BE SMART - OBTAIN 3 QUOTATIONS FROM INDIVIDUAL ELECTRICIANS – I have applied a 5* as I have no problems with the wall removal company nor the kitchen company. Recently I engaged a company to remove a wall in my home and another to install a kitchen. The wall removalist did an excellent job and I have no complaints. The kitchen is in progress. What I would like the public to be aware of is the following: Electricians supplied by individual companies do not provide any up front quotations. The purchaser is given an electrician and then receives the invoice from the company and not from the electrician. In my situation the wall was removed and an electrician was supplied by the company. The company then issued the invoice.

Now I am having a kitchen installed and I have another electrician supplied by the kitchen company. The original electrician (the one who removed the wall) will not complete the kitchen electrical work. Once more I am denied the opportunity to have 3 quotations for the work to be done.

More often than not companies charge any of the following:-

(1) adding 20% onto the electrical bill (2) over charging and making a profit on the electrical work. or (3) actually employing the electrician who is part of their staff.

The kitchen quote which is now written into the contract is in excess of $3,000. I asked for a breakdown of costs and was refused saying we (the company) provides an overall quote and do not supply individual costs ie how much for a power point or how much to install the oven. Note all wiring has been completed and only requires GPO's, oven, microwave and cooktop connections. An electrical quote I received this morning to do the same electrical work is under $1,000.

If, during home renovations, the home owner employed their own electrician who could attend to all electrical work at their chosen time and direction they would be far better off.
