I expected it to be good but still had no idea it would be this good! Yes, it's a bit expensive, but worth every cent. I'm slowly recouping some of the cost by hitting friends and neighbours up for a beer each time they bring their knives over and have no hesitation in heartily recommending this product. Excellent quality and results.

Purchased in at Horl for $269.

A quick update. I've now sharpened around 60 knives (earned four beers) and the little beast just keeps working. I'm very happy. I've found with any flexible sort of blade it's best to put magnet more toward the pointy end rather than the middle and it makes everything so much easier. Only done one cleaver but that was easy enough by simply putting the magnet and knife on the counter and the roller on top of a couple of cutting boards to give it the extra height. Yes, it was a bit dear, but I don't mind paying a little extra for dinkum quality and I suspect it's going to last quite a long time.

Best Knife Sharpener for Casual Users – The HORL 2 Pro knife sharpener is an impressive tool that combines simplicity and precision, making it perfect for a casual knife user like me. It’s incredibly easy to use, and even as someone who isn’t a sharpening expert, I found it intuitive and straightforward. The strong magnets securely hold the knife in place, so there’s no fumbling or awkwardness during sharpening. It offers both 15-degree and 20-degree angles, offering versatility for different knife style. (Note: to determine the bevel angle of your knives, get a maker and draw down one side of the blade. Try one each of the angles on the sharpener and see which one completely removes the maker - that's your angle. Mine ended up being 15 degrees. You can also technically re-bevel the knife angle to your preferred angle but this will take a long time.)

One of the most innovative features of the Pro model is the planetary gear system. This clever design allows the outer roller to turn 3 times faster than the speed you're rolling, significantly reducing the number of strokes needed to sharpen a knife. For me, it only took approximately 15 strokes (up and back) on each side of the knife with each stone to achieve a level of sharpness better than when I bought my knives. This efficiency was a game-changer, making the process quick without compromising on results.

The sharpener comes with two sharpening stones: a coarse, diamond sharpening stone and a fine, ceramic honing stone, both of which are replaceable by simply unscrewing them. This is a thoughtful touch, ensuring the tool’s longevity. However, I did notice a slight challenge when sharpening the tip of the knife. To ensure the roller contacts the tip properly, you need to curve the roller slightly at the end of each stroke. While not a dealbreaker, it’s something to be mindful of.

There’s also an optional Premium Sharpness Kit available for those who want their knives to reach razor-sharp or shaving levels. Personally, I’m satisfied with the sharpness I achieved with the included stones, but it’s great to know the option exists for those who want to go further.

The HORL 2 Pro has one major downside - it's price. The price is undoubtedly steep, and while the results are fantastic, it’s a significant investment. For me, though, the combination of ease of use, build quality, and the sharpness it delivers made it worth the cost.

Overall, the HORL 2 Pro is an exceptional sharpener that elevates the knife maintenance experience. While it’s an expensive option, it delivers on its promise of sharp, precise edges and is ideal for anyone who values their knives and wants to keep them in peak condition.
