power drive starting acting up just after the extra warranty (this is operated from the handle). All the electronics are on the handle and in the hose. Took it back to Miele at Adelaide, the power drive did work for them and didn't cut out but they weren't using it on carpet, they were just sticking the hose in the air. They told me they could only sell me a new hose for $500, they were not allowed to repair. They gave me tips how to take handle to pieces and clean out any fluff. I did find minute particles of dust, cleaned the rings, and it still doesn't work. The Miele shop suggested I buy a new Miele on special. In 2009 I used an old Miele, that would have been 15 years old, orange and brown casing, it was fantastic, no fancy electronics. In my opinion, Miele can't stand by their electronics. Their attitude is so arrogant. I am sure Miele products are good but if you are buying keep away from anything of theirs that boasts fancy electronics. I know 2 people who have had these exact machines, one was replaced under extra warranty (staff at Harvey Norman) and a friend who I recommended the machine to bought from from Miele direct, and it lasted 3 years. In all fairness, she did not know there were 2 filters that had to be changed. She left it at Miele disgusted, probably with a good electronic hose!!! They have far too many models and should stick to less complicated electronics. Most of the used S 5980 on Gumtree and eBay have issues. Normally the electronics in the hose failing. Miele have lost me.

Brushes worn out in 4 years – Had this vaccum for 4 years the power head control in handle burnt out in first 4 months and was repaired under warranty.The vaccum has now stopped working as the brushes have worn down to nothing,not good enough a vaccum of this price should not wear out in 4 years CLEANS WELL Motor brushes worn out

Don't expect it to last – My machine is just over 5 years old. In the last 12 months there have been 3 problems. Firstly it cuts out frequently (either a switch or metal contact problem in the hose). retail) it is expected that a machine to be trouble free for 10 years. I have a 28 year old Miele vacuum which still works fine and has been brought back into service. However, the replacement machine will NOT be a Miele. It does clean well (when working). Reliability is poor.

Totally frustrated, buy anything else! – Almost 12 months to the day since I first reviewed the Miele S 5980 and it has progressively gone downhill. The machine needs to run for up to 5 minutes before the turbo brushes can run and then it is more likely to stop dead than continue. Expensive, unreliable, frustrating

fiance did her back using one of the Demo models,just way to heavy.In hindsight i'm glad i never purchased a Dyson because they are just plastic that feels like it will break (now that i've seen the Miele).I'm a male that never really enjoyed vaccuming until now,but with this beauty i just can't wait to vaccum haha. We have one room in house yet to be newly carpeted and we couldn't believe our eyes after giving it a once over.It really lifted the pile and made our worn carpet look years younger. Nothing at all.
