Resist the temptation - heed the warnings, stay away (unless you're a mechanic) – We use the vehicle as any family would, including the regular long drive to the country. After having 4 issues with DPF early on, the whole drive-train was rebuilt (under warranty). However, issues with the DPF still remain. With a 2 year old and pregnant wife, our discovery sport decides to skip any warning lights and go straight to limp mode,… Read more
in which the only remedy is to take the vehicle to a land rover dealer to be fixed. Annoying as this is for someone in the city, as we are moving to the country, the nearest dealer is over an hour and 100km away - which makes remedying such an issues problematic. Of course, the anxiety this causes to a young family and pregnant mother is significant. Of course, Land Rover seems to think the car is working perfectly.
If you believe a working vehicle needs to be taken to a dealer every 4-6 weeks with engine issues that can only be remedied but visiting said dealer (at the owners cost of course!), then yes, the Discovery Sport is a perfect car, and I would highly recommend it.
Car's been kinda OK – So I've read the reviews below and wow - yea scathing!! So we brought a new HSE SD4 in 2015, this was the first year the car was released - we have now done around 90k in the car and it's been actually OK. Car always serviced under warranty by LR either Parramatta or in Alexandria. So the costs for servicing at the genuine locations are very… Read more
expensive the car cost from memory around 86k new. The first 3 services were free so yea these were cheap but number 4 was around 1.3k so after the warranty expired we went to a JR specalised and the price dropped to around $600.
To date the car has certainly not been trouble free, but not as bad as some below........
1> AC failed twice within first 12 months - they took a while to find the AC leak and repair it but it's been fine ever since 2> Buttons on the steering wheel - these de laminated - but lucky this happened just before the warranty expired and was also replaced for free. 3> Nav system played up after warranty expired but it was just a loose SD card that held the maps
For us that's been about it - no issues with rattles or squeaks, car drives perfectly fine. Personally I preferred my SZ Terri as the suspension was a tad softer so a more gentle ride, the Discovery is a tad harsher. Haven't done any real off-roading just a few gravel roads and these it handled fine as expected.
Had the 7 seater back row typically small but fine for kids, the engine was actually not bad, less turbo lag than the Terri and good punch. Never used start stop so can't comment on that but I guess the interior did wear a bit quicker than I expected noting major but for a prestige car you do expect it to hold up better.
They are a good looking car so I'll give them that, reliability for us has been fine - 3 stars mainly due to the cost and value proposition. I'm comfortable to state that we won't but another LR car which is a pity the car is due for replacement probably next year.
Kids are now grown up so I expect the wife now wants a sports car - so yea time to exit the SUV's and move into sports territory.
Update - so now 2024 - after doing a bit of research around 12 months ago I realised the engine in our car is the SD4 - not the newer TD4 which is renowned for failure.
Car has approx 140k on it now we have has the famous gearshift selector failed its very easy to repair brought a new unit from range rover they had it in stock. Cost $1250, literally a 15min job no screws to undo the centre console just pulls up.
I think we got lucky with the engine being the SD4. We'll probably sell it in a couple of years.
Aboslutely Love the car – Background - I ordered the car with the options I wanted ... a long wait for the car to be built and shpped ... I have had this car for almost 2.5 years ... I wasnt a Land Rover fanboy before I bought it. Why I chose this - I wanted a 4WD to go off road, My wife wanted a vehicle that can occassionally bring large things and something nice (my… Read more · 1
other car is a Sedan) and we got a puppy that was growing into a 40KG beast. I had a choice of Prado, BMW X5, Mercedes GLC, Volvo XC90, Pajero ... while some didnt have proper 4WD, some drove like a truck, some ugly, some I could not afford ... The Disco SPort ticked all the boxes
Why I love this car - I have owned 17 cars in my life so far, some cheap and nasty and some expensive luxury cars. I also am a car nut so drive a lot of new cars, test drive new models and get to drive a amazing selection of cars from a fleet of over 150 vehicles. This car has been an absolute joy to drive, does not feel like a clunky 4WD It drives like a car on road and handled Fraser island in remarkable fashion. I did get stuck in sand due to driver error but pulled out thanks to its computing ...
What annoys me - a few rattles that is in every car from factory, the Ditch Finishers (a plastic cover that covers the roof rail channel) kept coming off, navgation would get stuck occassionally ... these were all fixed under warranty and is no longer a problem. Tyres are expensive and the original 19" AT tyres dont really suit 4WD'ing, so I bought a spare set of 17" with off road tyres for when I want to go camping
Safety - Recently my automatic breaking was put to the test when a Kangaroo decided to hop in front of the car while I was driving at 60kmh. The car did an emergency stop but still hit the Kangaroo at probably 10kmh. we all survived and the car did not have any damage.
If you ask me will you buy another Land Rover again ... the answer is Yes ...
Worst car ever owned and first and last to buy – 2 gearboxes now the 4wd pump.gone at 65000 km Nothink by problem with this lemon of a car i hate it Dash rattle from day 1 still can't fix it Never again Show details
Worst company ever – These highly priced cars deliver nothing more than poor quality, and to match all the problems with the car, the customer service is even worse. These guys think they can get away with selling brand new cars with massive amounts of problems and not being accountable for the safety of the consumer. Shame on you Landrover Show details
Stylish offroader, bouncy ride (except offroad or laden) slick cornering, incredible fuel efficiency – A hot looking SUV and the signature lights are a nice touch. Ambience inside car is functional but a luxury vehicle, not really due to diesel noise level and a few interior rattles after 18,000km. The car is well finished inside and functional. Leather is good quality and the media interface is pretty to look at and has some very detailed fuel… Read more
usage info re all aspects of your driving. The tailorable selection of 6 Dash lighting choices is novel!
The fuel efficiency is simply staggering if Eco setting( auto stop start, and changes gear selection criteria, softer torque delivery off idle etc..)used and driven gently. In non peak hour in Adelaide (commuting to northern suburbs and carefully driven) is capable of 5.5L per 100km average without annoying too many other drivers. Performance is quite good, for a 1700kg plus vehicle of its type. I average overall 6.7L per 100 including much conjestion and hill climbing.
The cornering ability is simply staggering on the 19 inch diameter rims. The corner turn-in is Sports car like, despite the mass, and the steering ratio very quick and takes getting used to.
The Diesel once on the move becomes quiet and slick but has a suprising number of harmonic drones at various speeds particularly as Auto was always lugging the engine below 1500 rpm in Eco setting, the 9 gear ratios ensured 430nm of torque is readily accessible. (9th gear is only selected manually, and is perfect for the NT open road etc..how useful, not!)
The Diesel exhaust additive Adblue top up is a slow affair, messy and if done at a truck stop bowser only 99 cents per litre( capacity 13.6L, and it will not restart if you run out...beware!)warning light comes on at 4.5 litres of Adblue to go..
Had a few warning lights come on intermittently, then disappear. (Like Coolant low, (hard to check as no translucent tank and pressurised to up to 23 psi), temperature, battery, Park sensors) The ability to run power from USB ports when motor not running/ ignition not on defied me, even after reading manual three times.?
Ride is quite bouncy on most sealed roads, however luggage and passengers on board normalised ride to be classed as very good; when laden.
In short a stylish, tall, uber offroader (with a delicate 19" rim/tyre combo)and perfect for lugging kids, off roading, preferred and endorsed by royalty ( they ticked the armoured version, I am sure!) and great for negotiating slippery polo carparks!
Stick to the petrol version unless you are an economy fanatic, tow or do huge distances.
The diesel on the move is acceptable noise wise, but it is a noisy device at idle but most of the time when stopped auto stop/start has it off!
Very practical car and with a feel of luxury – I had a white HSE 180 with blackpack since July 2017. The thing we like the most is the appearance of this car - with the blackpack, it looks so outstanding. Mywife loves it. Driving is so smooth, can't feel any gear change. The handling is similar to a sedan. The noise level is surprisingly low compared to a normal diesel car. … Read more
Technologies of this car aren't to fancy but very practical - auto wiper, auto headlamp, keyless entry, and etc. It is a definitely huge upgrade from our previous Japanese car.
This car is very spacious as a 5-seater but it is quite tight if you gonna use the third row often
