Tied old Husky after a decade of work – I have finally decided to replace my 2242 mower after nearly 10 years of maintaining 5 acres of mowing on hilly paddocks with rock ridges (my “land mines”) and although I have to periodically change the worn blades, the spindles have not suffered. In spite of this rough work, unlike Paul P, I have not experienced a bent chassis, or the front… Read more

wheel problems of Gordon A. Like Mark W towing a trailer worked well even on slopes. Like Andre I spent a lot of time cleaning out the clogged catcher when the grass is wet and I am not able to mow long grass then. I have cut drier paddock grass so long that I have to stand up off the seat to check my progress, but then it needs a second cut to finish the job. I also have experienced a problem with the central blades not cutting the grass so I have to place the (L) tyres on that the 2nd time around so the (L) side blades cut it, cutting only 1/2 the mower width at a time. Now that the alternator won’t charge the battery, the mower is running rough, even after servicing, and the last straw is the blades do not engage any more, this old machine has reached the end of it’s life with me. This was my second Husky but it is the last as I need something more durable . My next mower is a John Deere S120 so maybe 2 blades will be better.

Great mower/ tractor – I purchased this second hand 2010 model last year 2021, had 680hrs on the meter, however the previous owner suggested a fair chunk of that was the key left on by his son. I've done 30 hrs mowing and cannot praise this enough. I serviced it when I received it, new belts, blades etc and its never missed a beat. Only two issues that require sorting are the discharge chute needs replacing and the front headlights dont work. Show details

Piece of crapola – Done less than 200 hours. Chassis bent and had to reinforce the front end. Transmissions mounts cracked and had to rebuild those. Voltage regulator died and while offered under warranty, they wanted to do it and it was going to be a 2 week delay... nope. I'll do it myself. All this on a basic 1 acre grassy lot. Never again. Show details

No sever problems at all – I've read these repairs and am surprisedas the mentioned problems did not occur with my 2015 model. I had three issues just after I got it home and went for a run; 1) the blades were cutting at an angle cutting a groove on one side 2) Not discharging the grass on long stuff 3) Had to push down hard with the heel to move backwards Took it back to… Read more

the local dealer (40km) and chewed his ear. He had it two weeks as he was waiting for parts. When they delivered back to me, it was a different machine. They replaced the blades, pulley and drive belt with "high-speed" gear - it now throws the grass across the road !! Just drive it at a speed that allows the machine to do its job. And wet grass has ALWAYS been a no-no. They aligned the blades and locked them in position. They adjusted the heel/toe and all is now good. The fabricated deck is solid and stands up well when smacked at high speed by limestone rocks.

I live on about two acres with cat-heads on the very wide footpath (rural New South Wales) and yep, after the first cat head dropped a rear tyre,, I put some "No More Flats" all the way around. No more issues. I maintain my own gear and grease all points including hubs. ........probably why I've had no problems.

By the way, I gave the dealer a rev-up about his pre-delivery - that crap wont happen again

Worked on acreage for 4+ years. Very happy with it – After 4 years of use, I feel qualified to speak about this machine. The most surprising thing is that we're still on the original blades, which given we are on acreage, is a big surprise. I've mowed grass, twigs, weeds and many other things and this beast just keeps going. It's no zero turn, but then that's not what I bought it for. It's a great workhorse with the trailer on the back, hauling logs and other stuff around the property.  Show details

Excellent machine – Just bought my second machine. First one 4.5 years and 350 hours cutting grass in a public conservancy I would say medium to heavy cutting and pulling a trailer from time to time. Not a single problem. Service myself which is easy and quick. Spares cheap and available even in darkest Africa.

I spent more hours under the mover rather than on it! – To date 150 hours running. 1 Acre block. Routine Maintenance completed as per the book Following issues: - Within first 12-month; issues with engine chocking. Twice went back to get looked at dealer. Problems were addressed and No issues since - Fuel line burst within first 12-month, incorrectly routed at the factory closely to the belt; this was… Read more

replaced on warranty - Within first 12-month, Front head lights cable burnt as was incorrectly routed at the factory, too close to the engine. Could not start mover. Figure that one out myself. - Battery replaced within first 24 month. - Front wheel spider broke off. Replaced wheel and tyre. Was Told no warranty - Similar time as above wheel alignment went way out control. Told by the dealer that it is not a warranty and that I had to upgrade to different link system to avoid issues. Purchased and installed. Corrected issued to somewhat degree but has been getting worse since. Suspect issues with ball studs and the hub as wheels are all over the place! - Lost driving belt number of times. Told by the dealer that drive belt possibly got stretched and I need to replace. I did not get even to 80 hours by then. I was told that typically I had to replace it around 100 hours, so I bought a new belt and replaced it. - Few weeks in, mower stopped and would not move, engine was running. Under closer inspection found that chassis brackets to transmission broken off and this is really what getting my driving belt off, not the “stretched belt” as told by service centre. - Once again, no warranty, so I had to make brackets to fix transmission back to the chassis. - Last weekend after moving for about 30-40 minutes experienced loss of power when driving up hill. No issues running on flat. Tried to cut again in few days, same thing, mower was running OK at the start, but after 30-40 minutes loss of power going uphill. Looked under the machine and found oil leak under the transmission. Told by dealer that my transmission was cooked and need replacement around $2K! Please think twice before buying this.!

Not built for hard work – I have 2 Husqvarnas; they are far too light in construction for anything other than smooth lawns in suburbia. I will NEVER buy another Husqvarna - overpriced & overated. The engines are very good, but they power mowers that are far too flimsy for hard work. My next mower will be a Hustler Raptor. Show details

Very Disappointed – We have less than one acre to mow and it’s reasonably flat and level ground with some mild to moderate sloping areas. Experienced most of the problems others have mentioned including Front wheels falling apart, the deck clogs easily when grass is wet, hopeless on longer grass, Transmission failed ($1,000 to fix). Will never buy a Husqvana product ever again. Show details

Does a pretty good job ...but could be better – i have to mow vacant blocks with mine...and it gets worked very hard right through summer. I have tried many different blades to eliminate the problem of not cutting first time over. In the 12 months I have had mine I have had to replace 3 sets of blade, 1 deck belt and now It looks like I will have to replace the deck as it is not thick enough… Read more

(most of these faults are caused by hitting not vegetative objects). The bottom guard eventually sheared off and now one of the blades actually cut clean through the deck (near my foot).

What I like about it is the fact that the engine (25hp Kohler) just keeps going regardless of the summer heat. The original engine had to be replaced within 12 months of purchase. What I dont like is how little traction the front wheels have when turning. The reverse pedal is very hard to press. And the deck is too thin. I would prefer it to cut first go rather than second or third.

Really really bad – Woeful quality, I have had constant problems with this mower. I have 2 & 1/2 acres of lawn, some flat, some undulating but not steep. Some of the faults I have had are a torn transaxle frame, broken front wheel, broken steering wheel, spindle gear came loose, things just keep falling off. Plus it doesn't cut the grass well. Have to go slow over thick patches, have to recut the same areas. This wasn't a cheap new purchase. Buy another brand.  Show details

Husqvarna and Dealers should hang their heads in shame – The 2242 is the perfect mower for those with a liking for mowing three times. Front left wheel replaced twice. Battery lasted six months. Tyres so thin that they are… Read more

more repair plug than tyre. Both dealer and Husqvarna refused to take ownership of the problems and hung me out to dry. Wondered at the time why they were willing to discount (paid $4300 in Dec 2012). Did not take long to come to a full understanding. I have gone back to the push mower to mow my 3 acre yard. Harder work but faster and a much cleaner job. Please do not waste money on this rubbish. Update- In October 2017 Husqvarna technical services advised me that they are fully aware that the blade speed of the mower is insufficient to cut properly and that the front wheel issues are known to them; and 'if the front wheels do not have a slight toe in the steering will be heavy and considerable additional load will be placed upon the wheel rims and bushes'. Further 'there is a kit that significantly increases blade speed by using different pulleys and drive belt' and 'adjustable steering arms that allow wheel alignment to be adjusted to the correct toe in position'. Happy to have these 'kits' fitted AT MY COST!

Only 2 seasons old and problems already – This machine actually mows OK but I have a few gripes with it. We bought it as a run out model and immediately after delivery, it wouldn't start and had to go back to the dealer. It returned after about a week but the "reverse mowing lockout" has been disabled. Not sure if this affects anything else. 2 years further on, I've just had to replace… Read more

the front right stub axle and bearings. They had worn out until the wheel just flopped around. Rang the dealer as it is still in warranty but they have a 4 week backlog for warranty work. I can't wait that long so I bought the parts which were easy to get, simple to install and not too expensive - $110 for the stub axle, the 2 bushings, a new external boot and 3 washers. Bottom line was I could find no trace of grease in the old bearings so I'm going to assume the factory/dealer skipped that bit. Yes!, I have greased the LHS. The other issue is the tyres kept going down but that isn't a Husqvarna issue, some "Goop" in the tyres have fixed that"

Apart from that, it starts easily (It has the Briggs engine) but needs to crank for 10 seconds or so on choke, probably to get the fuel system primed. The electric blade engagement is a joy and I've had zero issues with the engine, deck and transaxle. Hoping to get a long life out of this orange beast.

One thing that I find a bit "slack" is the decals/labels on the rear near the fuel cap aren't fuel proof. Spill a bit of fuel on them and they just fade away. You would think they would use fuel proof paint.

BTW - all the words about mowing wet grass as "fairly" true. Mine clogs if the grass is really wet but normal "dew" type moisture and it seems to cope OK.

A Strong Mower Overall But With A Few Poor Aspects – Actually mine is a YTH2242TDF. Not sure of the difference to the ~TDRF model listed on this site. I'm adding this review on a discontinued model because I'm fairly sure some of the bad points of this mower have been repeated on current models. So new buyers check carefully! PROS: B&S twin engine is strong although can be a lazy starter if not… Read more

serviced - pulls heavy loads and copes with heavy grass, fabricated deck is tough (I give it hell) although it does clog with long wet grass but many others do too, limited Slip diff works well on my rough sloping lawns (main reason I bought this mower - hard to get stuck even on wet grass), love the reserve fuel tank feature, cuts well when blades are in good condition (really long grass excepted).

CONS: plastic discharge chute is rubbish - too long and fragile - I've broken 3 - now I cut them shorter and cut off the lower edge to prevent it dragging when reversing (as others have noted), steering is poorly designed and fails easily when stressed (e.g. from rough ground and bumping into things) - so I've had to replace the "gear sector plate" twice due to worn off teeth (resulting in total loss of steering) - IMHO this is the weakest part of this mower and I have seen it in the showroom on other models, the issue can be improved (not cured) by installing an appropriate bolt & nut assembly up through the curved slot in the "gear sector plate" and into the chassis this prevents the plate from flexing down too far when the front wheels hit something and stress the steering thus reducing the wearing of the teeth on the plate.

can't cut properly – From the day I bought this mower, the LHS has cut at an angle down to the centre, so there was a strip 10mm lower at the LHS centre cut as compared to the RHS centre. next cut, nothing had changed.

So they took it back again and saw that there was a dent in the chassis which could only have been done before the deck was fitted, ie, in the factory. As they had another comparable mower with a cooked motor, they swapped all my running gear and deck onto the new chassis. Guess what - minimal change and another photo to the dealer. So now they say check tyre pressure, which is rubbish as that will only change outside cut.

Strangely, my neighbour has the identical mower with the identical problem, which has to be more than chance!!!!

Gets the job done – Hi I have had my YTH2242TDRF for two years and I have to say it has clocked up 450hrs still going strong. It's use for commercial purposes and leaving strips of grass is the only thing I have trouble with. I found by changing the blades to gator blades made a difference. Try before you buy the YTH2242DRF - stick with greenfield – Own a greenfield and love it, still have it but wanted a wider deck as i have a lot of grass to cut. Did a lot of reasearch on specs etc, read the forums that said husky leaves tufts of grass behind but thought perhaps owners were picky, i also spoke to a local husky retailer who told me that he also heard stories about it leaving grass behind,… Read more

anyway bought my husky Jan 2014 but it was coming to the end of mowing season so could not give it a full run, i did manage to use it on some 20 cm dry grass at the time and yes it was leaving tufts of grass behind, spoke to my dealer and took the mower back to him and he said they could not find anything wrong with it, he said he had a garden contactors who said it was a great mower.

Dec 2014 plenty of grass so now i can give the mower a real good test still new with only 20 hours use, my results:

- the husky is good when you have good rich lush green grass it cuts through it no problems and leaves a nice cut but when it starts to brown off forget about using the husky once the grass starts to brown off and is not thick definently leaves tufts of grass behind and it needs to be mowed over again which means using more petrol and taking twice as long instead of halving my mowing time.

very dissapointed in the yth 2242drf after spending $4500. I was also looking at the time at the JD X320 which i have smaller model at work and does a good job however i liked the build quality (metal) and went for the husky how wrong i was.

my next mower will not be a husky.

for a world wide organization Husky i am very dissapointed with this product and you should lift your game and do more research on your mowers and give customers a mower that cuts all forms of grass, i re iterate my greenfield leaves the husky for dead, 30 cm wet grass or dry comes out of the chute with no problems i just wish they had a wider deck.

if you intend buying this model get a demo on green and dry grass at different height, my dilema now is do i get rid of it and lose money on it or keep it and use it when i have plenty of green grass.

Two last point lousy reverse, speed not consistant, chute badly designed scrapes and warps in reverse and is to wide.

Husky i am happy to discuss these problems with you.

Very, Very Dissapointed – Bought this mower in 2011 and have had a heap of problems with it. 200 hours of use and probably as many hours sitting at the dealers getting fixed. loom replaced due to the cutting belt coming off and tearing the wiring out of the clutch. Then it developed a short circuit in the clutch and blew a fuse every 10 minutes.

Deck has recently been overhauled at a cost of nearly $400 because I did what the manual said and cleaned it, thus rusting the bearings.

Blades have fallen off, reverse when cutting shut off has stopped working, had to drill a hole in the fuel cap so it could breathe and not stop after 10 minutes and the list goes on.

Don't think the designers have ever used one – On my 2nd Husky as the first one died, even though I told the dealer what I wanted it for. My new one ( YTH 2242 ) cost $ 5,000 but came with a bonus free trailer. I found out after a few hours use that this is to pick up the pieces that fall off as you go along. After 2 and a bit hours the throttle handle fell off - this is not covered by… Read more

warranty apparently as I should have noticed and checked that no bits were about to fall off. Then the plastic shute protector broke off - it is designed with 2 very under-engineered integral hinges and sticks out and inordinately long way so you cannot mow with 300 - 350 mm of any obstacle such a tree, sprinkler riser, bush, fence post, etc. so when you back up to avoid the obstacle ( once the reverse gear had been fixed by the dealer ) the plastic shute catches on the grass and folds under itself snapping itself off - the shute on the old model is still in place after over 700 hours use. This I'm told will be replaced under warranty, as I understand the man at the warranty office had also had his break off.

It has nice red rear reflectors and if you notice a bit of red plastic in the middle of the lawn, it is probably one of these that has fallen off. I noticed that it was not cutting the lawn evenly, but luckily on its first service they were able to determine that this was only because one of the cutting blades had been incorrectly fitted.

Probably a very good machine and cuts well with a good amount of power, but the quality control, and the poor design of the small detail is abysmal.
