ANOTHER GREAT DYSON PRODUCT – I'm very disappointed that this fan has been discontinued. I've had mine in constant use for 10yrs and it's fantastic... safe around toddlers, easy to keep clean and very stylish. After so many years of use, the motor casing has yellowed but the fan is still going strong. It is a bit noisy on the high settings, but all fans are noisy. Perhaps it's… Read more ·  1

not sturdy enough to be treated roughly, but with normal handling it's fine. Overall, for me it was money well spent.

Broke down after 2 months – Like others I bought this based on the excellent performance of other Dyson products I own including a vacuum cleaner, stick vacuum and desktop fan. Like others I have found it to be very noisy above speed 5, I have difficulty turning it on and off using the remote and last night it starting displaying an F2 error code. It oscillates but no air… Read more

comes out. I have owned it for 2 months, and it has honestly been used half a dozen times (due to the noise). Sorry Dyson but this one is a dud.

Does the job but its not quiet! – It is not as quiet as advertised especially on the higher setting, if you put it on the lower you will not get the air flow properly. However it does the job and it is safer with little children around. I also like that it has the timer setting so it will turns off automatically.  Show details

Ages Not Gracefully - Overpriced and Noisy – Bought a Dyson pedestal fan based on the excellent performance of their vacuum cleaners. We were looking for a "silent breeze" on those hot nights (my fiancée and I are atrocious sleepers). Salesman at the Good Guys was well-informed and honest and told it like it is - expect the fan to be quiet on settings one to five but a bit noisy from six to… Read more

ten.

Initially found it to be OK on lower settings, though the lack of a proper slot for the magnetic remote is a design flaw and the thing is forever falling off the fan.

One year in, and the performance has fallen away badly (and yes, I keep the fan clean ). Even on setting one, the thing whines and it's also Started creaking when it oscillates like a $30 el cheapo bladed fan.

If the fan had cost me $50, I'd be satisfied. But at ten times that, we are paying "Rolls Royce prices" and getting "battered Commodore " performance. Very poor and takes a lot away from a company that in the vacuum cleaner category markets an exceptional product.

Not expensive - does the job! – I was lucky to get this, a very hot day and it was the last one left! The fan is quiet - the output is perfect - each setting differs doing just what you want it to do. Love this fan! I have now bought two of these fans and will buy one for other family members.  Show details

The most expensive noise-maker you will ever waste money on – DO not waste your money. LIke many other reviewers, I was shocked at how loud this fan is. Dyson make good vacuum cleaners, but this fan is terrible. Firstly it is obscenely expensive, however I was prepared to pay the extra money in the hope that it would be the quietest, most silent fan we could buy and I figured I'd invest in this because in… Read more

the shop it seemed quiet and it was a trusted brand name. HOWEVER - when getting it into a quiet bedroom out of the show room, and turning it up full bore (which you will have to do because it *barely* moves air at all on lower settings) it is DEAFENING. It's incredibly loud compared a $30 pedestal fan. The worst money I have spent on a fan, ever. When people say 'a bit noisy' you should really consider if you will place this in a room where you want to be able to sleep. Or watch TV, or listen to music. Because this fan will be the loudest thing in the room. AVOID - buy yourself ten mid-range pedestal fans over the next 10 years and save the money. Absolutely the worst fan ever. As there is nothing 'wrong' with it (it's not broken, apparently they are ALL this loud) the store would not take it back. It's actually turned me off the Dyson brand completely. Don't believe the hype, save your ears and your money.

Just perfect. Amazing. Best of it's class, regardless of the noise it makes (in regards to the compl – I love it. It is a but noisy. But so are most fans right!?! Wind makes noise too. You're forcing air to move in whatever direction you want, do it only makes sense. Doesn't bother me. For the countless times it has saved me from a major heat stroke, I can deal with its minimal noise making.  Show details

On the upside at least it is safe for kids – This fan is ridiculously loud. We have had it for years and it has always been ridiculously loud. For the amount of money paid I was shocked to find out how noisy it was. Effective at moving air but in my opinion, not worth the noise it makes. I dream of the day I can throw it off the balcony.  Show details

Overpriced but good – Have had my fan for a few years now and am fairly happy with it. Less noisy than our old pedestal fan and I love that it is safe around the grandkids. No worries about them poking little fingers into the blades. Remote is certainly nice to have. Just think it somewhat overpriced... there are waaaaay cheaper options out there.  Show details

Stylish and functional – I love that this fan has a remote, so it can be at the other end of the bedroom, and I can control its strength from the bed. I can't have it too close to the bed though, because the remote reads at the base of the fan, so I have to sit up and get to the end of the bed with the remote to point it down at the fan base if it is too close. I love… Read more

the shape of the fan, but dislike that my daughter feels the need to stick her head through it:( It does require regular (probably every week or two) cleaning around the air vents at its base, at least. I do this by vacuuming with the soft brush vacuum attachment. I use it every night, even during winter as white noise helps me get to sleep and sleep through outside noise. It is very quiet when on the first three settings, and does get quite noisy once you pass level 5 - it goes up to level 10. I usually have it around level 5, and a 10 when I'm really hot and need to be cooled down quickly. It is expensive, but I bought it via ebay when some retailers were having a 20% off sale, which made it worthwhile for me.

Disappointing and Overpriced – I've had my Dyson Pedestal Fan for a few years now and I would have to say the product represents poor value for money compared to other quality pedestal fans at about a quarter of the price. Main issue for me is that the fan has developed a terrible noise, a loud whine, which sounds like the bearings have gone. Also the remote is useless even… Read more

though I have changed the battery it seems to have a mind of it's own when I select a fan speed!

If I take it to a Dyson service centre I will be up for the cost of a quotation and franky should I elect to get it repaired it would be far cheaper to buy a quality conventional pedestal fan.

So it's a throw out unfortunately and a waste of money!

Very disappointed – I bought this fan 2 years ago for $450, last week it suddenly stopped working and displayed an F2 error code. Called support, they had me go thru a reset option, then plug it in somewhere else, no luck. Since it's out of warranty I'm stuck with it. They'll offer me $150 trade in value on another fan, but I have no intentions of buying another… Read more

expensive fan from them, when my experience with them is that they only last a couple of years.

3/14/17 OK, an update. I decided before I threw this away I would take it apart and see what what the insides looked like. I'm not by any means a repairman, but I thought I'd give it a try. First, all the screws are torx, which are star shaped and they're small, I had to go out and buy special screwdrivers for a t9 and t10 size. Once apart, I found a lot of dust, dirt and gunk that had accumulated on the blade parts, which appears to be what stopped it from working. So I cleaned everything up, put it back together and it WORKS! You really have to watch and remember how you take the parts out and in which order. And, for now it seems to be working fine.

Terrible fan – Paid $600 and took it back about 3 hours later. Barely made a difference as there was very little output. The air moved a little but was in no way a 'fan' type result. The main reason we need a fan is to move cooler air around and this fan simply couldn't do it. It's also noisy dispite being "35% quieter" (however isn't a big factor for us - the… Read more

fan we replaced it with sounds like a turbine and we don't care). The quality is pretty flimsy and it was very easy to knock around. The only good thing about it was ease of construction - 3 or 4 clicks and it was done.

Just don't buy this fan.

An expensive gimmick – I bought this fan mainly because it was advertised as being very quiet. It is without doubt the noisiest fan I have ever owned. Yes it is safe - if you regard ordinary fans as dangerous which I do not. It has a very poor remote control which requires 20/20 vision and is otherwise useless. The fan is flimsy in construction. It has the gimmick value… Read more

faulty design – I brought the Dyson Pedestal Fan for about 14-15 months. It has been okay, the air flow was good even though it was a bit noisy, until this morning when I moved the fan from my bedroom to the lounge room, and I accidentally bumped the head slightly against the wall. Two pieces of plastic came off and the top part just fell. For the amount of money… Read more

I spent on this fan, 5 times more than a good fan, 10-20 times more than a run of the mill fan, I would expect the fan to be more sturdy. The fan broke during our extremely hot weather, it make the experience even more unpleasant. I will not recommend this fan to my friends unless they have money to burn and can buy a few for backup.

Looks cool but not worth the hype and money – I own two dyson hot+ool table tops and vacuum cleaner that I highly praise but this AM08 is a disappointment. Bought this as a present for my dad from Myer on a special promotion. I was so excited when assembling this for him only to be disappointed when we turned it on. The packaging, instructions and build quality were top class but boy this… Read more

thing is noisy!! Cannot imagine how noisy the previous version is. On setting 5 is bearable and anything higher is sounds like a jet engine. It's not the actual motor mind you but the "whoosh" near the ring where the air comes out. 40 decibels on setting 5 three meters away is just unacceptable for a fan this expensive. In the shop it sounded very quiet with the background noise. It does throw a gentle breeze which gives a cooling effect all around you instead of a directed beam that a normal fan would. No where near as powerful as a regular fan on lower settings but the breeze is gentle. The remote sensor is on the base of the fan. It won't work unless you point towards the base and display is always lit. Remote keys are not lit or have tactile buttons. You cannot tell which is which or you are holding the remote back to front in low light. Major design flaw for bed room use. We now moved it to the lounge to wow guests. In the last few days this thing is randomly turning on and off by itself. Thanks for the two year warranty Dyson. I will be calling you soon.

Pros: design, gentle breeze, compact remote, magnetic remote holder, smooth swing, digital display, height and head angle adjustable, build quality.

Cons: noisy whoosh, remote sensor on base, no tactile feel for remote buttons, price.

Just what I wanted – WOW this is a great product. I can't sleep with the traditional blade fans going at night, this fan is perfect. No noisier than an AC, also it keeps to a comfortable temp where AC's get too cold. I have a caravan and this fan will be great to keep us cool on the hot day's. I also bought this fan to go in my bedroom. As for the chrisdi review I… Read more ·  1

suggest they put in ducted AC that may solve the problem. I have bought other Dyson products and have been very happy with them.

Too loud and not enough air flow – I bought this $650 fan for my bedroom. I was attracted to its great design and by the promises on the box about it having a powerful airflow. I thought I was buying the Mercedes of fans.... boy, was I wrong. It's going back to the store tomorrow. This is the new model AM08 which Dyson says is 35% quieter and has a powerful airflow. Turns… Read more

out, it's not quiet and it doesn't have a powerful airflow compared to any average fan.

Just to be sure, I bought an Omega Altise fan with remote for $50 and lined them up side by side so I could do a comparison test. The Dyson has a 10 speed setting, stepping up from 1 to 10. The Omega Altise has a 3 speed testing. Results are below:

On Dyson level 2, the noise is acceptable for a bedroom. It's a low level white noise but not much air comes out. Once you step up to level 3, the noise becomes apparent. You have to take the Dyson up to level 8 to get to close the same air flow as the Altise on its Lowest setting. But when you do, the Dyson sounds like a small jet engine in your bedroom. On level 10, the Dyson sounds like a rocket engine. Good luck getting any sleep!

By comparison, the Altise on Low is still a bit too loud for a bedroom. Fortunately it has 2 settings called "Sleep" and "Nature" that cycle the fan at low levels producing a pleasant cooling air without much sound. I found both settings to be great for going to sleep without much noise.

If the AM08 is 35% quieter than the previous AM03 model, I'd hate to think what the older model sounded like - a Saturn 5 rocket? Beautifully designed and made product. Expensive and doesn't deliver on claims. Loud. Modest airflow even on maximum settings.
