Do Not Buy, if you have it, THROW IT OUT – Dangerously inaccurate. Not reliable at all. Waste of money. You would be risking a life trusting the readings from this device! I brought this device yrs ago, it yas been nothing but trouble since, with inaccurate readings and errors. Do not risk a life by using this product! Show details
Appalling – Never accurate, gives a different reading each time when used several times in a row. ALWAYS gives an underestimate of temperature. I've backed up with the old under-the-tongue thermometer and the Omron is usually around 1.5 degrees too low. Hard to use. Often gives an error reading. Back light goes off after 2 seconds so by the time it's actually… Read more
displaying the reading, you can't see it - not helpful if taking temps in the middle of the night and not wanting to turn bright lights onto a sick child.
Appalling product, please don't waste your money - this thing cost $70. Very disappointed.
Worthless product – Thermometer constantly faults, is inaccurate and is not reliable. Faulty more than it works. Useless when your child or yourself are unwell and you need a quick and accurate reading. Have to take temperatures several times to get an accurate reading but machine faults, displaying AA if the machines temperature increases by more than 5 degrees.… Read more
Think about it. Room temperature to the high temp of a sick child is going to be greater than 5 degrees every time. DO NOT buy this product.

Inaccurate - waste of money - do not buy it! – There are a few people here that have said they got accurate readings from this thing. They are the lucky ones, maybe Omron make 1 in 100 that actually work, but I got a dud one. Yes the manual is confusing, yes I read it and now understand how to use it, but yes, I still get inaccurate readings, can vary 1 or 2 degrees between subsequent readings… Read more
using the twist around in the ear for 10 seconds until it beeps twice method. Just took my temp now three times and highest I got was 35.6. I can guarantee I am not 35.6! From what I have read, 35.6 is classified as mild hypothermia, where I am quite comfortable sitting in a room that is currently 25 degrees. Took son to the doctor's recently and he recorded 40 degrees. got him home and this thing recorded 38. If it ever does give consistent readings on two or three consecutive attempts within a few minutes in the same ear, it always seems to be at least 2 degrees too low. Nothing. It has never taken an accurate reading.
An excellent choice for all the family - very easy to handle, fast, reliable – An excellent choice - very easy to handle, fast, reliable. Self test with rectal thermometer (Hg) in parallel (37 - 39 degrees C) gave very consistent values on repeated measurements. The thermometer measures absolute temperature. If you wish to convert the data to rectal temperature, add 0.4 degrees C. 5000 measurements per battery change. … Read more · 1
It amazes me that so many negative opinions have arisen around this fine product.
- Problems with reading the manual?
- Campaign aimed at increasing the sales of competing products?

Regarding the seemingly consistent negative feedback from different users. Most of them do not seem to be aware of the wide range of parameters included in a measurement and how these can affect the reading. Not just a matter of difference between the temperature at various points:
- rectally
-in the ear
-in the mouth
-in the armpit
The relationships between these temperatures will also vary depending on blood flow around the area being measured. For best results, use the family members' normal temperature, eg morning temperature, as a reference when measuring fever. Very consistent values on repeated measurements.
Good – I am very surprised at some of the bad reviews of this product. I've never had a fault with mine and believe the readings to be very accurate for children (after using the old fashioned under the arm ones as well). That said, I have not used this on a newborn, I only bought mine when my daughter was about 18 months old. I also found that this does… Read more
not work well on adults... it's a child's thermometer only. I'm very happy with my Omron and won't be buying anything else unless it does have a problem in the future. Easy to use once you read the instructions thoroughly, and accurate for toddlers. Also great for middle-of-the-night when you don't have much light in the room. Really portable with it's own case... we have taken this camping and on holidays. Can sometimes take a bit longer than expected to get a reading, and therefore you have to keep your child still for that time. You're supposed to use a clean cover with each use, but I have never bothered with that... my child's ears are clean and I've only changed the covers a few times. It comes with extra covers so I've never actually had to buy new ones.
Positive reviews
Accurate and fast – I read the other reviews and I don't seem to be having the same troubles. Been using mine for a few years now and still going strong on its original batteries. I do compare it sometimes with a oral thermometer and find it within a fraction of a degree out.
I love it – This device is very easy to use and I have used it successfully with both of my sons. I am surprised to see it getting so many bad reviews as the instructions explain very clearly how to use it. I would reccommend it highly as it gives a quick response when needed.
Good – I initially found this thermometer questionable as I was getting different readings. Thankfully this was when I was familiarising myself with the use of the thermometer in preparation for when I would actually need it. After reading and following the instructions and 'practicing' a number of times, the readings became more consistent. I found the… Read more
one-second reading setting very useful with the squirming baby. There is also a longer option where you are required to keep the probe in the child's ear for longer, this provides a more accurate and consistent reading. Protective carry case, spare probe covers, quick to measure temperature when temp is needed in a hurry. You obtain different readings within a span of minutes, although the readings differ minimally. You have to ensure you point the probe into the hollow of the ear cavity in order to ensure a near accurate reading.
Negative reviews
Useless – I have cancer so need to know when I'm over 38 degrees. Readings kept coming back ranging from 35 - 36.8 when I needed to be in hospital at 38. Real temperature was 39.2. Waste of $80 and risky for a chemo patient to trust in this thermometer brand. I tried everything to get a real reading so it wasn't user error.
Rubbish crap – Thermometer is needed at critical time, and especially when it is bought for your baby. This is the most pathetic thermometer I ever bought. Waste of money, never was reliable. Please please please don't waste your money on this crap product and in fact never buy any product of this company. I think company should be sued for making such a scam.
Waste of money – Real Temp was 40 but omron shows 38. I was relaxed then I feel there is something wrong. I bought another one. I am not going to tell you the brand other wise people will think I am brand ambassador. Well.. simple is that. Don't buy this one, it's not about the money it's all about your kids. Thanks!

Waste of money - Money making revenue stream for Omron - Terrible design – The MC-510 is a waste of money. It doesn't work. Read the instructions a number of times. It is very confusing, and behaves erratically. It is one of the worst designed product around in this field. You want something simple to use with kids when they are distressed. All Omron cares about is to make as much after sales money as they can with… Read more
their silly disposable ear pieces required to be used for this model. Omron sells them as consumables for a long term revenue stream.
Don't buy it. This is the 2nd Omron product I have thrown away. So frustrating. Never again.

Inaccurate reading – I could feel my son's temp was coming down but I had to get a gp sick note. This told me his temp was 37.5. The gp's Braun said it was 39.4. No wonder he was so sick :/ dont waste your money on this. Save up for Braun or similar.
Frustrating! – The Omron Mc-510 is a piece of rubbish! It constantly shows Errors galore, so I replace the battery but the same error message comes up, the screen doesn't light up for easy reading in the dark, chews through batteries oh and did I mention errors, errors, errors! My advice - don't waste your money!
Inaccurate expensive toy! – Don't waist your money on this thermometer. It is highly inaccurate regardless if it is used on children or on an adult. It show that I have a temp of 35.7 ( hypothermic) but actually I had a fever of 37.6 on a Braun one. What a piece of garbage!! Wouldn't recommend buying it, it is an expensive toy not a real equipment to measure body temperature.
Worst Buy Ever! – Total loss of money! Inadequate and impooto use on little babies. lazy manufacturer! Preferred to only make one button to do all the job for this device! Change C to F: use the same button to turn it on or off, or read or whatever else you want to do.. just use the same button!! This is insane!! * User unfriendly. * Expensive. * Not suitable for all ages. * STAY AWAY!!
Piece of rubbish – This is a piece of junk paid top dollar for this and does not even work keep getting error messages read instruction I'm doing it right. Put in ear and press button wait for beep. Yer we'll it beeps and just comes up with AA on the screen or a small square. Don't buy piece of junk!!!!
Useless – Completely inaccurate. Does not work on anyone, even adults. Had to buy the Braun one instead. My baby had a fever of 40 degrees and the omron only registered a temp of 37.4, this thermometer is completely useless. I regret spending so much money on it. Omron I want my money back! Useless
Absolute Rubbish – I'm sure this thermometer does give accurate readings but it takes so darn long to get the reading it's impossible with a squirming child or screaming baby. The ear probe is too large to fit my 4 month olds ear & I just keep getting error messages. I give up, going to try the new Tommee Tippee Miomee Ear & Forehead thermometer. Compact size Too hard to use
Ok – Was surprised so many ppl say it doesn't give accurate readings, I must have been lucky mine works fine. But I got given this as a gift, the ones where u just put it at their forehead are way easier. Also now I've run out of the ear piece covers so have to find out where to get more which is why I googled the product and came across these reviews! Works ok Annoying to use takes a little while to take temp, hard when baby keeps moving their head
Not recommended – I get inaccurate readings most of the time. I tried pushing it bit deeper into the ear but the same result, the reading is too low for the actual temp. Sometimes im getting 36.8 but actually the temp is over 38. I cant monitor my baby's temp so i will look for a different one soon Small Inaccurate

Inaccurate – Never gives an accurate reading. My daughter's both have fever and the device has not yet recorded over 37c for either of them. It reads at 34 c when well and my daughters are suffering fever at the moment but the device only reads at 37. An absolute waste of money. Disgusted. Costly, inaccurate, waste of time
Biggest waste of money – Every time I try to take my baby's temperature, I have to click the button repeatedly, over and over for it to work, and even then it sometimes still won't work. When it does, the only thing it does consistently is give inconsistent readings. When I have a crying unsettled baby and I'm stressed, this is so frustrating. I just know that at 2am one night I will end up smashing it against a wall.
Yep its the biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased. Why is Omron steeling money from people… Read more
Does not work, very hard to figure out – This thermometer is terrible! It took a youtube instructional video to work out how to use it! Very hard to use on kids. Not happy wish I had bought a Braun like I had intended t. Instead I trusted omron as they are a quality brand name. Maybe they should stick to making blood pressure monitors. Small, compact, well known reliable name Very hardto use, too complicated. Also very temperamental sometimes will not work for no reason
Expensive piece of equipment – Always gives a reading of 36.6 even when child's temp was over 39. A hand on the forehead is more accurate. Should have taken it straight back but thought it must have been something I was doing wrong but re-read instructions and tried everything . My cheap orman underarm one is accurate every second time but take three times longer to read than… Read more
my other cheap underarm ones and not as consistently accurate. No longer buying this brand
Not accurate and expwnsive
omron mc 510 – I like many others spent lots of money thinking I was getting quality. My son is booked to have surgery in 10 days so sick boy. Just took sons temp as thought he was hot but only 36.5 then took my temp and I am 34.7 so it seems to be quite low do I just add 2 degrees to sons results. I also was advised to purchase a pack of 50 covers so now I cant return as used but items and have to purchase another. Inaccurate, expensive
Waste of money – Does not return an accurate reading and half the time it doesn't work! Not a great product for testing the temp of a squirmy toddler. Ow ill stick to an underarm thermometer from now on! At least that works and gives an accurate reading. I wish I could return this.
Not happy Jan – As a mother of a 2 year old with Leukemia... it is very important for us to monitor our sons temperature... On many occasions it has returned a "normal" temperature reading... 36-37... and my sons temperature was more like 39-40 ... i am very unhappy with the product since i forked out alot of money for a "decent" temp guage only to have it give… Read more
normal readings on a febrile child.. had i not stuck to my gut instinct and rushed him to hospital... he would more then likely be dead by now... Not Happy and want a refund!!! will be making a formal complaint!! Do Not Waste Your Money!!
wrong readings.... half time doesn't switch on
Appalling – One of the worst pieces of "technology" we've ever attempted to use. Seriously, try getting a sick child to sit still while you make repeated attempts to stick something in their ear simply because it doesn't work. Gave readings between 36.9 - 37.4 when temp was actually 38.4 using old style stick thermometer. Not worth the utter frustration. sounded good on the box innacurate, unreliable, difficult to use, ongiong costs for covers.
Quick & Easy...but temperamental – A modern and high tech version of the old under the tongue thermometer. Can be quite quick and easy but has a tendency to malfunction quite often leaving your baby frustrated. Lets face it how long can you keep your toddler still for. When it works..great..but in summary...temperamental. Easy to view screen, seems to be accurate. Easy to read , one button usage Very temperamental
It does not work! – I am glad I didn't purchase this.it was a gift. My husband and I had many a tense argument as to how To work this in the middle of the night with a sick child. A thermometer for a kid needs to work intuitively and fast and with accuracy. This one ticks none of these boxes This does not work efficiently. I always refer back to the manual and get even more frustrated!
i am looking for manual right now. It is useless.
Slow & inaccurate – As other reviews mention it takes way too long to take a reading & I never trust it to be accurate. Can vary by a few degrees if you take consecutive readings. Often dislikes the temperature of the room you are in & you have to wait a few minutes before it functions. Often quicker & more accurate (& more tolerated by my child) to use my much cheaper underarm one. Will be shopping for a better one. Slow, inconsistent, not worth the money
Don't buy it! – Ours worked once, then got stuck on farenheit and won't work. Not the greatest when you need one in the middle of the night with a sick newborn UNIMPRESSED - It seems to be stuck on and isn't working at all. I've only ever used it the once and it didn't work :( - didn't work
What a hung of junk – Have had it for about a year. Not used all that often. now is stuck on Fahrenheit. ok if you live in the states but no good in Australia... Won't let me change it back to centigrade and is a pain in the [censored word removed] to work out at 3am with a sick kid. Not Happy !!! Anyone in the states want a thermometer ???? Would be great if it worked properly Everything.
Don't get rid of it! It's a simple fix... press and hold the top button for 3 seconds until the F… Read more (+1 reply)
