Fisher & Paykel 442L Bottom Mount (4th Generation)

Great fridge. Quieter than the newer model! – I just got it second hand. It works fine and is quieter than the newer model (fdu5) which my parents have. This is quieter than my Samsung which it replaced as well. Very happy Its the smallest fridge with plumbed ice and water so ideal for apartments. Show details
Good Fridge – Only issue we had was if you push the fridge in against the back wall it can crack the tray that holds the water. This can spill in onto the floor, or ruin your floating floor. Fridge has always maintained a good temperature, is relatively quiet and easy to clean. Show details
Noisiest fridge ever - do not buy F & P dont take responsibility – Fisher & Paykel have used a noisy cheap compressor - do not buy this fridge unless you like listening to the constant buzzing of the compressor. Their customer care centre don't care about this, they don't return calls or emails or take responsibility for the products they sell. Very unhappy customer. Show details
Poor door seals – On the whole the fridge has been good. Quiet and largely problem free.... until I started to get ice build up inside the freezer. Frost in one corner was a tell tale signal the door seals weren't working. When I put a battery powered lantern inside the freezer there where 2-3 mm gaps across half the door. Wow! This is from fridge that's only 4… Read more
years old! We've had fridges with seals that have lasted 10 - 20 years. Where are they getting them from? Someone's backyard??
Fantastic! – My Fisher & Paykel fridge is amazing. I have had it about 3 years now & have had no problems. Glass is very strong. The compartment system works great for our family. Plenty of storage space. User friendly. de-odouriser system is great. Shelves are adjustable to suit tall bottles. It did cost a bit more than other brands but it was well worth it. Show details
The servicing is a real issue – Bought this fridge a couple of years back, mainly because we were limited in what brand models would fit in the kitchen space. Within a few months we had a problem with the bottom freezer section-completely icing up on the outside of the inner cabinets. Shards of ice. We rang and no serviceman was available for 5 days. That's not very good, not… Read more
for an item like a fridge.
He came out, said he had never seen anything like it and went around the seal, put that back on with silicon sealant etc
Things seemed okay although there is still the occasional misty/almost ice in the freezer at times but it comes and goes.
Then about a week or so ago I noticed the milk and cheese did not feel all that cold when I took them out of the fridge. I had not changed any settings from what had been suggested by the technician that first repair time.
Bought a fridge thermometer and sure enough, fridge temp is at 15c-19c no matter what settings we put it on.
We paid for extended warranty (something that is usually a bit of a waste of money or so we thought). Our last fridge, a Kelvinator, lasted 24 years.
We have to wait a week for a serviceman to come out and see it. The weather is warming up.
The fridge has been operating quietly enough, but we seem to be having continuing issues with temperature. It is not easy to get any customer service.
I would never buy from this company again. It's not unreasonable to expect a service call to a fridge within 48 hours. It's a health issue.
And it's not good enough to constantly 'fix' a faulty fridge with sealant.
If you're considering F&P, move on to another brand.
Not Impressed considering the Cost – I had a fantastic Westinghouse fridge freezer of over 20 years, however it finally passed away. It was so spacious and well designed. However they don't make anymore in the UK, I wonder why cos they're too good I suspect... So urgently required a new one. True I had a space and today no one makes really that size, this was the only one I could… Read more
have, I could get slightly bigger but no one made, so went for this, as didn't want to start rebuilding kitchen as hope to move.
More expensive than I wanted to spend, over a grand!!! Anyway bought it, it arrived. Immediately I saw a defect the door of the fridge (the upper part had gaps or curves coming away from the door, I was told to take photos, which i did, and then had to wait a neon for an engineer. Yes he fixed it, but as the problem was there on arrival I asked for a new fridge or money back. I really had to fight tooth and nail to get anywhere, eventually I think they gave me a bit of money back, but not without a fight.
On the top shelf I have jars of pickles and those right in the centre towards the back have frozen!!! no logic.
It's difficult to clean, and quite honestly not well designed, and needs to be cleaned often
Oh thought wow must be good if made in New Zealand or OZ, and now been told made in China just recently, doesn't anyone realise that's rubbish, and they aint got a clue what they're making.
I have it it works at the moment, but never again, especially as I would have thought straight away they would have the [name removed] approach, and say madame of course we will change the fridge!! But that never happened
Extremely unhappy with service – I bought this after doing research on reliability and it had some good reviews. Unfortunately the first fridge I bought didn't actually work AT ALL! So I called for a service under warranty. Great that they have a 24/7 call centre with real people, but would be better if they spent the money on more technicians - the earliest they can come and… Read more
look at this lemon was a week later. Luckily the initial purchase was within the cooling off period so I returned it (to 2nds World) and got another one from the Good Guys, as it was the only fridge on the market that met all my needs. Second time around all is working well after a couple of months and I'm happy with the fridge, just hope I don't need to call on F&P for repairs.
Didnt last long before the fridge didnt work. Freezer still working but what is the food if that!! V – No, it doesn't maintain good temperature at all. Its nearly christmas and my fridge doesnt work. Will not buy fisher and paykel again!! It's loud at times. The only positive thing is its easy to keep clean. What is the good of that if the fridge doesnt work at all.
Early days but great fridge so far! – The fridge looks great and has lots of room, shelving is quality. Cools very quickly and I love the bottom mount freezer design. I only just had my fridge delivered today and a few hours after connecting to power, when you open the door, there is a noisy rattle (kind of like a vibration) but should definitely not be happening. It stops when you… Read more
close the door. I have taken a video of the noise but it could be due to the jars on the shelf/tray and the shelving is vibrating. Not sure but will be keeping an eye on it.
The crisper also doesn't slide back in properly and there is a gap at the top where it stick out. This will have if you don't level the fridge exactly and also affect the door closing. Overall I'm happy I chose this fridge but wish it had a higher energy rating and the twist ice cube trays would have been a better option in the freezer.
One of the worst buys I have ever made – This is a replacement supplied by Fisher and Paykel (under guarantee)when the previous model expired in under two years after three visits by eastern electrics who replaced various parts and eventually by an engineer direct from fisher & paykel. This model is irritatingly noisy during its operational cycle. Again after three visits. Eastern… Read more
electrics and ourselves are at a loss as to a remedy for the noise. I would suggest that prior to buying a F&P fridge/freezer you ask to listen to the noise(All refrigeration equipment I have purchased in the last 40 years has been considerably quieter than this premium brand.).If you are in the NG23 area you are welcome to call and listen
fridge door won't shut – i am not happy with fridge despite us choosing this from the choice magazine as one of the best fridges. the door won't shut, it needs to be shut manually i hate this the company said that there was not free guarantee for this that this is the way the fridge is. we tried adjusting the feet to level it etc etc. but nothing has worked until this moment. not happy
Apalling quality - Brand New - 3 weeks lowest fridge temperature 8 degresss – Purchased a new Fisher and Paykel fridge early December 2014 - worked well at first but within 3 weeks the lowest temperature the fridge compartment could achieve was 8 degrees. Ran - through day use - at 10 degrees and above. (all measured by multiple thermometers - in various parts of the cabinet) Freezer would not fully freeze water. This… Read more
refrigerator replaced another Fisher and Paykel which was well and truly no star in the refrigeration ability stakes. The old model consistently ran at the maximum setting in summer and just managed to stay below the 5 degree maximum. That model lasted only 10 years - no star in the longevity stakes either. Fisher and Paykel refrigerators appear to be just barely passable in quality. Certainly not a quality product for an Australian hot climate.

Great fridge – Previously owned a f&p top mount and loved the quality I found it reliable so after about 8yrs when I moved houses, I upgraded and left it for the tenants and bought a bottom mount f&p. The configuration/ layout works for me.... And it looks great!
Great fridge! – Bought one of these in 2006. Still going strong. Consistent and reliable performance. Great interior design is highly configurable, and everything can be taken out and taken apart when it comes to cleaning. We'll have to replace the seal soon as it's showing signs of getting a little elderly.
Excellent Fridge – My fridge is white, I previously owned an earlier model F&P Active Smart with no complaints. I considered some other brands and did lots of researching on the internet including Product Review. Was going to by a Samsung which was more energy efficient and great design inside. When I was in the store comparing various brands in the same category,… Read more
in white, they all looked ugly and a bit cheap and some of the metal seemed thin and the door handles felt like they could bend or come loose. The plastics did not seem to differ all that much. I've had this fridge for 4 months now, I have found it excellent in every way, quiet, ergonomic design, and pleasing looks. The door hinge has a cam that applies a more positive closing action which feels great, it just means you do actually have to close it, not just swing it. I purchased it from Harvey Norman and took out a 5 year replacement protection plan. Yep, completely satisfied.
It was good while it lasted – I bought this fridge because it was the closest fit to the size of the opening in the kitchen (i.e. it was the largest fridge I could fit). Although I was advised that there were other brands that were better, this has proven to be a very reliable appliance, as well as being quiet and easy to keep clean even with the stainless steel finish. The… Read more
only slight problem has been that when I last moved house the door had to be removed to fit it through the door to the kitchen, and this required the purchase of a special tool from F&P.
PS. The fridge has issues now after 12 years with leaking. The mechanism that keeps the freezer frost free has broken and it was going to be way too expensive to fix. So it has been semi-retired to our laundry where it does beer fridge duties and doesn't matter if it leaks on the floor. Easy to clean, quiet, even temperature through fridge
