Don’t buy – Had a leak in the roof. Whole roof had to be replaced. Company in Cairns which is now closed down did it. From other reviews there are concerns with the way this company does business would recommend researching and purchasing a van from another company. Show details
Good van for reasonable price – I started looking for a van in 2009 to replace my well used off road camper trailer, I wanted an aluminium framed van having an old 1972 ish Viscount Alumvan on the property that has stood the test of time in rain and not leaked or rotted in our sometimes high humidity and rainfall. Purchased a Millard Sunseeker in 2010 2nd hand as new due to the… Read more
original owners health sadly deteriorating and unable to travel.
As far as i could see van had never travelled far as there was not a mark on it , ie no scratching of the S/S sink and moulding knobs still on tyres.
The original owner had ordered this baseline model 17'9" model poptop with many extras, 6 inch chassis and drawbar, extended draw bar, shower/toilet, dual axles, alloy wheels, LED lighting, wired for solar, gas hotwater service, dual 9kg gas bottles and 21' LED television.
I live on a 300 acre property with 2 jump ups over floodways and due to the van being set up heightwise for a sedan I had the axles underslung by the dealer via an engineering shop before I could tow it home. This gave it a considerable clearance increase suitable for our areas. poor quality dirt roads and property.entry.
I retrofitted the standard 2' wide load sharing springs with a set of Alco 21/2 inch roller rocker springs as I believe these reduce spring breakage , this did entail replacing the front and rear spring hangers with 21/2 inch wide hangers.
Another preventative measure for particularly dirt roads was sleeving all my water pipes with black poly ag pipe , this did involve disconnecting some pipes to slide the piping over and if not removeable convoluted split tube fitted and zip tied in place. Water discharge poly piping was sleeved with a sponge type black tubing and all exposed wire harnesses sleeved with convoluted tube and attention paid to grommetting wire through chassis etc areas.
I also fitted a McHitch coupling (just brilliant)!
After travelling 35,000 km I am very happy with the van overall, much of the travel has been on outback dirt roads and a couple of very poor mining roads in N QLD, I am very concious of driving the rig to the conditions and have had no major problems!
However there are always the odd manufacturing problems and I believe that especially now with the huge increase in caravan numbers many manufacturers are struggling under their order load and some shortcuts or speeding up of assembly is occurring!
My first problem was when I refilled the watertanks at a roadhouse before heading out to the Cooper basin, I was standing holding my filler hose attached to the roadhouse tap in a parking bay and thinking H'mmm these tanks hold a fair amount of water, I'll check the guage in the van, needless to say water poured out the door onto the ground when I got around to the off side, reason Millard has elected to place a small amount of clear silastic on the fill tubes attachment to the water inlets and it had just slipped off. A days lay up to properly dry cupboard items and the van floor followed. I fitted two S/Steel hose clamps over the water pipe fittings and have never had a problem since, however 2 $3 fittings was all it would have needed to do it properly on assembly!
Luckily no real damage was done and the cabinetry and flloor did'nt suffer.
Good things, excellent chassis, quality welds, no rust, Dometic tropicalised fridge freezer works well!, no gas problems, quality stove/griller.
Excellent van to tow, well balanced and stable, with a fair towball weight, front kitchen design often places weight well to front. fitted extra spare wheel on bar without any deleterius effect.
Electric brake and wiring have been well installed and operate efficiently.
Windows seal well and operate as they should, had to replace mesh netting on one when i accidently locked the cat in the van!! easily obtained via E Pay site!
Excellent innerspring mattress with bolster extension.
Dislikes - scotchguard sticky feeling on cloth upholstery,
Foam in seating base is compacting, better quality hi-density foam could have been used.
Water guage is inaccurate and shows tanks close to empty soon after use.
CD radio was average quality, and failed quickly - easily replaced with a quality Pioneer head.
Found that there was no power connected to the trailer breakaway battery (quality Breaksafe 5000) with built in charger...if connected to 12volt!!) on the vehicle but would charge if the van was plugged into AC however we free camp alot and the solar system is 12 volt.
I have had ocasion to adjust and lubricate several drawer and door latches to prevent them opening whilst travelling
Drop step very slippery, slipped and gouged my ankle, removed it and now use a seperate stool type step.
Approx 2 years ago van was in a very very heavy hail storm and a large amount hail accumulated on the poptop roof , a day or so later after having to brush off the hail i noticed water leaking around the inside skirting, the roof had due to the weight of ice become concave rather than convex and allowing water to pool. The skylight above the shower was also smashed.
Short story , insurance company was great and the local repairer quickly got stuck in removing the poptop, however Millard were so busy it took 6 months to obtain a replacement roof and on arrival in a large flat wooden crate was found to be 1 inch longer than the original???
The cost of trucking from Sydney to Far northern NSW was considerable and the wait time to have a new one fabricated and shipped was an unknown, so the repairer (full marks to them) decided to modify my van and the insurance company agreed to have a brand new longer skirt fabricated by a local upholsterer. The replacement skirting was very high quality fabric, zips etc and fitted to the new roof like a glove, the job was done very well and we have not had a further leak.
One upside is that all the internal lighting in the roof is now better quality LEDs and the auto electrician rewired the roof with heavier wiring for the 2 200 watt solar panels fitted.
Note the roof problem was not a manufacturing one!
I believe all in all the basic structure of the van is sturdy and will last the distance.
Millard Longreach Seabreeze Riddled With Defects – Purchased a brand new supposedly off road van. Our second in the past 15 years (previous van was a sturdy Viscout Duralvan). Picked the van up in June 2015 and embarked on an outback holiday, nothing but problems as soon as we left home and even before we hit the gravel. Structural defects, external lining buckling and internal lining cracking.… Read more
Beware these vans are not what they seem, their chassis structural warranty means nothing once they take your money. Millard exclude off road use as abuse an thus not covered by their warranty even though it was sold as an off-road van, supposedly able to do all the roads we wanted to travel (nothing rough mind you). Beware, Millard lack an understanding for gas compliance and changes to the gas standards (imposed in 2014). As a result, we were not able to install an annex (also disclosed at time of purchase) - LPG gas storage in toolbox also non-compliant. Plumbing failures each time we pulled up - plastic pipes coming apart at joint and leaking. Hot water tank not connected properly flooded out van (according to Millard it was abuse - never mind someone forgot to install one of the O-rings. Beware Millard use non-water resistant lining to their showers and don't seal behind taps and plumbing. Poor workmanship throughout. Seller forced to buy van back. Would not recommend or look at another Millard. They falsely promote being the original builder +65 years - it's a lie. Overall a direct result of a poorly regulated industry preying on retirees, shoddy workmanship and practices.
Beware we hear the vendor is trying to resell, you have been warned!
It seems that some poor family has bought the van....totally unethical by the dealership and… Read more
Millard longreach Cape leaks – Millard Longreach Cape purchased new 2011. We have had leaks fixed at our own expense several times. One caravan repair company that we used recommended that we ring Millard when we were next near Sydney and discuss the design fault that caused the van to leak. When we rang Millard they did not want to know us or were not even slightly… Read more
interested in discussing the leak. They suggested that we keep clambering up on top of the van and putting more silican around the hatch. If that is the way they do business, we will take our business elsewhere
when we get it fixed and trade it on another caravan with better after sales service . In the 4 years that we have had this van we have had 2dometic fridges replaced by dometic and 2 nd truma hot water installed and needs repairs again. Please chose your van carefully, large outlay, very disheartening.
Millard long reach outback pop top – VERY disappointed. Had to get roof replaced after glue gave way. Took 3 months waiting for warranty to be okay end only to find we where number 10 in line!!!! Another 4 months for work to be completed. Leather Upholstery breaking down warranty won't replace this..no water divert fitted to shower door so water leaks into main cabin. Good looking van Falling apart VERY BAD workmanship
Here I am again. Hail damaged this time so had a good look what was behind cladding - 100%… Read more
Millard Longreach extended warranty – Bought a new 2010 Longreach and after 2.5 years shower coating crumbled & peeled off. Made by Millard using dry area panelling, not wet area lamipanel. Millard didn't want to know saying product failure even though they installed the wrong panelling (quality control, product knowledge), the fault was everyone elses. The 5 year manufacturers… Read more
warranty, for us, accounted for zilch after they have your money. After input from Ministry of Fair trading Millard agreed to pay a small portion of the repair. The panelling Co were super co-operative offering 2/3 repair costs. Solid construction Product failures, pathetic warranty.
Millard Longreach Caravan – Traded in a Roma Elegance to purchase a Millard Longreach Semi off road caravan. Dealt with [names removed] at Motorco at Cairns. Very enjoyable experience. Had caravan designed from plan and picked colours and wood. Caravan was made in Sydney and took 10 weeks to build after ordering. Aluminium chasis and gal dipped. Built in BBQ, Led lights.… Read more · 1
Only issue ordered a queen size bed but the actual size is not a queen size in shops. Have to get bed specially made as if 6.3" tall. But spoke to [name removed] who contacted Millard who have arranged a refund of $300 as it wasn't what we expected. You got to be happy with that. So good an experience my friend is getting the same van. Another mate may do the same. [name removed] was able to arrange the office girl to send some picy's of the van as it got built. Beautifull caravan and won't attract the moisture due to the humidity like others Great caravan, Millard have been around a while and I highly recommend them. Well made, plenty of LED lights inside and out, kids bunk beds are long and roomy. Table folds up. Queen size bed is not the demensions of a queen size bed in the shops.
