Olympus

After researching numerous brands, decided to buy the Olympus binoculars even though it was one of the more expensive options due to the advice of the salesperson on the reliability of the brand. However, after a few years of minimal use and storing it in a cool dry cupboard, I discovered that the material used for the main body of the binoculars has degraded and now is sticky to the touch. I showed it to the Ted’s salesperson and was told it is decomposing and to contact Olympus to get it resolved.
I contacted Olympus and was told that since it was just outside the warranty period, nothing could be done. Their customer service said they would offer a VERY slight discount on another pair. This annoyed me as I did not see why I should buy another product from this brand when they refused to honour a clearly defective item of their brand…
I contacted their managing director to get his response to my situation.
After 3 emails that I know were received, there was NO response…
So, my advise to anyone considering purchasing ANY Olympus product is to Avoid at any price.
Not a clue about Australian Consumer Guarantee! – My Olympus TG6 failed after 20 months.. just stopped.. nothing worked unless I plugged it into a charger! The first response was "Sorry .. the 12 mth warranty has expired.. here is a quote for $550 to fix it!" They then told me the Consumer Guarantee did not apply....I went into "educate mode" after I cooled down. They then told me they would provide a new circuit board but I would need to pay $150 to have it installed and tested! Once more into "educate mode" but a little more direct. They then offered to repair it for free. I declined as it was a major fault and it is the consumers decision to refund repair or replace. The TG6 facebook group has some posts from other owners who have had a similar experience.. it appears most have just paid up. Now I do not know if this is simply lack of staff training or a deliberate money saving policy.. Nevertheless it certainly trashed the Olympus brand for me.. till this camera I have always used Nikons.. I will go back when this one wears out in a few years time!

Olympus TG-5 Fault – I have had my TG-5 for 3 years with no issues and I take it to a pressure of 3.4m on my dive course to find that it floods. I have contacted Olympus on numerous occasions with no acceptable outcome. They offered to analyze it for free although I would need to pay shipping costs. They have confirmed they do not water test all their tough cameras and I stated they could not confirm if this is a fault in the camera unless they have a look at it which they refuse to unless I pay to send it. They have come to an assumption that the seal was not secure as it needs to be replaced every 12 months. No one advised that this needed to be done and there was no clear indicator to replace this seal. I find it ironic that the camera broke down the first time it had the slightest pressure on it. This has been advertised to withstand 15m and could not last 3.4m. It is a shame that a company can produce products that usually are good quality but when an uncommon situation occurs they are not willing to take responsibility. At the bare minimum company-wise, they should analyze the camera for their records of faults not leave it as an assumption. I have the receipt for this product and paid $550 and expect a product of that price to last much longer than 3 years and to last to the bare minimum of the standards it has been advertised for. I spoke with Chris numerous times who was unprofessional to deal with and told me he would stop communication, when you are a representation for a company you do not get to dictate when you have finished with a customer. Which is what he did and how he treated me in the tone of words through emails was astonishing.
