Great Purchase – I bought a 2003 Holden Cruze YG at 149,000kM and I can say this is a great purchase. My partner loves it. It is cheap to run and goes a decent mile. It has Overdrive O/D function for driving on freeways A/C is excellent and chills you on warm days at lowest fan. Size is excellent for city driving like Melbourne as it has a small turning… Read more

radius, you can easily park in smaller parking spaces when others can't. The mini-SUV shape provides enough height to see above other cars.

It has a lot of compartments around driver and front passenger seats makes it great for day trips.

Back seats are retractable too. It provides for a great trunk space to carry large objects. We transported a 6seat dining table with this (packed in carton)

I think this car is a Suzuki Ignis with modified chassis built to Japanese quality. A gem of a car.

Notes, this is not a 4x4 off-road car. Engine is too small to for such activities. Car turns nicely.

Okay, but nothing special – This is basically a Suzuki Ignis dressed in Holden clothes for the Australian market. The Suzuki version, GLX 1.5 4Grip, was never sold here. My car was laid up out of state as the rego had expired. It had 80.000kms on the odo but was pretty well immaculate otherwise. As soon as I drove it I knew there was a problem. It was noisy in 1st, 2nd and… Read more

3rd gear. Didn't take long to find out the manual model, whether a Holden badged Aussie version or the Suzuki version sold in most other markets, has a reputation for destroying its gearbox. Usually quoted as a $2000 - $3000 repair. This is because most people keep driving the car after it starts making a noise. It gets noisier and noisier until shifting gets really hard or something lets go. That's why it an expensive fix. The problem begins with the input shaft bearing going bad. This is a $50 part but means pulling the gearbox, stripping it down and replacing the bad bearing. R & R usually runs about $700. Because the car still drives okay people ignore it until something breaks hence the big $$$ to eventually fix it. I was offered the car for $300. Since I'm able to do this kind of work myself I bought it and fixed the bad bearing. Okay I ended up with a pretty good car for $350 but it's hardly the pinnacle of automotive engineering. It's basically a generic hatchback with faux 4WD styling and a rudimentary AWD system that sends some drive to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. Hardly worth it to be honest. The Holden Cruze version we have here in Australia has some unpleasant dynamic/harmonic driveshaft issues when accelerating hard. This is because Holden specified 25mm higher springs all round than it's Suzuki original. This puts the drive shafts at rather too acute an angle. If this really bothers you then swapping the springs for Suzuki Ignis items will lower it to the design position and get rid of the thrummy harmonics when accelerating hard.

N.B.There is one other thing I should point out with the gearbox. The differential carrier in early ('02, '03, early '04) Cruzes and Ignis's would sometimes break - and rather catastrophically. I suspect this may be associated with people continuing to drive the car after the gearbox starts to get very noisy and the gearbox shafts start to flail about however Cruzes and Ignis's made from sometime late in '04 until the end of production were fitted with an upgraded diff carrier.

It's probably wise to fit this upgraded diff carrier to an earlier model if it's being stripped down. If you can't do this work yourself there is a company in South Australia called Wakeline Automotive who can help. They usually install the upgraded diff carrier in any Cruze/Ignis gearbox they repair.

Disclaimer: I have NO affiliation with them but believe they offer a good service for people who can't do this work themselves.

Great car – My car is Holden Cruze YG2 Automatic and has 85K on the clock. I have this car since 2012 , it had 65K on the clock. Really reliable! interior looks brand new even after these years so sun didn't effect it. I just changed the oil and filter so far without any problem. Very easy to park. I checked the fuel consumption last week it was around… Read more

Changing the oil is so easy so maintenance is as simple as buying oil filter and oil.

Honestly i wanted to upgrade to used BMW X5 (2004-2007) but after inspecting many x5 i changed my mind, I compared it with my little car , my car way cleaner than most of them ,all bmw that i have seen had interior peeling problem and i asked the dealer the reason and he mentioned that they used a cheap quality material.

Will keep my little SUV for coming years.

Inlove with the car, great to drive – Awesome car! I have the 04/05 model, manual. It was bought at 160km+ I learnt to drive in it as well so it has had a lot of clutch wear but still going strong. Gear box is noisy in lower gears as it may need replacing - $2500+ though, so I'm waiting for the car to get a bit older. I find it very easy to park and being a taller car the sitting… Read more

Great little car – Love it! Car is auto with about 160,000 on it and no dramas. Bought it last year, haven't had any problems. Suzuki engine (This car is also a Suzuki Ignis) Fills up for about $60 and you get plenty of KM's for that. Handles well, aircon frosty which is great here in QLD. A little slow off the lights if you have the aircon turned up but that's a… Read more

given for little autos I've found. I bought the car because I wanted something that sits a little higher off the road without being a big 4WD, so it's perfect for that and you can find it in a car park. Great car, love it. Inexpensive to run, easy to park, great little car. I little slow getting from 1st to 2nd but that's only if I'm rushing off on a green light.

Skeptical at first, but have been very satisfied with this car – My fiance and I have owned a 2005 Holden Cruze for about 4 years now and we have been really impressed with it so far. I've never been a fan of Holden, but I can say that this car is great if you want something small and zippy but want a little extra room and control compared to some other hatchbacks/micro-suvs. It is easy to drive, great… Read more ·  1

handling, has AWD and is easy on your wallet when it comes to the petrol pump.

The only complaints I would have is that the auto-transmission is somewhat reluctant, particularly from 1st to 2nd and doesn't shift up as promptly as it should. At the 50,000km I had some issues with loud brake rumbling noises which would occur occasionally but they have been resolved. The brakes are a little spongy and don't feel as sharp as I'd like but aren't awful either.

Overall I have been very happy with this car and will continue to drive it in the coming years. Great handling, easy to drive in poor conditions due to AWD, nice driving view, easy to park, reliable, spacious interior for its size, not overly powerful but zippy enough for its size good fuel economy. Timid transmission, especially from 1st to 2nd, somewhat "spongy" brakes, some brake noise/squeal.

!00000 klms up – We bought the Auto Cruze as a demonstrator in 2004. At 100,000 klms it has had 2 new tyres (front), a battery & windscreen wipers. I do my own servicing, very easy. It did get recalled by Holden once, & they repainted the mirrors under warranty. Very very cheap motoring & my wife wont part with it. We bought it because it was very easy, being high, to strap the grandkids in their seats in the back.  Show details ·  1

OK – Bought my Cruze in 2002 August. Had a bearing go in the gearbox which was replaced under warrenty. (Great service from Holden at the time) Was told at about 45000km I needed to change the clutch but and was told it was not under warrenty. Didn't accept the service departments advice and have now done 198000km trouble free and been very happy. Now… Read more

I'm getting concerned. I phoned Holden to ask how much it would cost to have the left inner CV joint replace and they advised that they couldn't get genuine parts. They refered me to a Drive Safety "Specialist" to get it repaired. The "Specialist" could not help me. I then gave another Holden Dealer a call and asked for a price. they said they would get back to me. (Still waiting) They then souced the unit on e-bay for $125.00 and fitted it myself in 1.5 hours at a mates place.

Now I have the gearbox noise! Sounds like a $2500.00 + bill comming my way. What can I say for 198000km (9yrs) of reliable transport. Ride height. Nothing until now.

Cant Complain – We've had our Holden Cruze for two years, we bought it from a family member who actually reluctantly sold only because we were so desperate. Love this car. We are giving it back to family soon due to needing to buy a proper 4WD. Will be missed. From what we have seen on car sales it seems to hold its value well. The fuel economy far outweighs any… Read more ·  1

cons.

We have been very thankful for the lift-up boot that makes a great shelter for picnics and getting groceries out the back in the rain. i've been amazed at the amount of large items we can actually fit in this car... wow Fuel efficient - seems we only fill up on fuel once every fortnight, and we do a fair amount of daily travelling. Cute car - everyone always asks about it. It seems to balance between petite for women drivers and still masculine enough for my husband to be happy to drive. Very zippy car to get around in, always feel like we can squeeze through traffic and parking spaces. Turns well around tight corners. fantastic interior, black seat fabric doesn't fade, easy to clean. Small car but still has plenty of room in the back for a car full of people. Feels powerful. Apparently our family member forked out $$$ for a replacement gearbox, thats been the only major issue. Clunky gearbox, noisy and really tough to change gears smooth. always wants to leap forward when driving and changing gears. A little noisy when driving on highway top speeds. Terrible cupholders that dont hold anything bigger than softdrink can. Feels a bit "rev-vy" when we try and get up a hill/speed. Havent got any major complaints really.

My Cruze has done the hard yards – Bought my 2005 Cruze new with 26k's on the clock, Warranty claims; Loose lower control arm-fixed at 1000k service, Gearbox went at 95000ks, fixed under warranty. trip through three states, and just came back from Tassie (3000k+). I have replaced the CVs and normal service items. I have added 26mm raised springs and nudge bars front and rear also A/T tyres. I am about to replace the front brake pads for the second time and the rear shoes for the first time. If this car had low range it would be perfect, It could use more talk, so I am considering a 2lt engine in the future.

I will keep this car for life. Reliable, styling No low range

Terrible – i bought the car for its supposedly excellent fuel economy and its all wheel drive. It failed on both fronts it was easy to park fuel economy was terrible. nowhere near the 5.8L/100km specified. they said , they could not find anything wrong with it. Second gear still stuffed to this day though out of warranty now and will cost too much to get fixed so I am dealing with it. Good – I say that its an alright car overall. I mean every car has its pros and cons. But other than that i enjoy driving the Cruze. Haven't had much trouble with it. Except that ppl at Kmart tyre and auto did a crappy job with my tyres. Never going there again. Its small and very easy to park, its high but not like the terios. Cruze is high but doesn't sway lik the terios. The inside is small however it can still fit a baby seat. 2 in fact.

Bad – This car is not reliable at all. The tyre is not standard and cost more. The costs of parts and service are too expensive for a mum who only works part time. Bought one in 2003. Like the model and the size. It is high so helps the driver to see and it is small so it is easier to park. Bought as an ex-demo and straight away not happy with the gear.… Read more

Always have problem with reversing but when I complained about it, I were assured that there is no problem. Gradually the engine sound becomes rough and the gearbox very noisy. Then the radiator leaks (replaced with a new one by an RACV listed mechanic). I was convinced that the gearbox is unusually noisy and I remember about a transfer case recall that haven't been done. Back to Holden and get the recall done as well as complained about the gearbox. Holden checked and replaced two bearings in the gearbox but I needed to pay some of the cost. Felt happier but one week later found coolant leaks. This time it is very obvious from the hose. At this stage, I am sad again. I didn't expect to have this problem on the first five year of my car. I am a mother and works part time. Mostly I use the car for transporting my children during school time and doing my errands.

Good – Has been a great little car, but at 75500kms, I think it should have lasted a lot longer. I'm not sure that I am going to be able to afford the cost of repairs I've had mine for 5 1/2 years, great little car, can fit a full size drum kit in back with seats down. I have only had 1 problem with a window motor. Seats are uncomfortable on longish trips, back seatbelts, which self lock to secure baby seats, also lock on passengers and can only be unlocked by undoing and completely retracting. Absolutely gutless on hills of any grade, and the cost of the tyres. ...then today, driving at 100kph, it appears that the transfer case has s--t itself. Still need to wait for the final diagnoses
