Unhappy with this product – Bought in 2018, used several times, filters cleaned regularly. I have used the machine on both hard and carpeted floors. Generally, when working it was a good machine. 2019 returned due to burning smell and white smoke - stopped working. 2020 returned due to burning smell and white smoke - stopped working 2022 returned due to burning smell and… Read more

white smoke - stopped working. 2023 - machine stopped working due to burning smell. Each time I was told my filters were not clean although they are cleaned regularly. I have been accused of using the vacuum for cleaning building materials such as plaster board, which is untrue. I will not be returning this machine; it will be going to the dump where it belongs. I have been so unhappy with the customer service over the years, they have failed in their due diligence to manage the situation and fix the machine. I feel that given the many times this machine has been 'repaired' then returned for the same reason, and the lack of support I should have been given a new machine or a total refund. I will now be seeking further support from the ACCC.

only lasts 2 years – We bought our first Dyson manny years ago and bought a new Dyson Ball Animal DC65 in 2018. I am happy with how light it is and how well it cleans, my issue is that the motor stated smoking and shooting sparks at the 2 year mark. The vacuum was returned to Dyson and repaired under warranty. Fast forward to 2022, 2 years from the repair date and… Read more

again the motor is smoking and sparking. Customer Service says that the repairs this time will not be covered by warranty. Will no longer be recommending Dyson to our network of family and friends.

Dyson Ball Animal Upright Vacuum - Frustrated – I have had a few Dyson Vacuum in the past and the older models were far better that this one. I have had this model for about 2 years and each time I use it, I get frustrated. To the point I am writing this review 2 years after I bought it. Each time I use it I think I should leave a review, but then don't :) Below are a few points that… Read more

disappoint me about this one - to the point I am considering changing brands.

While using it in the normal upright position, it seems great to start with, then when you want to clip it back upright, then handle keeps falling down - you need to be a little aggressive for it to click in place. You cannot use the machine in the upright position without the Flex pipe properly put back, the plastic handle is to weak on its own and actually twists when turning the hoover. This means you cannot switch between hoovering upright and using the pipes (for walls, curtains, rails etc) easily.

While using the pipe (to do stairs or skirting boards, ceiling etc) the suction causes the flex pipe to contract and the Dyson to follow you too uncontrollably . So when hoovering the stairs, a few times the Dyson nearly fell down the stairs, and when vacuuming the skirting boards, you need to keep one foot on the Dyson while trying to direct the pipe to the wall. If you put something to stop the Dyson from following you, the pipe causes the handle to fall down This is the most frustrating part that makes me want to buy a new machine.

Another frustration is when using the pipe to clean sealings, covings the flexible pipe bends at the connection where it connects to the sturdy pipe, blocking the suction. this causes you to have to hold the flexi pipe straight while the other hand directs the sturdy pipe. very awkward.

These have been happening from day 1 - so its not due to the age of the machine.

All in all, I'm disappointed in Dyson, it seems these models are not tested in real life situations - perhaps they changed their quality control process, but either way, I regret buying it.

Be warned - Dangerous vacuum - Cannot believe they are still selling this model! – I’ve been using Dyson’s since 2008. I’ve owned uprights, barrels and a stick. In fact, I used to sell them in a large department store and promote them, because I thought they were that good! When my old DC18 starting getting noisy from the bearings, I was informed they were no longer making parts for it and encouraged me to upgrade to the DC65.… Read more

Less than 18 months later, Whilst vacuuming as I always have and on the same carpet I’d been vacuuming for over 3 years, I could smell something burning and turned the vacuum off right away. I then realised not only was the ball red hot, the carpet had melted spots in 7 places! When i examined the vacuum more closely, I found the bristles had completely melted. I contacted Dyson who flagged it as a ‘Code Red’ response required.

Dyson had the vacuum picked up, but claimed it was never received. Eventually, as a gesture of goodwill, they replaced the vacuum.

Dyson’s technicians claim from my photos, as apparently they never received my melted vacuum, that it was user error and as stated in an email, “you cannot leave the cleaner head in one spot on delicate floor coverings”. (Mine had been vacuumed for over three years with the previous model - no problem) “We recommend to turn the brush bar off, if you feel the need to leave machine in the same spot for a few seconds”.

It is seriously an absolute workout to move this vacuum as the suction is way too strong. At no point have I ever ‘felt the need to leave the machine in the same spot for a few seconds’, but between push and pull, seems to be long enough to melt your carpet and that’s defined as user error! So no burden of responsibility to repair my burnt carpet.

Well the replacement also was getting very hot and smelling of burning plastic. The ball on the replacement machine would get red hot too. Too hot to touch. The suction is ridiculously strong and leaves grooves in the carpet where the rolllers have been. I have been too afraid to use it on anything but tiled floors. Dyson’s response to this, “they all get hot”. So there’s your answer, whether you want to run the risk in your home. Brand new, clean filters, no valid reason I can see.

Both vacuum cleaners fall out of the upright locked position. If the vacuum is upright, the turbine head is supposed to stop spinning., so it can’t be that. If you do not have not locked in the upright position and are not holding the vacuum, its tips so far back, the turbine head is off the floor, so it can’t be that. So it can only be ‘that I suddenly can’t push and pull my vacuum cleaner fast enough’, that I have melted carpet and burnt all the bristles on the turbine head.

I couldn’t help myself, when I saw the same model on Facebook for sale for $50, I bought it. Guess what? Exactly the same as the other two. Way too strong suction and runs red hot at the ball. Doesn’t stay in the locked upright position either.

I cannot understand why Dyson would take the risk and keep selling this machine. Care factor of zero. Admitting fault, no chance.

To make matters even more bitter for me, in February 2021, I found the delivery docket for the first machine that was sent back, but had apparently never turned up. I rang the delivery company and asked what ever happened to that item? They were able to give me confirmation that the vacuum had been received and signed for, with the date and name of the person who signed for it, exactly where and when it was meant to be. Gobsmacked!

Faultless stands the test of time – I’m really surprised to see so many negative reviews on this Dyson. Mine is absolutely fantastic! I’ve had it for 6 years now and can not fault it one bit. To be quite honest I’m surprised it still works so well considering it’s been this long and not one maintenance check-up or service. I’m also a busy mum running a busy household, this thing… Read more

gets lobbed around everywhere! Upstairs bedrooms, downstairs living rooms, the lounge, the car, the garage and even the dog beds! But one thing that surprises me the most is how great it is at sucking up dust and hair out of the carpet! every time I vacuum it’s just so easy and effortless, makes my carpets look brand new all over again.

The only issue I’ve ever had was that it was just a little bit too heavy to use whilst being pregnant but that is why I am currently eyeing off the new V15 cordless stick! (Still trying to convince hubby to let us upgrade)

Overall, 10/10 recommend. I absolutely love my Dyson DC65 Animal!

Works fantastic – I am leaving this review after using the vaccum for a full year. It has been a fantastic tool to manage keeping my home free of dust and fur of a golden retriever that only sheds tweleve months a year. The tank is easy to empty and the wire is long enough and tidy to store.  Show details

Best machine ever – As a Dyson customer for over two decades who swore by Dyson. However given our recent experience I will never purchase Dyson again. Exactly 2 years and 3 months ago we purchased a DC65… Read more

animal model and it became immediately clear that that build quality was inferior compared to the older models despite being dearer in cost. As indicated, what we suspected all along was proven, when the DC65 motor completely burn out at whilst vacuuming the home carpet at 2 years 3 month, resulting in the machine producing this disgusting acrid smoke in our home. This is unacceptable for a machine valued at over $800 in not lasting even 2 years. Recently contacted Dyson to inform them of the situation and was assured that given the few months over warranty it will honoured and covered under warranty and to send the item back. Did that only to receive a shock quote valued at the cost of a new machine.

Watch out for your back! – I had previously had a Dyson upright vacuum cleaning for years which I loved. When that finally broke decided to get the DC65 as I like an upright cleaner. Worst Vacuum EVER – What a disaster this machine is. Prior to this I had one of the original Ball Dyson and it was stupendous. I loved it. However after buying this DC65 and a faulty DC3 Stick I will safely say I will never ever buy a Dyson ever again. Not only did it breakdown within in months of owning it but it fails to stay upright and has verry poor suction.  Show details

First and last Dyson – I use a little Kmart vac every day and only drag out the heavy Dyson once or twice a fortnight to remove pet hair from carpet(which it is actually good at),yet it has still managed to break down twice in about 3 months. Both times same thing, it shuts off and smells of electrical fire and can't be switched on again. Got it back from repairs again… Read more

and have used it twice. Smells like burning, throws out severe heat, and has annoying squeak. Didn't get any answers from Dyson about it being a fault. Warranty ends in June, I expect to be buying a new vac by July. It won't be a Dyson.

Does the Vac job! Be warned it unlatches and falls over! – A moderately powerful vac. Upgraded from the Dc25 after many years. Also own The DC43, which is complete rubbish! Not to keep ignoring this design flaw, as I have reported to Dyson, and have been told it’s how the unit is designed. Seriously Dyson!!

No sensible designer would allow this flaw Dyson e.g. Car manufacturers down allow doors or boots to open at will.

Great for carpet but not so for rest of house – This is our first upright vacuum and personally I'm not sure I'd buy it again. It is great on carpet with it's vibrating/power brush head. to wash/dry one whilst still being able to vacuum. I don't think you really need a second filter now as they are completely different to the early DC05 Barrell vacuum we had. This new one seems more efficient in dust removal (I live in a very dry/dusty area) and so you don't need to wash filter as frequently. The down side to this machine? Well other than carpeted area's, it is not as good on hard/vinyl flooring; seems to be bit big/bulky and doesn't 'pick up' as easily as the old barrel machine. Steps are practically impossible. The machine is rather heavy and bulky and hard to turn/navigate around (okay for me but hard for kids). Also, the pull-out flexible hose is really difficult to use as it is collapsible, meaning it just wants to pull back inside the machine all the time so practically useless if you want to use it on the steps or pull it away from the machine. I've pulled machine over several times (or it just wants to follow your leg!) by wanting to use it up high etc.

Not all it's cracked up to be! Think twice before you regret down the track – Bought the DC65 Animal upright after using a DC04 early model for a number of years. Only upgraded because I thought the latest model Dyson had to be better than the old DC04 right? Well turns out the new model DC65, the plastic used is flimsy and not as sturdy as the older model DC04. You try to turn the vacuum on carpet left or right and the… Read more

handle will actual bend, unlike it's earlier counterpart.

The vacuum was used both on carpet and tiled surface. The brush bar didn't last long with the bristles considerably worn down. Not sure how long they're supposed to last. Being only used on carpet and smooth tiles you would think quite a while.

The Good: The vacuum has good suction and does a good job at lifting dirt and hair from dogs. We had 3 dogs with all different hair types. Worst offender a long haired German shepherd.

The bad: The hose is very stiff and doesn't loosen up over many years of use. We had the hose break near the bottom where it connects to the vacuum. Couldn't be fixed as the plastic ripped over the tight spring in the hose. Bought a new hose and its just as stiff as the old hose. Tried to loosen up by stretching hose as suggested by Dyson but it doesn't. This is a key feature that really let's it down. My partner uses mostly and this is her number one complaint. The vacuum follows her around or falls overs when using the hose... :( Dyson say PM for a fix but they have no fix, other than try to stretch out the hose. Been there done that many times...

Plastic is very flimsy. Bends to point where it feels like its going to break.

The handle clip (red) and canister release catch broke when lifting the vacuum up over a step. Again very flimsy plastic pieces which are easily broken. Of which can't be replaced individually. Contacted Dyson for replacement parts and was advised that the clips can't be ordered separately and I would need to replace the whole part which it attaches to which in this case is the handle at $20 and then another $80 for the canister. The handle could be purchased from the Dyson website whilst they advised that the cyclone wasn't available on their site but they could order for us. However said keep an eye out for clips and cyclone on their website as things may change in future. But what's available now is all they have.

Would I buy again... No definitely not. I think maybe with the older models they had something good but not with the new models. It's a shame really. I had high hopes, and was hoping to impress my other half with a new better model than the old DC04 but it's been more of a burden. I've been trying to consistently justify it but Dyson have some work to do. I hear about how the DC65 is bad constantly and how I stuffed up in buying a replacement when there was nothing wrong with the old one. So now the new one is out in the garage taking a back seat. I'm not allowed to pick the next vacuum cleaner we buy, so I've been told.

Can't justify keep spending money on parts which will only break again in the near future. Might have been a different story if you could buy the spare parts e.g. just the broken clips instead of the whole unit they connect to. Originally I only bought a Dyson for the name originally and heard a few good stories of how great they were. But I think those that did buy a Dyson that have been bitten, are probably too embarrassed to speak up because they wasted so much money on on their purchase.

Having previously used other animal vacuumes this is no comparison.

I was sick of spending $300 on a pet vacuumes for it to break within 6months or not be good for pet hair.

The nossle on this machine is good as hair and derbis doesn't get caught in it, it all goes straight to the barrel. The suction is incredible, it's amazing what it brings out of the floors and carpets.
