Awful product DO NOT PURCHASE – Absolutely awful product Literally would have been better off if I’d painted the tiles with house paint. I am a professional painter of 10 years. Followed all directions very carefully. Primer does not hold to tile, peels straight off. Waited 12 hours between each coat and found that each time it was not at all set. Waited longer between… Read more

coats.

Then after finishing the job waited 10 days before any use of the bathroom to find that the paint is not waterproof at all and comes off with a light swipe of a damp rag.

My clients are not happy, I have lost time, money and ruined their whole bathroom with a product I cannot guarantee for any length of time.

I am at a loss as to what to do now as we have used the wall tile product on the walls (with the recommended clear coat) and the floor product on their floor - as recommended - and now I will need to strip all of it to re coat with an appropriate product.

This will cost me thousands to do as the time and cost of products will not be covered by the client for the fix.

I have been brought to tears twice by this product.

Do not use. Go buy the rustoleum tile coat - it actually works.

With care, this is a good product! – Buckle in, this is a long one but hopefully helpful! I thought I'd leave a detailed review as I scoured the internet for reviews and tips and appreciated anything I could find! 6 months in, and I'd comfortably recommend the wall paint in the bathroom (I didn't apply it in the shower or behind the sink so can't comment there) and would mostly… Read more ·  1

recommend the floor paint, pending on location. Entry, general living areas or kitchen- no I don't think it'd hold up well, especially with the wear and tear of shoes, inevitably dropping food/pots/glasses etc. and just with general day to day chaos. Bathrooms generally yes, just maybe not with kids if you are looking to get several years out of it, and are happy to look after them. To me, it was about getting an updated and nice looking floor that will last as long as I can stretch it, so I was/am willing to put the time, effort and care into the application and use of them.

Though of course much much cheaper than re-tiling two bathrooms, it was still a fair bit of money to outlay so first and foremost, my advice would be to see this floor paint as only a temporary measure as it's not foolproof. It will not last like a proper tile will, but as a relatively cost effective measure to get you through until a renovation or replacement tile install, it all in all does a fairly good job.

Hints: 1/ I did not complete this in a weekend. I took time off work for list of renovation jobs, mainly focussing on painting the two bathroom floors (a small bathroom and tiny ensuite). Don't rush this one.

2/ Use the online Dulux chat, they are real people and very helpful. I messaged them a lot to double check I was doing everything per their recommendation. They always promptly got back to me if they had to get answers from someone else.

3/ The floor paint is not available in UD ultra deep tint (at least when I did it) which is what you need for most rather dark colours, so double check your colours before finalising.

5/ There is a very detailed handy PDF I found online, if you google "Dulux renovation your questions answered in one place" the pdf should come up. NB: they do say to test it on porcelain tiles as it may not work, I suspect this could have been the problem for a lot of the bad reviews where the issue was no adhesion.

6/ Cleaning is seriously key, make sure the tiles are squeaky clean and not a tiny bit of silicone is left as paint will not stick, and you won't realise until you've already done the clear primer coat and are doing the colour.

7/ Once clean, I scuff sanded the floor to ensure maximum adhesion for the primer. My tiles were a little glossy. I even sent photos to the Dulux team to check I had sufficiently scuffed them. I used two or three coats of primer (because I had so much left over, again checked with the Dulux team this was ok), also leaving beyond what drying time was recommended. I also did X3 coats of my base colour as I had so much to use. The 100mm width roller was definitely the best.

8/ The multi colours/pattern took forever though I'm happy with how it turned out as the plain blue (base colour) looked very flat seeing that you paint over the grout as well. I carefully taped off the other squares after the base colour had cured, but had to go back in after I removed the tape to touch everything up a fair bit as there was paint bleed. With a somewhat steady hand, and a rag or cotton tip at the ready for any wobbles, you could probably do it without the tape. None of the paint came off though.

9/ Make sure you don't get turps or method spirits on them once they all done and cured, as it does affect the colour when rubbing it off

Longevity: I am confident I followed the instructions to a T and did everything I could to ensure the best outcome. I painted the bathroom floors (excluding showers) 6 months ago as well as some of the bathroom wall tiles to take away the feature colour on the walls. The painted wall tiles have definitely held up well, as I expected, given they're rarely touched and being a horizontal surface.

The floors have done quite well, I was sure to let them cure past 7 days, wearing socks after 7 days and not putting anything heavy on them for a few weeks. I have found they don't scratch too easily, I did a little test spot (under the washing machine spot) a few months ago and with a pin scraping in the same spot repeatedly, it does start to break the paint. I have dropped glass serum bottles by accident on the floor and have been relieved to see they haven't damaged the floors. Any damage which occurred pretty early on (accidentally dropping the bathroom door when taking it off its hinges, the ropes of a hanging ceramic pot plant, hanging above head height, broke) I just touched up with the leftover paint (even though the curing agent had expired I figured it was better than nothing) and also figure you'd be lucky to avoid damage with accidents like that on a regular tile!

I am starting to notice tiny (I must stress tiny, you'd think it was a small spec of dirt if you didn't know) points of wear in the ensuite which gets much more use than the main bathroom. I don't have any pets so I can't comment on scratches from paws etc.

Overall I would recommend this product as an interim solution to replacing floor tiles, if a lot of care and time is taken during the application process and also they are looked after when used (i.e I don't wear shoes on mine, I use a soft mop and non acidic eco-friendly cleaner to clean and I use the vaccum with the floor brush bristles popped out so the wheels aren't scraping on them). If I had floor tiles I would take care of them in a similar way as any money spent is still my money so I'd rather try to ensure longevity no matter how much I've spent. (And to be fair, I don't have to worry about the independence and lack of control which comes with kids or pets!).

My old tiles were an early 2000s beach house blue, some of which were all chipped (I used a water grade epoxy putty to fill them in and sand back before painting) so this is certainly a big improvement!

I just wish they'd do a mini bottle size for touch-ups or for creating patterns etc. as I had a lot of left over paint which has now hardened up.

Did the trick – Followed everything properly and all went well. I honestly think people here who are struggling are not as thorough as they think. The cleaning is super important, as with any paint, but more so with a tile paint. Second time using the product and although it’s not perfect it’s a cheaper solution than retiling! I looked at some of the photos… Read more ·  1

people have posted and generally looks like there are contaminants or moisture remnants. I imagine the floors haven’t been cleaned thoroughly and potentially not been allowed to dry properly. It’s not a fool proof system but painting over tiles is really a cheap solution and perhaps your expectations are too high. I reckon yall are having similar issues in other areas of your d.I.y projects. I am a painter by trade, perhaps you guys need to hire one to do it properly, just my opinion. Cleaned floors very thoroughly, razor bladed silicone, scrubbed grout etc. Applied primer one coat, allowed 24hrs to dry. Applied two coats of satin white with 24hrs drying time in between. Will wait a week before walking on it but did the same on previous floor and have had no issues. Call me for a quote to fix your mistakes :-)

Don't waste your time or money – Followed the instructions... prepped, primed and 2 coats and the result is awful. I followed the tutorial videos and everything used to do this was brand new. The paint leaves a grainy texture on the tiles (this doesn't bother me but might with others) as for the technique used in the video on painting the grout first then role over the tile....… Read more

all this did was create lines around the tiles that wouldn't go away. The paint itself took far longer to dry than the time stated on the tin and it certainly isn't scratch/chip resistant! This was a weekend wasted, money wasted and a floor that looks worse. Please don't bother with this product, my mistake was not reading the reviews before purchasing. Dulux should be pulling this off the shelf as it certainly doesn't align with 'fit for purpose' or 'acceptable quality' within consumer law.

Hopeless – Same as everyone else. Followed the instructions to the letter and the paint just comes off with a light scratch and in big strips with the tape removal. Waste of time and money.

Disaster : Wasted 3 days and money to make my tiles worse – I washed and scrubbed the tiles with sugar soap. Then sanded the tiles with 400 grit sand paper. Then treated the grout with grout cleaner. Left it for few hours. Then wipe the whole floor with a damp cloth and wiped it with dry cloth. Waited overnite. Next morning applied primer. Waited 8 hours applied 1st coat. Waited 10 hours or more applied 2nd coat. The Paint is peeling off. So frustrated.  Show details
