years, it never faltered. Very thorough instruction book for cleaning, resetting and dosing. Cleaning utensils are part of the package.
Different size and double walled cups for basket are provided with the machine.

What an amazing machine!! We bought ours over 9 years ago and its still going strong! Its a little pricey but such a fantastic investment.
We were a bit suspicious at first because the grinder is inbuilt... thinking what would happens if there's an issue with the grinder...but after using it for many years, I can guarantee its nothing to worry about.
Love the size of the water tank, which means you don't constantly have to refill it if you use it a lot. Its easy to set up the grind size and the pouring time if you prefer a manual set up inste...
Read moread of automatic one. We also love the option of manually selecting the amount of ground coffee we can get, but there's also a 1 shot/ 2 shots automatic set up. The little pushing tool is great to press you coffee down, and only after many years I've realized its attached to the machine with a magnet!!! Better late then never! My husband likes to detach it when he presses his coffee... I'm used to doing it while still attached...lol! The wound for frothing the milk is a little short in my opinion, so we keep our machine next to the sink but its not a big issue. Love the gauge showing the level of extraction, it helped us making the perfect coffee when we started using it. It has a surprisingly great pressure for such a small machine so it make frothing the milk and getting the right extraction very easy.Purchased for $799.

I've had this machine for over 5 years and it has never broken down or deteriorated. The coffee it produces (although depends on the skill of the person making it) is cafe quality. The consistency of the coffee, however, depends on the quality of the beans. I've found extraction harder with poorer/older beans. Make sure you look after your machine with a regular clean and descale as it can build up quickly, depending on use. I'm very happy with this machine and would but another when this one eventually dies.

Thank you
The on/off knob for the steam wand/hot water has become extremely stiff to turn. I'm assuming it needs to be cleaned. How can we fix this? We have been descaling etc when the machine tells us to.

Points of praise
From the mouths of self-professed coffee snobs, the trusty Breville Barista Express makes consistently great-quality coffees. This saved reviewers plenty of money on cafe bills.
This Breville coffee machine was also reported to be easy to use, as well as to clean and maintain.
According to reviewers, the machine is efficient, and lets you quickly make a great cup of joe, making it great for those who need to squeeze in some caffeine before their morning commute.
Something to consider
Parts can sometimes stop working, which was frustrating for reviewers when the fault occurred just outside of the warranty period (12 months). Finding repairers was reported to be difficult and, once a repairer was sourced, expensive.
For the second year in a row, the Breville Barista Express has won a ProductReview.com.au Award in the Semi-Automatic and Manual Coffee Machines category. The main reasons it won the Award was because of its durable build quality and, according to reviewers, for being great value for money.
