After 25+ years of trouble-free water filtering, someone at our house (no names - no pack drill) dropped the lid of our unit and broke it. We contacted Durand Stoneware seeking a replacement lid and - within 24 hours - they got back to us with two possible options . . . no easy feat considering the age of our system and the fact that no two are… Read more

alike.

Long story short, we picked the lid that best suited, paid a VERY reasonable price for it, and our system is now ready for another 25 years of service . . . unless some drip drops the lid again.

I commend Durand Stoneware, their products, and the service to you.

Durand stoneware filter – We have had a Durand Stoneware filter for over 15 years. The tap has just started to deteriorate (not bad for 15+ years). Decided to go for a drive to Beechmont to get a new one. They fitted a new tap and we purchased a couple of new filters while we were there. John, Judy and family were absolutely delightful to chat with, and we left there feeling we had known them for years. A wonderful experience. Thank you.

Love it had one for about 15 years just had to replace the tape – Service is impeccable and the tap came in under a week now it’s as good as new maybe another 15 years I will need a new tap. Water is the best saves me a lot of money buying water as I have done for the last month after tap broke, it was costing me 10 dollar a week and had to recycle the cask . It would cost me 520 a year with out one

Terrific water filtration system, great company to deal with – Filters our awful undrinkable tap water beautifully. There is always someone friendly available to help out on the phone when I have had questions. I highly recommend this company. Integrity +++ Show details

Heirloom Potential!! – We have had a Durand Water filter/cooler now for 9 years - it's sitting 60cm away from me on the bench as I write this!! Given to us by parents in law ... as they'd bought a new one to match their decor. Love it - enough to have bought a new one for ourselves for another property we own. Glazed heavyweight pottery of the type that lasts… Read more

hundreds of years as evidenced by the stuff brought up from shipwrecks looking like new after centuries at the bottom of the sea. This crock will be handed to our grandkids looking like the day it was bought!!

Basically the system comprises a largish outer pot, said to hold 12 litres or so - probably correct. Inside it sits a smaller unglazed ceramic insert with it's upper rim supported by that of the outer pot. The inner pot incorporates a bored hole at the bottom centre which accepts an upright ceramic filter with an extended threaded post to go through the hole, and sits on a rubber gasket. The filters are manufactured by Doulton (yep - of Royal Doulton pedigree!!) in England ... said to be of an old recipe using charcoal and silver ions and other bits and pieces .... you can hear the media inside if you shake it.

So the water gravity feeds through this filter which is screwed into the inner pot via a plastic nut ... and the filter gets rid of the vast majority of a great many nasties as shown on the packaging ... and doubtless their website too.

We are on 100% rainwater where we live, so the alternative is an undersink force filter mated to the taps. Couldn't see the need for the expense and hassle. Changing filters is a squeeze (not cheap either) on these permanently installed units.

SO - we simply fill the unit with 5 litres of tankwater each night .... and it's full of freshly filtered water next morning .... easy!!

So how long does a filter last ..... weeeeell how long's a piece of string??!! It very obviously depends upon your water quality, and the amount of water you put through it. The company puts out guidelines that they should last around 2000 litres.

And they CAN be cleaned. When the water output becomes noticeably slower, simply follow the instructions ... but it's as easy as unscrewing the filter, getting hold of a nice stiff nylon bristled brush (eg a fingernail brush - some supermarkets sell stiff bristled brushes for kitchen use) and simply scrubbing the exterior under tap water (not soapy), then screwing t back in!! We have to do this roughly every 2-3 months. Normally a filter will last a year. They cost around $36.

For hygiene's sake we always scrub the entire assembly (apart from filter of course) in hot soapy water each time we do the filter ... allow to dry thoroughly prior to reassembly.

All ours has needed is the occasional tap replacement. Perhaps every 3 or 4 years - they tend to start slow leaking over time. Durand have an online store with free postage within Aust for replacement parts. Prior to this we used to ring Durand direct ... and they are simply the nicest, most obliging people.

The system really is faultless ... unless you need lots of filtered water quickly. We are all for the more relaxed lifestyle though .... and simply cannot imagine a better system for us!!

My sour kraut – I've just bottle my first fermenting pot full of cabbage this pot is superb so easy to use geniusly designed. I had that much fermented cabbage I wondered what I was going to do with it all, but the flavour is so delicious and crunchy, I gifted a few jars and have had request to purchase I'm starting to think I should have kept it a secret. Great water filters – We purchased one of these second hand a year ago and have found them to be a quality product. The filters seem to last ok and are a bit expensive but you pay for the quality systems. The one thing i would say is to check it doesn't leak through the glaze an leave just a little calcium.

Replacement Filters. Something is not right – We have had our Durand Stoneware Filter for over four years, and until recently when we purchased a new filter we have had no problems. Now we are finding there water goes through the filter very slowly, and the ceramic filter feels slimy. We have cleaned it twice in as many days and the problem persisted, so we changed the filter and put in a new… Read more ·  1

one, and the problem has continued. Not sure if there is a fault with the filters, seems odd that all of a sudden this has started occurring. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this. We will be contacting Durand, to talk to them.

Great unit – We have had our filter for about 5 years and it has worked well; recently we purchased another brand of filter cartridge (we are not living locally anymore) and were so unhappy that we scrapped it and purchased the doulton filter online from Durand. We noticed after a week or so of using the new filter that it wasn't draining as fast as we… Read more

Good – Overall we are happy with the system but do want Durand to replace those faulty filters at no cost to us. Love the ability to remove chemicals from our water in a product that is easy to maintain and produced locally We have used the syetem for around 2 years now and up until last year were extremely happy with the system. Towards the middle to… Read more

end of last year we began to have issues with the filter that sits in the bottom of the system. We purchased 4 filters one after the other and followed manufacturers instructions in the flushing and installination of the filter. Each time the water tasted metallic. After the replacement of 4 filters one after the other I rang Durand and explained what was happening and went through the flushing process to ensure we were flushing correctly. We were advised the owner would ring us back on her return from leave whioch she did but I was unavailable. Long story short I left returned calls to no avail. I do think if you purchae a product and it is faulty it shoud be replaced but as yet no such luck.

OK – The Durand Stoneware filter unit provides pleasant tasting, cleaner water for a reasonable price. Ongoing costs are low, and the filters readily available and relatively easy to change. Unfortunately the lifespan of this unit is not as long as I would have liked as it cracks and crazes after only a couple of years. I fitted my Durand stoneware… Read more

filter container with a Royal Doulton filter and find that the water tastes great. The tap is easy to use, even by small children, and new taps and filters are readily available. As the unit is hand made there is a small gap where the lid sits on top of the filter, this allows ants and other small creepy crawlies access. My unit is about 6 years old now, and from about 4 years old the stoneware started to show crazing and tiny cracks.

Excellent – We've owned this filter a little over 6 months and have so far experienced no cracking, crazing or gaps (such as the previous reviewer mentioned). We weren't mad about the patterned styles, but they have designs for everyone's tastes, including solid colours. We're really pleased that we use this constantly, largely because it's so simple to… Read more ·  1

maintain. You just take the lid off and pour water in the top. It's very attractive - we have a plain, sand-coloured one that blends nicely in our kitchen. Water tastes terrific, with no chlorine taste. Very easy to operate. None so far.
