DUMB smart fridge – Smart- dumb fridge ! Great fridge with a “dumb as “ open door warning.. why would anyone design a fridge to prevent the door from closing , so it can warn you the door didnt shut ,, stupid stupid. . The door always stops 200mm open, so you have to give it a second push . A smart fridge would always close !! I would never buy again for this reason only . And it cant be adjusted. Show details
Avoid at all costs – Purchased May 2017 so less than 7 years old. Came home late last night and the fridge motor was making a louder than usual abnormal tone. Checked temps this morning and it is not keepng cold 10C in fridge part. The freezer was just starting to drip. The back of the outside of the fridge was cold, it should be be warm from pumping out the heat,… Read more
may have lost gas? We had two visits when under warranty also, so not impressed. Fridges should last at least twice this time. Next one will not be Fisher and Paykel.
Junk completely scratched noisy and rusted – I had an older model of fisher and paykel fridge for about 10 years and the finish was easy to clean and I had magnets all over it. The plastic over the crisper drawers was a nightmare and was hoping that would be improved but alas it wasn’t I decided to get the same fridge after that one broke down and boy was that a mistake. The newer model… Read more
is Absolute junk. Had this fridge for a year now and from day one it sounded like there was someone inside the fridge banging to get out. It gave me a fright and hasn’t stopped. Well from day one this fridge every time you touch it you clean and clean and only to use soapy water and it scratches. I decided to put the magnets on this fridge well what a mistake that was. I gently moved one and saw immediately scratches. So I put them on and left them. Absolutely hated cleaning this fridge. Smudges all the time and scared to touch it. Ok fast forward to one year later and decided to sell it. I gently took magnets off which I had not moved around for fear of more scratches. It is not only completely scratched but rusted through where magnets were. Stainless steel yea right more like it’s painted on. Also when I first bought it I complained about the noise and I was told it is normal. I also asked what’s the best temperature to put it on and no one knew. They are just so not helpful or knowledgeable. Who wants a fridge that they can’t touch. It now looks unsellable. I will never ever buy any fisher and paykel product again. Sorry for the rant but I’m soooo angry. You’ve been warned. Junk junk junk

Corroded compressor pipe work from new - not built to last! – We just received our new Fisher & Paykel fridge and the compressor pipe work was very badly corroded… It also appears that they are welding together two dissimilar metals, which is not good engineering practice anyway as this can cause corrosion! This can obviously lead to a shortened life, with refrigeration gas leaking out over time - possibly… Read more
after the factory 2 year warranty runs out - coincidence?
Also, this is not very environmentally friendly as this product appears not built to last - just what the world needs - thanks Fisher & Paykel.
Good points: It has a really good layout, and we really love the roller drawers The doors and sides appear to be solid, including shelves and containers.
Appliances Online: Absolutely amazing service, right from the purchasing experience, the telephone staff and most importantly, the awesome delivery people who obviously had a long tough day but were still extremely professional and polite - thank you Appliances Online…

Designed by a 12yr – The fridge itself is ok. Does what it's meant to do however that stupid plastic crisper cover is THE WORST design ever. For the money paid, why would someone think it's ok to have 2 little plastic clips in place to hold up yet another and slightly heavier piece of plastic up. This gives me endless anxiety when it falls not place...I think I've… Read more
sworn each time it falls down. Please rethink future designs as I bought the fridge based on reputation on good quality and this feature is most definitely not any good.
Horrendous Build Quality and Horrible Customer Service – Our family have been loyal customers of Fisher and Paykel for two decades, and had previously enjoyed stylish and reliable products, with great after sales support. Those attributes are now relegated to history and Fisher and Paykel has become a brand we will avoid. The tipping point was last week, when we bought a brand new Fisher and Paykel… Read more
fridge and freezer.
It was faulty from day one. Kept icing over and issue became worse by the day. The motor was running continuously trying to keep freezer cold. Water started pooling on the floor, presenting a slipping hazard in our kitchen.
A week after we purchased the product, we tried to contact Fisher and Paykel. It was impossible to get through to customer service, and when we eventually did, we were transferred around with no continuity or resolution.
Eventually we gave up, and contacted the retailer and arranged for a full refund and return as the product was defective, and under Australian Consumer Law was deemed 'not fit for purpose' and therefore we were entitled to a full refund. Sadly, Fisher and Paykel have become a cheap and nasty brand, one that we will avoid.
Good fridge but faulty when left factory – I purchased this fridge 2 1/2 years ago , unpacked and installed by Good Guys and never moved by me since. I recently discovered a sizeable gap in top door when cleaning which FP technician said must have left factory like that. After adjustment to close gap requiring considerable brute force by FP I can notice a much heavier pull required to… Read more
open the door now. So how much extra electricity was wasted before restoring the door to how it should have been in the first place? Not happy to pay $170 for shoddy assembly.
Worst fridge and company – Three new fridges in a month Faulty compressor had to take 5 days off work the delivery driver never turned up No phone call or even a text Harvey Norman south Tweed blocked me just take your money and pas you on don't care how much they stuff you around Never deal with again Show details

Great fridge with a few little annoyances – We bought this to replace a similar F&P that was 13 years old (and still working, we gave it away). What I love: Flat, square design with no visible handle. Looks great in our new kitchen Freezer at the bottom - makes more sense. Love the pastry / ice shelf (we put our ice trays there) Alarm if you leave it open too long but also the ability to… Read more
mute the alarm if you are cleaning or putting shopping away. Large fruit and vegetable bins Efficient cooling, frost free Shelves are adjustable and easy to remove The white fridge has an anti-fingerprint finish. It's not perfect but does a great job
What I don’t love:
The flimsy bin cover. It’s the same quality as plastic packaging you get with kids toys and throw away. This attaches with two easily breakable plastic clips that fall out. Terrible quality and design.
Door doesn’t self-close like our old fridge
Can be noisy at times.
Overall I would recommend this fridge. Ours is a year old so we’re yet to see how many years we get out of it but we love its form and function.
Great performing fridge, apart from the occasional soft humming noise and creak – Performance The fridge maintains a consistent temperature and which can be easily adjusted using the touch side panel on the inside of the fridge. The temperature of the upper compartment (fridge) and lower compartment (freezer) can be individually adjusted. There are also 'Fast Freeze' and 'Bottle Chill' functions which can be activated on the… Read more
inside of the fridge to quickly freeze items and quickly chill bottles in the fridge compartment. The latter function is a time saver for those last minute gatherings.
There are also two plastic tubs in the fridge compartment (one small and one large) for storing fruit and vegetables. For each compartment, there is a toggle which can be adjusted to fruit or vegetable which is adaptable and flexible depending on what groceries you have bought. I have bought salad lettuce from the supermarket and have managed to keep it in great condition for over a week by placing it in the vegetable compartment.
Design
In addition, the bottle holder compartments on the side of the fridge are adjustable, meaning that they can be moved up and down to accommodate different sized bottles such as wine bottles. These bottle holder compartments are strong as the salesperson at the store I bought my fridge from removed one of the compartments, placed it upside down and stood on it and the compartment did not crack or break.
While the fridge performs well, sometimes when the fridge is cooling, it makes a soft vibration noise and odd creaking noise. This is probably not ideal for people who are sensitive to noise. The only other thing missing is a compartment to store eggs such as an egg holder. So as a result, I have rated this product 4 stars out of 5.
Usability
Although the door handles are built into the side of the fridge (probably to give the fridge door a fingerless appearance), opening the fridge is easy. There is also an alarm which alerts you if you have left either upper or lower compartment open and this can be muted by pressing the touch side panel on the inside of the fridge. While the machine is stainless steel, the doors are low maintenance I have been able to easily clean the doors of the fridge and remove any fingerprints easily.
Lastly, in terms of design, having the bottom mount as the freezer compartment is practical. This is because the refrigerated compartment is often the most often opened compartment, meaning less bending of your back to grab and place items.
Overall, a reliable fridge that performs well, apart from the occasional soft humming noise and creak.
Love my new fridge/freezer – Had a very similar size from Electrolux which lasted a long time. But to be honest I truly love the look of this unit. The freezer layout is very easy to use and much more practical than my previous fridge - Easy to see everything and plenty of room. The fridge section is roomy and easy to reach all that it contains Show details

Who designed this dog. What a failure! – Edit Jan 2024... reduced from 2* to 1* rating and 1 for value for money. If I could give ZERO for ease of use and internal layout I would. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a product as I am with this piece of rubbish. Seriously, do the designers of this product know anything about how people use a fridge? Sure it keeps food… Read more
cold BUT..... * No egg holder - seriously??? * Can't fit longer styled bottles of wine without affecting other storage spaces on the door. * Massive waste of space with those dumb slide out drawers in both fridge and freezer. * Can't pull out the middle slide out drawer without pulling out large bottom drawer * Unlike the Westinhouse which we were forced to replace after 15 years; the shelves are rectangular which leaves a huge amount of un-usable airspace at the rear of the fridge * Is that why it's called a 494L instead of a 522litre; because of all the wasted space? * Wish I could return this dog. Seriously unimpressed.
Would be a good fridge but… – I can’t use it. The fridge periodically beeps due to a known problem associated with a faulty sensor. I phoned betta electrical who subsequently phoned fisher. I understand fisher thought they had “caught” all the faulty sensor fridges - they were wrong. Looking at other reviews, the beeping issue isn’t isolated and has been reported in other… Read more

Broke down after 3 years, sent for repair, came back from repair and leaked gas. Total joke – Bought this fridge in 2018 through Appliances Online. The a few weeks ago the compressor started to run at maximum and never shut off, making weird noises. Inspected by a F&P technician as faulty, went off for repairs. Fridge came back a week later, the less than 24 hours later it had the exact same faults - so they were never fixed - and now… Read more
also emitting gas and a burning smell. This was 4 days ago.
Since then: - Fisher and Paykel claim they can't get anyone out to pick up or look at the fridge for 3 WEEKS. The exact same faults, plus more and worse, 3 WEEKS. - I complained to the retailer, who basically don't care and just push back on Fisher and Paykel. - I call and call and call Fisher and Paykel over the course of the last 4 days, and constantly am told I will get a call back and this is priority. I never get a call. - Yesterday I spoke to the delivery/pick up coordinator at Fisher and Paykel who said they are organising a truck for collection and will call back. Never called back.
So in summary, this expensive appliance doesn't last more than 3 years. Repairs by official Fisher and Paykel workshop damage and make the fridge worse. Then, they can't pick up or have someone inspect the faults they caused for 3 WEEKS. Then deflect and never follow up.
From my perspective, other than being disappointed that the appliance isn't reliable, the fact there is gas leaking from it is a cause for health concern for my family and that this isn't an emergency situation to be sorted out immediately blows my mind. What a total joke, avoid.

Door design issues – The door won’t self close as our previous F & P fridge did. This is particularly annoying as the left hand hinge models doesn’t come with a surface mounted handle as per the model right hand hinged door models do. This makes it difficult to keep the stainless steel door surface free from finger marks. Show details
Noisy, poorly designed, prone to failure – Had this fridge for 11 months and from day 1 it has been noisy. Service techs have investigated and brushed it off as the way modern fridges are designed with smaller high speed compressors that cycle on and off more frequently. Consequently, we hear it humming over the top of the tv, and when sleeping in our upstairs bedrooms we can still hear it… Read more
humming all through the night.
The no-spill glass shelves further contribute to the problem because if you have a glass jar on a glass shelf in a vibrating fridge, you get further noise with the glass-on-glass clackety vibration. In this regards, plastic coated wire shelves are a better solution for dampening vibrations - honestly "spill-proof" is solving a problem that rarely occurs.
Now, we are encountering the constant-beeping error, which google searches expose as a common problem with these F&P fridges and failure in the defrost systems - usually due to broken fans in the cold-air distribution system. Given the number of online complaints over recent years, you would think they would have changed their design. So now we are waiting on another service call.
As far as design goes, the door does not come with an egg-tray, and the extra dollars you fork out for an egg-tray won't hold a dozen eggs ... you know, the global standard in egg containers?
Would not buy another Fisher & Paykel again.
The freezer is full of frost and ice builds up – Our old F&P fridge lasted a fair number of years, after some small warranty repair, and we got used to the layout so the new one had to be F&P again. Similar experience to the last purchase, a brand new fridge has issues. This time it's an ice builds up inside the freezer, which gets open once a day, with room temperature around 20-25 degrees and… Read more
low Canberra humidity. Obviously, the door seal is faulty on the two weeks old fridge. I think that's the last product we bought of this brand, Fisher & Paykel.
Terrible Long-Term Fridge – I don't know if we just got a dud or what, but we have had this fridge for just over 2 years and its really just not good, was never great but has gotten significantly worse over the last 8 or so months and is now out of warranty. The first issue we had was is if you place food in the wrong area of the fridge, expect it to be frozen. I've had… Read more
countless things on various shelves come out with ice shards, even on the default temperature setting or warmer.
Then, within the first 18 months, the spring-type element that bounces the fridge door back to help the sensor alert you to the door being left open snapped clean off. In fact, it snapped off so cleanly and out of no where, it took me nearly 2 weeks to figure out what the piece that shot across the kitchen even did.
In November (about 6 months after the last issue) the top freezer drawer slider has popped out and I think its snapped. If you open the freezer now, the drawer slides itself out and the only way to close the freezer is to hold the drawer shut and use the door itself to keep it in place. If I remove the drawer itself and view the slider, the arm swings freely behind the shelf itself. You can put it back and as soon as you slide the drawer out it pops back out again.
The fridge can also be excessively loud of a night, sounds like something rattling and there's nothing we can do to fix it - believe me, I've tried finding it.
Was the first Fisher & Paykel product I've had in a long time and I can confidently say it will be the last.
Great looks and layout, Poor build quality – Nice flat finish and the hidden door handles. Interior plastic and plastic door shelves are of good flexible plastic and not brittle that tend to crack. Layout is excellent and very roomy. Led light is nice and bright. Well priced. A temp reading would be a nice addition. What you might not like... The stainless steel finish looks great but needs… Read more
lots of up keep with constant wiping of finger marks around and near handles. Any dings stands out unlike a white door. The door seal sucks in tight when closing and if you have to quickly reopen its hard to pull and jolts open. This is vey annoying part of the sealing function. Plenty of shelving runs on the side of the fridge so you can make any height item fit. However accumulates grime and time consuming to clean. The crisper has a stupid bit of plastic in it to help with freshness apparently. It and the brackets break easy. Hard to place back in.
We got a dud, check your door is aligned to frame properly. Our fridge was always wet throughout and dripping inside on hot days. A friend pointed this is not normal operation. We checked fridge level which was ok. Checked seal which was ok. We found the gasket was only 1mm over the fridge frame and not sealing. Removed door and packed with washers to lift up the door. Using a torch inside the fridge we could not get the door to seal to stop the dampness. We could not lift door higher. Our power bill will be quiet high as the compressor constantly tries to regulate the temp. Appears we must have got a dud. We have always purchased fisher/Paykel items for quality, value and performance. The structural build quality of this fridge however is very poor. The compressor is obviously good as it has been doing overtime for the last 3 years. We are looking at replacing the fridge with a Hisense.
12 months on I still love my F/P fridge/freezer – It is super quiet, easy to clean. Plenty of door compartments. Love drawers in freezer so easy to sort things Door alarm is handy Temp consistent though can slightly freeze products at the back of fridge Keeps fruit and veg fresh for longer Just love my fridge It works as hard as I do in the kitchen. I'm so glad it performs well and looks great too Show details
Noisy rattler from Haier. Not the F&P quality of old. Lots of Quality issues – Well below standard of it's usual competitors. Poor Construction/Quality control and has needed Tech attendances twice already since buying new from Harvey Norman (June 2020) It looks good & works OK, but lots of underlying issues. Discard memories of the Quality F&P brand. We purchased b/c of our space limitations. Expensive for product brand… Read more
that's dropping towards bottom of the heap.. (built in Thailand unlike our prior F&P fridge/freezer it lasted 20+Yrs) Declined even further compared to even 5 years ago. Our initial Installer notted Some essential parts were missing to plumb to water (incl. press. regulator). Harvey's had robbed from the box of supplied essentials prior.
1/ Rattly pipes rubbing from day one (linking to compressor inside it's housing, Got worse - then fixed by tech at 2 months old after a 2week delay). Thereafter, almost immediately, we intermittently heard 2/ another (underlying) increasingly loud Buzzing noise. F+P's Tech came 1 week after sought when it got more often and louder esp at night. Tech 2 said "compressor" prob. will rectify!
3/ DOORs had several finish/trim bits Missing but n.b.
4/ Doors no longer Self close, if pushed gently. (this feature was Removed) Below standards of 5 yrs ago.... prev models were good at this like F&P competitors. 5/ Cold water arrives eventually after 200mls of coolish water. Ie iced water only comes at around the 2nd cup (None really into 1st cup) substandard!
So looks good, works ok for now, but a bit like those newly launched unknown Chinese brand flat screen TVs. Continues Racing to bottom of class tho trading solely on F&Ps Prior Outdated Brand & reputation. Don't believe the sales double talk. They are relying on the old F&P name for easy Haier margin sales
6/ Repudiate the old F&P reputation these are now made by the 2nd rate Haier company! F&P need to prove their whitegoods quality & durability again! 7/ No longer good value nor good durability..
I hear LG is better and maybe cheaper?

Worst fridge. Didn’t last more than 3.5 years – Ongoing problems with this fridge from the beginning. Loud noises and had it serviced 3 times and eventually died last week of only have it for 3.5 years and was told to fork out $500 for parts and no guarantee it will fix the problem. Will never purchase a F&P fridge again. Show details

My best friend – I love this fridge/freezer. It is energy efficient, quiet and keeps everything at a great temp, especially with the control drawers in the crispers. The lighting is so bright making it easy to see what you have. So easy to use the freezer with the easy glide out drawers. It even has a thin draw to store pastry sheets or pizzas. Great buy. Great Fridge great size – We have had the fridge for 10 months and it is just right for our family. Temperature for winter and summer is just right and easily adjustable if necessary. Plenty of room and good sized vegetable drawers. The stainless steel needs occasional cleaning but that is a simple wipe job. I'm pleased with this purchase. Show details
Love F & P – This was to replace my 18y.o. Fisher & Paykel which was great. This upside down model had proven to be even better. 519lt gives ample fridge and freezer space. Extremely quiet motor. Good frig – Model RF522 BRPX6: Bought from Appliances Online. We were disappointed that a left-hinged door model was not available, but will learn to live with the right-hand opening. that shelf is getting fairly high in the frig, but will live with that too until we get better (non-destructive) advice. Plenty of frig shelves supplied, and we have removed one (together with two door baskets) entirely to allow taller objects to be cooled. I like the wheels on the frig - easy to move the frig in and out, and easy to lock down. The frig comes with a reasonably-extensive and helpful list of instructions as to temperatures at which foods such as vegetables should be stored, but unfortunately there is no digital temperature read-out in the frig and you need to insert an external thermometer. A built-in digital thermometer should be too much for Fisher & Paykel to supply for the price of the frig. Repairmen who came (at a price!!) to look at our former (19-y.o.) Fisher & Paykel frig, said that a new one would not last as long. We will wait and see.

if he was bringing our frig back? He said he didn't know. He didn't come. We have spoken to F&P customer service 3 times inlcuding a call to a supervsor to no avail. The time delay and the lack of communication from F&P is terrible. A 3 year old fridge with a gas leak is bad enough. I cannot recommend the carrier, the repair workshop, the customer service or the refrigerator because at 3 years the gas has leaked out. I have emailed the service department and not received a reply. What I want is my refrigerator back repaired. We understand as it was not under the full warrantee that we needed to pay for labour. Please help us to get our fridge back.
Very noisy fridge – Great design very happy with look and function wise, bottom freezer is perfect. However, main problem is the horrible bang noise which keep increasing speciallY in Night time. Can't believe Fisher & Paykel are still selling VERY NOISY 'activesmart' fridges!!! – We always supported F&P because they used to be a locally-produced brand - not so now. nightmare - 10 call-outs for the same problems, over and over again, that weren't fixed properly, including door clips flying off, printed circuit board problems, fan problems, manufacturing problems, wiring problems and more...
The main problem has been the horrible, excessive noise that would drive a saint mad - and I dare say, would break the legal limit of the fridge-noise-scale, if there was one.
The EXTRAORDINARILY NOISY MOTOR buzzes loudly and constantly, the large glass fridge shelves and the white plastic fridge and freezer door shelves rattle and vibrate constantly, the rear cavity plastic rattles and with other random noises, including the very loud thermostat and fridge body cracking noises. This Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer is beyond a joke!!!!
With the kitchen located next to the lounge room, I wish we had NEVER bought the Activesmart Fisher & Paykel which was advertised, falsely, as quiet, and has made our family life a misery and very stressful - unable to enjoy quiet time or watch TV with family and friends - with the noise from the fridge grunting away in the background - buzzing, rattling, cracking and chewing up power. Having overnight guests sleep in the lounge is impossible.
Yes it looks smart and yes it looks very well designed on the OUTSIDE but the engineering of the motor and related electricals are a NIGHTMARE. Carrots only last a couple of days and lettuce burns - maybe because of the cheap-and-nasty paper-thin plastic crisper basket cover that also falls off regularly, is easy to break and very difficult to replace. Items on the top shelf at the back of the fridge freeze hard. The shelves quake so hard in the fridge that adjacent bottles or jars clang together, adding to the noise.
We are at the point where we are leaning towards chucking our Fisher & Paykel E522B out on the street for the local Council to take it away on chuck-out day, with 'YET ANOTHER FISHER AND PAYKEL TOTAL DUD' daubed on it in marker pen and be relieved to buy a completely different brand that can promise AND deliver a quiet family fridge freezer! This Fisher and Paykel Fridge was a TOTAL, and VERY NOISY waste of money.
Great interior layout - absolutely awful constant high-pitched noise! – This is the third Fisher & Paykel fridge with the exact same interior layout (with bottom freezer) that we have had in 14 years. There was absolutely nothing at all wrong with the first 2 fridges of the same model that we had, we just decided to pass them on to younger family members each time we renovated different houses/kitchens; we loved them.… Read more
But this new model (purchased late 2019) has a constant high pitched noise that is inescapable. We have an open plan kitchen/living area (like most people these days) and, even though the television is 10 metres away from the fridge, the constant high pitched noise interrupts TV viewing, music listening, family life etc and is extremely grating. I gather it is something to do with new (more eco friendly?) compressor technology but it is horrendous. Can anyone offer any solutions? Fisher & Paykel? Pleeeease? I sooooo regret getting rid of our previous Fisher & Paykel fridge (purchased in 2012). :(
Fantastic refrigerator, perfect size, ample space, well designed – Refrigerator temperature is stable, consistent, reliable. Design of the bottom drawers is good, ice tray allows options for freezing and accessibility. Side handles are unobtrusive and easy to open. Space is ample, easily accessed. Show details
