Worked well for 4 months, then stopped working. So I give it 2 stars because 500$ for making coffee for 4 months is a bit expensive. Show details

Great machine but a cosmetic refresh or differentiation would have been nice – Upgraded from the Magnifica S to the "smart" version. The Magnifica S was already a very good machine but the "smart" panarello wand on the Smart version makes frothing pretty much idiot proof. The smart version has a rinse button which I find handy. As for reviews commenting on weak coffee, you can set the volume of water that runs thru on… Read more

the Magnifica S so presumably you could do the same.

Criticisms are that the drip plate no longer lips over the plastic tray meaning the top edge of the tray can get scuffed now and that although the machine looks good, a makeover would have been welcome to distinguish it from the non smart version. An LCD screen or something perhaps? Also would be nice if there were separate error lights for specific errors instead of a certain combination being lit up meaning something.

Overall both versions are a good machines and I'd recommend them. Looks great on the counter top too unlike the Phillips ones which are a bit boring I think.

Delonghi magnifica machine – Hi This is my second machine. Both have provided great coffee and been easy to use. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one and will certainly replace mine with another when required Regards Roger Show details

Very weak coffee, poor milk frothing, fiddly to use – We have one of these in the office but I greatly prefer my Breville Infuser and Macap M2m Grinder at home. Firstly the coffee is extremely weak, even with the grind at the finest setting and the strength dial turned to max, the coffee comes out very watery. I think the grind needs to be able to go much finer. I don't quite get why there is a… Read more

grind setting as well as a strength dial. (As well as a single and double shot espresso option) If you want a weaker coffee, you'd just make a single shot, if you want stronger, make a double. I don't get why an additional strength meter is neccessary, I don't even know what it controls, but doesn't seem to make much difference as the coffee is always too weak.

The milk frother is also very strange, it's nothing like a regular steam wand, the pressure seems very weak and you can not get any kind of vortex going. Moving the frother around or trying different angles makes no difference, either you get basically no air in the milk, or it starts spurting and bubbling if you move it a tiny bit, there's no midpoint that gives a nice introduction of air. I'm left with either very flat milk or an extremely bubbly mess. It also takes a very long time to heat up milk even just for a single coffee. (Over 2 minutes of steaming until the jub starts to get slightly hot to hold) I've tried it with both the hot milk and cappucino settings, I can't honestly tell what the difference is, they both seem very inadequate.

I don't really know who the target audience is with this product, but if you prefer proper steam wand usage and control over the grind, I'd stay away.

The manual says to achieve proper milk quality, try using semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, or trying a different brand, which is stupid. I steam several types of milk at home with my own steam wand (Skim, fullcream, soy, oat, barista and non barista versions) and I'm able to get great microfoam with all of them, it's just a matter of finding the right angle and temperature, and not overheating the milk.

They seem to have put a very average frothing system with this, and blamed it on the milk if it doesn't turn out properly.

In addition, the machine takes a while to turn on and run it's "purge" function every single time. Sometimes I'll switch it on, walk away for a minute, come back, and it's already switched off, and now I have to wait for it to switch on and purge again.

The steam functionality has a similar issue where you press the steam button, and wait a bit for it to switch over, but then if you don't use it within a very short time (It feels like 10 seconds or less) it switches back to non steam. If you don't remember to double check first, you'll just get hot water going into your milk instead of steam.

Long rant, but I wish we had a different machine. I'm definitely going to stay away from "smart" coffee machines in the future.

Weak Coffee – The coffee comes out too weak. I have tried to adjust the settings for grind size and strength of coffee but coffee comes out too watery. Not sure what else can be done to make it stronger

Compact and really easy to use – After having a Delonghi for 14 years we needed an upgraded model. We have had this machine for 3 months now and Im really glad we chose this model. Its compact in size so less bench space and is really quick to heat up. The options are simple and very easy to use. The Magnifica S Smart makes a great coffee every time, Im glad we stuck to Delonghi its a really good brand. Show details ·  1

Not the strongest coffee, but able to use ground coffee a bonus – Following the guide booklet, i spent an hour on the machine making small adjustments to set the machine when I first set it up. The grinder is preset up in the factory to the "correct" grinding size, however looking at the used grind, it's very thick and more suited to a drip coffee not an espresso. The guide book states to tighten the grinder 1… Read more

notch at a time while grinding to avoid making too fine a grind, however I now have the grinder at its finest and I still have ample flow through the machine, it could definitely be finer without being too fine. The water is now set to it's hottest also, and the max amount of grind is added, but it still only just makes a reasonable coffee that's not very strong. I couldn't find any other settings to increase the strength of the coffee, I've played with the yield also.

All in all, the machine makes an acceptable coffee but if you love your coffee strong, the machine won't cut it

One large positive for me was due to the fact we also make alot of decaf in our house for later in the day, the machine does provide an option to add preground coffee at any point, so I can make a normal coffee than straight after make a decaf for the wife without touching the beans in the machine.

Takes a long time to get right – After previously owning a Delonghi I decided to purchase another one but this machine is just ok. Be prepared for the machine to to takes to get right. I also found you need really dark beans to get a half decent coffee. My advise if you buy this machine book a demo as that was the only thing that helped me.  Show details

Great overall machine – Happy with the machine, only disappointments I have is that the Water Tank is too small. Three large cups full is about it, then time to refill the cassette. Also, when turned on, water wasted by the auto function to load machine, which then means frequent removal of overflow water tray and ground coffee reservoir. Other than that, great coffee produced, and turn off function when not used for 3 hours is handy.  Show reply

Excellent Coffee Machine – I've had my DeLonghi Magnifica S Smart for just over 8 months now and I can report it to be such an amazing coffee machine. I found making all types of coffee to be so easy and straightforward with its 4 option push-button espresso, 2x double espresso, and Coffee Long automated process. The quality of the coffee it produces is fantastic giving… Read more ·  2

a great smooth crema.

The coffee machine has the ability to adjust the intensity of the coffee via the coffee bean grinder on the top of the machine, and also dial on the front of the machine based on individual tastes.

I also found the milk frothing process to be fairly good giving you beautiful consistent cafe-style creamy milk froth. Although I did find leaving the milk frothing nozzle to the flat milk setting rather than the cappuccino setting, gives you a creamier milk froth.

The cleaning the machine is fairly simple with most of the components such as the drip tray and coffee bean extraction container to be dishwasher safe.

The only downside I did find was it's frequent request to be descaled. I find the period between descaling to be too short and it seems to come around fairly quickly.

I also found it to waste a lot of water with its constant flushing out before and after each time you turn the coffee machine on, and then when the machine goes into auto shutdown after a period of non-use.

So it does require constant topping up with water.

Overall I do recommend this machine to anyone that wants a small compact machine that makes great cafe-style coffees.
