After a long search I went ahead with Feast watson traditional timber natural look for my new merbau deck in Melbourne. Unfortunately I did not see many reviews on this product. Also not sure why bunnings lists durability of this product as low. Despite I went ahead to buy this one as per a few reviews on this at product review site. I let it… Read more · 1
weather for around 3 weeks (had a plentiful days with rain and a few sunny days, also used hose occasionally on deck). Then applied Intergrain Timber cleaner to prep it for oiling. My first coat was done at around 5pm when the weather was around 25 degrees. The next coat was done on next day 10am when the weather was 28 degrees. While I loved the original merbau deck colour, I don't mind the darkened coffee/honey like colour after applying oil. May it will grow on me.
While the application was smooth, I did a mistake to not wipe off the excess oil after an hour or so. I thought I should let it dry off. Now I can see the excess oil at places on the planks. Not sure if I should let it weather and revisit next year. Open to any suggestions on how to smooth it off.
Attaching the photos of pre application -> 1st coat -> second coat-> the last photo has the places where excess oil was not wiped off.
4L was more than enough for my 16m2 deck. With 2 coats I think I have some left for 1 coat which I will ise it after a year.
My recommendation is to wipe of excess oil (the places where you see oil is not dried after 1 hour of application of the second coat)
I will write a follow up review after a few months of Melbourne summer in 2026.

Wow what a product!!! – So after a lot of Google research I chose this product for one reason. There were no reviews anywhere that indicated this product would turn my beautiful new merbau timber to a tinge of yellow. I just wanted it as close to its natural colour as possible, and this appeared to do the job. Is it darker? Yes, but from what I gather it’s impossible for… Read more · 1
it not to come out darker.
I hate the rabbit hole that is these products, there are so many on the market that it’s rather daunting and you don’t even know where to start.
Easy to apply, I spent the $36 on the lambs wool applicator and also the broom. I used the wool applicator, super easy to apply, the broom I didn’t love. Application reviews for all products were not to be heavy handed but really light so that’s what I went with.
I think it’s important to stress to go out after you’ve applied at the hour mark, with an old cloth and wipe the parts that still looked damp and tacky. And repeat the same after the second coat.
I’m absolutely wrapped, as this was rather nerve wracking decision.
Side note, my decking is 62m2 I brought a 10 litre tin, coverage is amazing I didn’t even use half of the tin for the whole lot so this leaves me excess for the coming year or so to use. And i obviously cannot comment on how the product will wear over the coming year, but it doesn’t matter I have heaps left in the tin lol.
The last photo is the photo of application, and first coat. And I may have the price of the product wrong, it could have been less.
I will be buying the same brand in the stain for my pine front verandah after how happy I am with this product.
Definitely the best – Have been using this product for years now and it’s the best for merbau. I have a completely weather exposed deck and by far it is the best product on the market. Tried using water based products that I am sure would be fine for partial or non exposed to elements decks. Recoat at least twice a year and easy to use when patching up scratches. Highly recommend. Excellent Timber Oil – I found this product very easy to apply and coverage was excellent (although my outdoor furniture was not overly dry to start with). I did three coats in a single 24 hour period and followed the instructions to the tee. The result was excellent after a few days of drying. A few weeks in and the furniture easily repels water and maintains a nice sheen. I would have no issue recommending this product. Show details
Great Product – After year's of water based oils and troubles with peeling off decided to use feast and watson oil. Very happy with a product, thw wood looks and feels so protective, nice colour on merbau. I was able to do the second coat after maybe 2 hours Show details
Availability ? – Have had friends who I’ve recommended Feast Watson Traditional Oil to being told at point of purchase that the oil based products won’t be available at Bunnings from 2019...???? Hope this is not the case : / I have found the oil based products far superior as long term solution compared to the great but fleeting results of the water based products. Show details · 1
Feast and watsons traditional timber oil – Not much dif from most oils but can see overlapping in some spots runs ok on application found best to leave for for twenty four hours b4 2 nd nxt apl then longer for 3rd apl and even longer for the 4th apl my guess is that is the best chance you will have for success Show details
Make sure you get the right stuff – I have been using Feast Watson for years. I have 2 large timber decks and live at the coast so they both get 2 coats a year. I think since Dulux took over they have confused customers totally by marketing and promoting their water based stuff ahead of the original oil based product. Worse still they are incompatible so if you put one over the… Read more · 3
other you get a terrible result. I only use the oil based product (Traditional) it's hard to get but over more than 15 years it has served me well. I haven't needed any for a couple of years and I am about to buy more; its very expensive but as I said it has been good. Reading other reviews I just hope Dulux hasn't messed with the formula for the traditional product.
Consistancy theory – Great product have used it before, but upon my second purchase I have been a little disappointed as it does not repel water as well as I remember, great finish looks great, but am wondering if I have just wasted a lot of money on a product that isn't serving its purpose.
Preparation is Everything – After researching widely I bought this genuine deck oil instead of one of the water based variety. Every review I read made one basic mistake, they believed what was on the can! Stated drying times are rubbish and only useful for new wood requiring several coats before being left to harden off for several days. They all recommend using an acid… Read more · 2
wash to prepare the deck and people then expect to apply the oil on top of this acid wash!! Especially don't try this with one of the water based variety!
I waited for a few days warmish weather, washed the (previously oiled with Sikkens) deck with mild dish washing water solution, waited overnight to dry and then applied the oil with recommended lambswool applicator. One coat was all it needed, but while surface dry within 2 hours to repel moisture or leaves or apply another coat, full dryness allowing for walking on took around 4 days to achieve. The final effect was luscious. It lifted the floor with a lovely satin finish compared to the dull finish left by the Sikkens oil.
