Lanotec Steel-Seal
1 review
I've been using Lanotec products for well over 20 years, mainly Lanotec GP and HD in marine applications on boats, jetski's and marine trailers, as well as tractors and farm equipment here. Even used it sparingly on a few vehicles. I normally get boxes of the stuff, just to keep it on hand. But having spent $95K on a new Landcruiser, I wanted to do a better job of rust proofing the chassis and under the steel tray, than aerosol cans.
So, did research, including getting quotes from local rustproofers, and decided to just go the Steel Seal product, that's especially designed to give a more durable, longer lasting coating than the standard Lanotec products. A product I've not used before, but seemed to be a good option.
I've always found Lanotec's other products excellent, so what could possibly go wrong, huh?
Bought 10L drum of the stuff for over $200, and another $80 odd for the 8L pressure sprayer to apply it. $300 odd total. Not a cheap exercise, given a professional rustproofer was only around $700, but I thought I could get a good job with their "quality products".
What an absolute fiasco it turned out to be.
At the least, I expected to get a nice even coating which'd run into itself, creating the uniform coat to give proper, spread protection. A fairly translucent coating like Lanotec GP and HD gave, giving good even coverage
Oh no, that'd be asking waaay too much.
Instead I got a lumpy blotchy brown splattered mess everywhere, with excessive overspray from the splattery nozzle on the sprayer.
I shook the bejeezus out of the drum before use, given it initially came out like porridge, and even after several minutes shaking it was still like congealed thick gravy, lumpy and disgusting.
Stuck it in the useless applicator, and it constantly clogged up no matter what I did, wasting product left, right and centre. Would NOT spray evenly, no matter what I did, and was forced to repeatedly remove the nozzle for cleaning just to get ANY product out of it!
So, instead of the nice even coat expected, I ended up with a turd brown blotchy uneven mess that obviously is going to do squat protecting my vehicle properly, let alone whatever disaster has occurred in the chassis rails after getting it in there as best I could with an applicator that spluttered and clogged constantly.
The product was garbage, the applicator sprayer was worse, and cleanup just added to the fiasco, with the congealed crap clumping throughout the sprayer, so I ended up having to dismantle it completely and clean it over and over. Even now, the sprayer doesn't work anywhere near as effectively as my $20 Nylex sprayers from Bunnings!!! Forget the adjustable nozzle...it wouldn't even come OUT of the nozzle properly! The trigger sticks, the sprayer has no power to it regardless of tank pressure, and it's just useless, top to bottom. I have a small farm here, and go through various sprayers regularly, including Nylex and Sylvan. I had hoped to use the Lanotec sprayer later here for other purposes, but not a chance of that. It can't spray anything!
What's really disappointing is that I've loved Lanotec product till now. 20 years of repeat purchases have shown that. I hate to even calculate how much I've spent buying their stuff. Because of this, I didn't hesitate buying Steel Seal because of the good results I had with their other products, but now I have a hundred grands worth of vehicle with a disgusting brown blotchy uneven mess beneath it, which looks appalling, and I'm NOW going to have to try seeing if I can get someone to get the mess off with hot pressure blasting or the like, as there's not a hopes chance the congealed disaster is gonna shift cleanly with cold pressure washing, and it's sure not going to do the job of protecting the vehicle they stated online!
I paid $300 for this product and sprayer, and now will have to spend hundreds more to HOPEFULLY get my vehicle back to how it was before it was applied. I do NOT appreciate having to deal with this unmitigated mess on a brand new vehicle of this value. I expect a product to be fit for purpose, under the ACG, and there was NOTHING even remotely fit for purpose about what I was sold, and the sprayer they supplied!

Lanotec came to the party and replaced the product and sprayer ascwell as giving me 2x600ml Citraclean to remove tne faulty product. Not enough to do the job, but better than nothing. Have yet to tackle it as will be messy and, to be honest, worried will fail again. Prob will get a professional to remove and reapply a proper product. But to be fair, Lanotec did come to the party voluntarily. Good customer service st least. But not going to risk it a second time.
