On Tomakin road, a short distance from central Mogo, in well-kept gardens edged with a variety of flowering shrubs, you will find pet-friendly 'Foxdog - distillery and brewery'. Attached to Foxdog is a cafe/restaurant which had been recommended to us. The menu is not extensive, but what it offers, is done well, judging from the dishes that we enjoyed for lunch. We began with a 'tear and share', accompanied by a small dish of blended balsamic and superior olive oil. The 'tear and share' arrived, shaped like an inverted pudding bowl and wafting aromas of perfectly cooked flatbread as we cut into it to deflate it. A perfect way to start a meal. I had a duck thai salad which proved to be an exquisite blend of flavours. One of our party of three enjoyed fish tacos and the third guest had a ploughman's lunch featuring, among other things, locally produced ham and cheese. Among the drinks, including tried and true beverages like lemon, lime and bitters, there was a small collection of gins. Two of our group opted for a rosella gin which came in a large crystal balloon-shaped glass with a stem. Very pale pink and sparkling with tonic and ice it was an unexpected touch of elegance for a lunch in the country. Surprisingly, for a middle-of-the-week lunch, the eatery was quite full of customers who all seemed to be enjoying their dining experience. We were served by enthusiastic and friendly wait-staff, some of whom were still in the process of learning the ropes, hence some delays in bringing the food to the table. Prices were what one would expect from a restaurant that is a cut above average. Five stars would have been my rating were it not for the fact that the glass of Rose that I ordered was 'off'. We learned later, that it had come from a bottle that been opened several days earlier. I was not charged for the wine. Maybe it is best to request a taste of what you are about to order, if it is a wine that is new to you.
