Best vacuum ever – Best vacuum I've ever owned. Was told, when purchased over 12 years ago the upright motor was an excellent design and its lasted forever. Cord wont retract but I live with that. Bags are an additional expense but it doesn't bother me. VERY disappointed Nilfisk have taken this model off the market. Why?  Show details

Goodbye my lover, goodbye my friend, you have been the one, you have been the one for me – Today marks the day that my little nilfisk 500 sucked for the last time. After 20 years, this piece of machinery has watched me grow, cleaned up my mess reliably, and remained the back bone of our home. Sir nilfisk 500 sucked it all from Bobby pins, to chip crumbs spilt on the carpet. The death of my nilfisk leaves not only an empty space in my cupboard, but in my heart. You are with the angels now little nilfisk.  Show details

Gutted to see it has been discontinued – The longest electrical item I have owned, 15 years later and it has just died. This has been the greatest vacuum ever and was still sucking perfectly up until it died. We have a large family of 7 and a busy household, amongst the moves it has been used on both wood, tiles and carpet and handled all without fail.  Show details

Great product at the time – I really like my Nilfisk 540. I like how the attachments are stored under the lid of the machine and I like the square design that makes it easy to store in my small hallway closet. It has worked great for many years and although I now own a better vacuum cleaner I still haven't parted with this machine. I now use it to vacuum clean the carpets in… Read more

my cars.

There are some ongoing costs of mataining this unit. First is the cost of the disposable replacement bags. I don't use it everyday so I don't go through these bags too often. The second cost is the annual replacement of the hepa filter. This filter must be replaced to ensure the machine gives good suction. These filters can be costly at about $30 each.

All in all for this vacuum cleaner was a great product for its time, but now vacuum cleaner thechnology has advanced rapidly over years and the Nilfisk 540 is no longer up there with the best.

20 years old and never a problem – Bought it in 1996 - still working flawlessly incl cord retraction. Will now buy 5 packets of bags which is sold on the net for 35 dollars in total. It is a bit noisy but very functional, powerful and efficient. We have wooden floors, 120 m2 and used to have dogs.  Show details

King Model - why has it been discontinued – This is an excellent vacuum cleaner - mine is at least 14 years old. Bought it in New Zealand and shipped it to Brisbane when we moved here. I have 2 children and 5 animals, it gets a hiding and it just never lets me down. Please don't discontinue making the bags for it, mine has a few more years left in it. My retractable cord stopped a few… Read more

years ago, but we just live with it too - note to manufacturer, please make better retractable cord mechanisms.

Great machine but if you live in SA and it stops working - goodluck – Hi, The Nilfisk King 505 was working very well. We purchased it in Sydney in 2006 but moved to Adelaide soon after. The house we have in Adelaide has a built in vacuum system so need to use the machine until we purchased a beach house in 2010. It worked great but after the grandchildren left yesterday I was vacuuming the floor and it just stopped.… Read more

I guessed it was sand and cleaned the filters (both upper and lower) but still nothing. I went to the Nilfisk website to find a service agent - and guess what ? ... the website indicates that no-one in the whole of SA services these machines ... wow.

Good solid but too expensive – I purchased this vacuum in 2001 after asking all the small appliance shops which vacuum they use. More than half said the King 540, so that is what I bought. It worked like a charm for the first 6 years and my only issue was the price of the bags, and the hepa filters. In 2008 I had to have the retractable cord replaced, cost about $65, as the… Read more

technician used a German brand retractor which was cheaper and sturdier. But around the same time, we started losing suction, despite regular maintenance.

The so called turbo head never worked, but as the vacuum was so good, I never bothered about getting it replaced.

We are now investigating new vacuum cleaners to buy. Because of the ongoing costs, and the lack of Nilfisk support, we are not thinking of a Nilfisk again. Good suction Large, cumbersome, loses suction over years.

Cumbersome, Damages walls - but reliable – My partner has had the Nilfisk King vacume cleaner since she immigrated to Australia 10 years ago, one of her first costly purchases - surprisingly it has lasted all those years with all the abuse she has thrown at it with vacumeing rental properties, family members houses, the garage and the car and by treating it with no care at all. I've… Read more ·  2

been using it quiet regularly for the last 4 years on and off and have had to self service it myself by literally pulling the ting apart and cleaning the HEPA filter located in the bottom of the vacume and bolted in. I unbolted it and cleaned it and noticed that it was that 'clogged' that it near caught fire at some stage of its life - something people should be wary of "clean or replace this filter"...

The bags are quiet a large capacity and are thick enough to get most of the dust held within them and help with dust mitigation around the house. The bags are costly to purchase from Godfrey's and are usually in a pack of 5 for about $20 - there is no after market fabric bag for this machine either. Usually after about a month - I remove the bag and tap it gently outside so that all the heavy objects within it fall to the bottom. The bag should last 6 to 8 months with regular use - from personal experience. I clean my garage and car vacume cleaner on a more regular basis - but these bags are expensive so make it last!

The unit itself is pretty strong with dints and scratches all over it and it has even managed to fall down the stairs on occasion to keep on working - the cord retraction button has finally given up the ghost after all these years so the cord remains outside of the unit. The plug is also a little finicky - possibly due to internal wiring starting to fray or crack - due to pulling the machine against the plugged in cord...

The handle and brush head are solidly built - the head has a great propensity to accumulate dust and hair within and behind the floor brush - I've had to disassemble this on a few occasions and cut all the built up hair from the floor - a messy but necessary task. The vacume worked a whole lot better and now I vacume the head while going around the house to keep it clear of blockages.

My only big gripe is that the vacume cleaner has no soft edges and dragging it around you need to be super careful about your wall edges that it makes contact with - it'll dint the walls and skirting boards if you drag it too fast into a wall.

I was quoted $60 to have it serviced by Nilfisk, with no guarantee that they could fix it, and they said that they would quote any other parts when they service it which could amount to hundreds - which wasnt worth it.

Just waiting that it'll finally die one day - and hoping that I'll win a new vacume cleaner off Product Review :) Sturdy design, has lasted 10 years easily, good suction when kept clean and obstruction free in the floor head Heavy, costly, bags cost heaps for what they are - buy online, service from Nilfisk not worth it.

Reliable – We've had our king 505 for approx 6-7yrs now and still going strong. As other reviews have noted that 'yes' it is heavy to lift but easily pulled along though. Considering that i treat most appliances roughly as my hubby says, that this vac and all accessories are still going great. Fantastic onboard tools. Although the auto retracting power cord… Read more ·  1

no-longer rewinds, its still serving as our family vac. Once the dust bag becomes 30 - 40mm full it does lose suction slightly, once the dust level comes up to near where the hose attaches, forget using the vac unless you replace the bag. The new style dust bags are polyester material, are definately an improvemnt on the older paper style ones that tore so easliy - cause I'm rough remember! Robust, reliable Bags have become costly over the years so we've probably paid the difference between this vac and say a bagless expensive brand machine

Good – Overall, I would buy another Nilfisk in an instant! We purchased this one four(4)years ago and it is still going strong. It sucks very well and is very easy to use. As i mentioned in the con's the bag compartment is a little tight/fiddly to open but I only use a handful of bags a year which I might add also doesn't break the bank too much...just… Read more ·  3

plan ahead and always have a spare as there aren't a lot of outlets that sell true Nilfisk brand bags and i don't think too much of the fake ones(gneric type)..go the origingal! With this Nilfisk King 540 series I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a great result. We did have slight problem once...going back a year ago when we decided to clean up after our tradesman who left a heap of building & sawdust for us to clean, and after using the Nilfisk to clean up the mess it overheated, and after about half an hour it was all good. We did take the filter out also, but that is back in now and works just fine! The Tools are great for use when cleaning the car, they don't get used much inside as we wet-wipe our skirtings, but Overall this vacuum cleaner is a real beauty! MODEL KING Series 540...It looks great (Silver/Black) and is very easy to pull along with soft edge protection for your skirtings etc.. It has great suction unlike the Dyson we used to own before this one, also the two speed options are great as this means I can safely vacuum soft furnishing and soft rugs without any problem at all. The bag system is great as an asthma sufferer and they have recently changed from paper bags to cloth-like soft (dust free) bags. The retractable power cord is just a bonus also after vacuuming a 36square home as you don't feel much like bending down and rolling up a cord (have to do that all the time with our poor old trusy VAX which is banished to the shed now) Price was a little high at the time, but you expect that with a brand new to the market product..and is a little noisy, but I haven't met with a vacuum cleaner yet that whispers quietly, I just don't vaccie with a headache. The Tools & Bag compartments are a little fiddly to open also

Good – A faithful machine for over 5 years and apart from having to buy special cloth bags and then throw them out, I have been quite happy with the Nilfisk King 505. My daughter purchased a more expensive model NK and she is still using hers too and happy with it. They can be a bit heavy when the bag is full and also loses a bit of suction when full. … Read more

But it has been the best cleaner I have had so far in over 45 years of purchasing vacuums. Would recommend it. My 5 year old Nilfisk King 505 has served very well. Very good suction when bag is first replaced. Crevice nozzle functional and upholstery tools used frequently. Used very often is the red velcrove material tool which removes the dog hair. Noise is acceptable and cord length reaches within most rooms. Getting older now and having to lift and transfer from room to room when the bag is full, reminds my back that the cleaner is heavy. Otherwise, very few things I would say are wrong with this machine.

Excellent – It was quite expensive at the time (I recall paying around $500 while other vaccuums were going for $200), but you really do get what you pay for. I would have another Nilfisk in a heartbeat, it hasn't ever let me down, and it's had a pretty hard workout over the past 5 years, with lots of Dog Hair amongst other things. We've got the Nilfisk King… Read more

511, bought around 5 years ago. It's really been a great machine. I have to say it - it really SUCKS - and I mean that in the best possible way Nothing, it's great
