Surprised - and very happy! – We had an enormous heap of clippings (at least 8m x 8m x 2m - yes!) which was largely banksia rose (old & allowed to run wild), spiky ornamental quince & old tea tree). Faced with hefty quotes to have it taken away, we chose to buy a mulcher from Bunnings - Ozito Silent Shredder $279 - a good bit less than the best take-away quote. We were simply… Read more

amazed at its capacity to chew through this enormous heap. It took 2 of us about 6 hours but the machine never failed - if it fitted into the feeder slot, it was shredded! The overall reduction in volume was just enormous - in fact hard to believe. The older more woody material produced an attractive chipped mulch, the greener banksia rose produced "stringy" mulch but totally acceptable in less visible parts of our (native) garden. The self-feeding was amazing, the shredder effortlessly pulling in multi-branched material without flinching. A great machine! Handled everything with minimum "preparation" - just make sure nothing greater than 40mm by cutting off the really thick bits. Acceptably quiet. The mulch from green soft material is stringy and "bruised" and not too attractive but the volume reduction was great

Ozito not so silent shredder! – Have just finished overhauling a second hand example which had completely frozen from sitting for a few months without being used. I am intrigued by the operation of this gadget and have to be impressed by its ability to mash/chop up some types of foliage without too much fuss and certainly with less noise than the 94dBa written on one of the… Read more

info stickers on its cowling; or my 2400W blower unit. Works great on bottle brush stems but useless on other softer fleshy branches.

While the planetary gearbox seems pretty sturdy, the heavy steel rotary cutter head running directly into the aluminium alloy housing does not impress me. Likewise the lightness of the main gearbox housing makes it pretty impossible to press out the final drive bush/bearing for maintenance purposes. My advice would be to anyone wanting a long life out of their Ozito to pull the end housing off at least once a season and make sure the cutter head ends are well packed with grease and the heavy rubber o rings are in tact. A pretty simple operation for a DIYer. Impressive action on some foliage eg: bottle brush branches. Not too noisy. Not designed for long life - maintenance. Useless on a lot of softer branch/foliage

I can't live without my Silent Shredder – I only required my Silent Shredder to help with a garden makeover with the expectation that it would fail toward the end and be thrown out as I have already broken two of the noisy, spinning blade mulchers. How wrong I was. It has been working brilliantly for over 4 years now and I shred absolutely everything. My mates have even started calling me… Read more

Captain Shredder.

Not only is it nice and quiet, but the auto feed is awesome. Gets a little awkward if shredding soft plants as they tend to clog the cutting gear, but I just mix soft/wet plants with drier material when feeding. It is a good idea to keep a stick to poke through any clogged material, but it is rare if you feed correctly. The unit will auto-rotate if it gets stuck on something too big and it is a great feature.

Found the exit chute a little low, but I just use a large plant pot underneath and offload to a nearby wheelbarrow. Although the feed chute is a little small for feeding leaves, etc this unit is not really designed for that so I just chuck the small stuff straight in the compost with the shredded material.

I went a bit hardcore on it forcing (quite hard) through some large, dry hardwood branches and it broke the aluminium plate that adjusts the cutter. I was going to throw it out but thought to check online to see if I could get the part to fix it myself.

Ozito customer service was great and they promptly sent me an exploded diagram so I could order the part with the correct part number within the hour. The item was delivered to my nominated Bunning store and I was shredding again within a week.

I love my shredder and would highly recommend. Just takes a little getting used initially to as the feeding may require a knack, but once you “get it” it’s awesome! Silent autofeed and robust and great support Exit chute is a little low.

Great machine – I have the older model, I think it may be their first one, and after 10 years of shredding palm fronds and some heavier wood I broke the cutter plate. Of course you can not buy a new one for this model. I pulled it to pieces which is very easy to do and had the plate welded up. Its now back in commission. Ozito told me that cutter plates are… Read more

available for the next models after mine so give them a ring. I have no idea of the cost for one.

I think it is a great machine. I don't use it for the mulch so much but more to reduce the volume, I don't think palm fronds make good mulch but a lot of the other stuff is good.

Very happy with shredder – I have had my shredder for six years and it has been used lots with all different types of branches. Has worked perfectly for me. I have now broken the screw in blade and need to find a new one. I would recommend this shredder, I think when it last six years it deserves a great rating :-)

Ozito shredder – I bought my Ozito shredder after reading shredder reviews on line. I bought mine second hand from a landscape gardener. Working within its limitations I found it excellent. I am now the proud owner of Ozito shredder, trimmer, pole trimmer and power saw. Working within limitations I have found them to be good value.

Didn't Work – Plugged it in turned it on and then inserted smallish branches about 1cm thick, then it just stopped and would not turn back on! Tried to reset , checked for blockages, none, so I guess it had a heart attack when it realised it had to perform? Poor quality product took it back for a refund. I do not recommend this shredder.

disappointing – I bought this yesterday and thought that given that the positive reviews outweighed the negative that this would probably be a good solution to all the old palm fronds that have been building up in my yard. Keep the power extension lead short – I'm just about to purchase one. I've talked extensively to the Bunnings specialist in the area. He has had his for 10 years. I live on a large block - 1 acre, and used to have a big heavy duty mulcher too heavy to manage always needing a service and two flights of stairs to the carport. The salesman advised me NOT to purchase the Ozito if I… Read more

needed a very long extension cord as there would be too much power loss. Reading the reviews it seems as if the people who had problems were using 'power boards' etc. So, I'll keep it close to the house and bring the wood & stuff to it. Will update if all goes awry. I'm rating 4 even though I haven't used it yet and will update quick smart if it's bad. Two Months later and still love it. Using a 25 metre extension lead but not on a power board and works fine.

Chops Up – Objective: Feed the garden, reduce green waste for a small back yard Update at the bottom Early days yet, so I may come back and change this review, but the early signs are good. Seems to have no problem with what I have thrown at it thus far, reasonably safe. I have chopped up pine boards, old garden stakes, wisteria, and some greenish… Read more

Yukka leaves (some just went straight through, so might need to adjust the settings as per the instructions).

Think I would appreciate a slightly finer chop that one might get from a fast rotating blade of a lawn mower, but I can put it through twice.

Right now I would say don't buy the expensive Bosch job if this is your first time, and just want to see where using this fits into your garden routine. There are cheaper, but I really appreciate the self feed which don't seem to be available on the cheaper ones. The reviews I have read seem to indicate that people are happy with this one as does the palm leaves.

This 3 start rating may change as we approach summer, and I reckon it will be for higher ratings.

Still yet to test some palm leaves and slightly greener stuff.

Overall it is addictive and now I am starting to look for anything at all that I can shred.

Update 5/11/2015:

Haven't used it that much, but it is still going and no issues.

I may have pushed it a bit with some of the huge branches, that arguably shouldn't have gone in.

Palm leaves got a pretty good result, and I only have to put the green stuff through twice occasionally for the more fibrous stuff.

Upgrading the rating to 4 starts from 3

Update 08/08/2016:

Still going strong. Still don't use it that much and still stuffing things in that are too big which ,by the way, trips the safety buttons on the wall adapter, and occasionally on the unit itself.

rating stays at 4 stars Easy to roll around the house, seems pretty safe, price and quality are at good levels Could have a slighlty finer chop

Great mulcher for the garden – I have had this mulcher for 7 years and used it almost on a weekly basis. It will mulch branches up to 40mm in diameter without any hesitation. The automatic feed is great as it speeds up the process. I get a lot of Golden Palm fronds and it makes a better job of mulching them if they are allowed to dry out a little first. Another trick is to… Read more

The only negatives are:

1. it is heavy and a bit awkward to move

2. the on/off switches are at the back and could be difficult to reach in an emergency

Great and love using it – The ozito shredder just keeps going. Have had it for couple years now and no problems. I'm shredding newspaper as well now for my chickens to nest in. Absolutely brilliant! – This Ozito Silent Shredder is perfect for my garden. Very quiet machine which shredded my large palm fronds with absolute ease. I clipped hibiscus and mock orange branches and fed them through whilst still green and was absolutely amazed how they shredded immediately. I am so excited and my only regret is not buying this shredder sooner.I now will have lots of mulch whenever I need. 10 out of 10. Quiet and cuts green waste with ease

Great for Bigger branches – As others have reported, the stuff that comes out of this is pretty coarse and stringy. Needs careful adjusting of the blade to get it is cut nicely - otherwise you end up with the "stringy mess" others have reported. Seems to be about the same noise level as a vacuum cleaner. Pricing Coarse mulch

Not fine enough – Got this as a replacement for my old shredder which broke (when a shredder makes metal grinding noises you should turn it off) Its not silent so don't try to use it without ear muffs or early in the morning. It does feed straight branches automatically which is an improvement over my previous shredder. However it does not shred as fine as there will be twigs that are 5+ inches long. Other than that works well to clean up garden waste.

Surprisingly good! – We were surprised at how well this shredder worked as we were not expecting very much! and pull the jammed leaves etc out from the bottom. The only thing that is doesn't seem to mulch is leaf matter. The palm fronds are mulched as much as possible but you still get some long "leaves" that go straight through. All in all we feel this has been a great purchase! Mulched palm fronds like it said it would! Leaf matter wasn't mulched very well and the output tube gets blocked up (but easily cleared)

Chews up palm fronds like a dream – I just bought this today hoping to make a dent a giant pile of palm fronds, not really expecting that it would handle the big ends. Wrong! This beauty ate golden cane, carpentaria, foxtail and fishtail fronds and even the stupid berry branches. It took just a couple of hours to turn Everest into nice neat mulch. Useful machine – I bought this about 12 months ago to get rid of a bougainvillea bush. I have just used it for 4 hours doing golden cane palm fronds. Reversing direction wouldn't free the jammed material. I had… Read more

to back the cutter adjustment right off and then when cleared, readjust it. The shredder doesn't make pretty mulch, but it turns a big volume of vegetation into a small volume. It does a good job for an electric shredder. The only downside was the outlet chute clogs up and has to be continually cleared (after turning the machine off). Reasonable shredding ability for the price. Very quiet compared to petrol alternatives. Outlet chute needs redesigning. Clogs quite often with green bouganvillea and dead dry palm fronds.

Great product for the price – I got the ozito shredder initially to chip up some small trees and shrubs we were removing. lucky to last the day as the casing looked roughly put together and a chip of plastic fell out of it. However, this shredder has proven to be a real workhorse and great value for money.

It really is quiet compared to our old 'spinning disk' type. The internal 'cog' spins at 40 rpm or thereabouts and makes a pleasing 'crunch crunch crunch' as it mulches. Adjusting the shredder correctly is vital for a good result. Once that's done, you'll get a fantastic coarse mulch. I use ours directly onto garden beds but you could easily catch and compost it also. Bottom line is, if it will fit through the top slot (about 4cm) then the blade will pull it in and mulch it. Dry sticks mulch easily, and today I just chewed up a large green tangled vine without jams, and chopped up some small palm fronds without issue.

I've also been known to stuff it full of green leaves and other very soft material, and if I overload it I sometimes need to use a flat hard stick to help the blade 'catch' the material and pull it through, as it doesn't come with a dedicated plastic 'plunger' as some of the other brands do.

I am so glad I bought this machine instead of the expensive 'brand name' ones I was looking at. I've mulched much more than I though I would as it is a joy to use and so fast! Price, portablility, noise level, ease of opperation, reliablitity No plastic plunger, could have better quaility support legs.

Great shredder – I bought a silent shredder second hand on the weekend and I'm in love with it. Understand that it does not do fine mulch: if you want to make compost out of branches look elsewhere. shredded. I found putting it through a second time helped. Reduced three piles of branches to a neat pile of mulch without any clogging or problems of any kind. Quiet, I had no need for ear protection and could have a conversation with someone next to me while it shredded if I talked loudly (no shouting needed). Very happy. Only complaint is outlet is not very far off ground so small soft material piles up and gets caught underneath, constantly had to bend down to remove. But for harder stuff like branches that isn't an issue and I found it a small concern. I do recommend doing the initial blade adjustment suggested in the manual, the adjustment was easy. Quiet, no dust, hassle free. Softer material not shredded, gets caught in outlet and has to be cleared or backs up.

these and then throw the mulch back in your yard. I love it. It made my life a whole lot easier.

I used to have piles of tree limbs all over the place after tending to our yard. I would spend countless hours cutting the branches into small pieces so they fit inside our green waste bin. It would take weeks before the mess is cleaned up. These days it takes me one day to trim our trees and get rid of the waste! Solid construction, easy to move around If shredding branches larger than 30cm in diameter, it gets jammed.

Good – For a cheap lightweight mulcher it does very well. I think the cutter would do better with spiral teeth (it has cheaper straight teeth) but provided you let your cuttings and branches dry out for a week it will mulch them very well. jam your fingers in the opening, though, it is powerful enough to injure you. Recommended. Is not excessively noisy, as advertised, and the cutter is geared down to a slow speed, which gives it greater torque. A good price too, I felt. Green branches have to be put through twice as they do not chip into separate pieces. Dry branches go through much better.

Nice product - recommended. An expensive shredder that does the job. Quiet and efficient. Easy to adjust. Doesn't shred green or fibrous material all that well -- but not even disc shredders do that. time I went to use the shredder it would not start, so assuming the warranty would be useless I pulled it apart and found a serious design fault just waiting to happen. The 3mm rod bolts that fix the motor head to the gearbox assembly had stripped from the housing due to the jolt when hitting the floor, they were on threaded 3 or 4 mm into the housing! Unfixable.

So beware - do not let your shredder overbalance on the wheels or Goodbye shredder.

I am so impressed with the unit though and enjoyed using it so much I will be buying another one.

BTW it is impossible to disassemble the unit without speciatist tools, there is a security screw with a special keyed head that you will not be able to undo in the side and all the screws in the top yellow part are tri-blade heads - good luck finding a screwdriver for them.

$80 more, both 2400W and decided on the Ozito again. This new model is smaller and a bit lighter. I'm really happy with it. It does do palm fronds, but some of the tough ones need to be folded over and put through a second time. I learned from having the first one to cut the long fronds such as Cuban Royals into shorter pieces first and it works well with this one, as otherwise the longer pieces can just wrap around and jam up the cutting discs. A bit of practice and you'll soon know what works and what doesn't. Quiet, clean, produces mulch that doesn't blow around. Good price. Makes a nice mulch to add to a compost tumbler as it doesn't pack down. The mulch is not pretty and some of it comes out chunky. Some palm fronds need to be folded or doubled and put through a second time. Needs to be carefully moving it around as it gets off balance easily.

get rid of a ute full of branches. Not having a ute I revisited the shredder option. Upon reading the excellent rating on productreview.com.au I bought the Ozito 2400 Silent Shredder.

I've now use the Ozito for the last 2 hours and it has really impressed me. As it runs at very low rpm it is quite quiet. The Ozito uses a sort of cog system to shred the branches. It's sort of like two cogs turning together and from above inserting the branches between the cogs. It's very efficient and the cog system pulls the branches into it. The output of the Ozito is very rough chips, not shredding as such. It says the maximum diameter of branch it can handle is 4cm and I'd agree with that. I've found that the opening at the top is, let's say calibrated, so that if the branch does fit in then you've a decent chance that it will be handled by the machine. If it does jam then stop it and then turn the switch so that it goes in reverse.

I've found that it doesn't like too many of the smaller twigs and leaves that you find at a branch, which can jam it up.

I'm really happy with the Ozito and I'd highly recommend it. Of course, don't expect the output of it to look like the wood chip that you'd buy at the garden suppliers. Efficient and quiet. Not much so far

It isn't that great with loads of mostly foliage, other units with flail blades are much better, but if you add wood as you go it handles it adequately.

It is not recommemded for flax as it winds on the cog.

Its major weakness is when adjusting the cutting cog you can easily bust the gearbox, so read the instructions!

Pretty cool machine! – Ok. Basically, this machine is a (picture this) big, slow starter motor. The crushing part is a large pinion wheel, or star shaped 'cog' with not sharp but blunt, tough edges. The tough edges turn one way, pulling the material inside (self feeding) which gets scraped along a flat piece of metal. Thats all it is. I like the look of it, really cool!… Read more ·  7

The motor seems tough and (I've only had it today..) it never reverse fed once. I shoved all sorts of palm fronts, large carpenteria mainly and this thing shreds them. It chips dry fronds and sticks really well, wetter woods or fronds just flatten out and don't crush as well so dry timber is a must, unless you don't mind it in much larger chunks of course. It even takes the large ends (part that hangs off the palm tree) well. Although you must snip these ends off and squash them to get the ends into the machine for it to take. I didn't think the machine was going to be able to take these but it does!

Only one day in and some really heavy stuff experimented on, the pinion wheel hasn't suffered ANY nicks or damage, so I know it should last a long time and I don't think you'd ever need to remove and attempt to sharpen. You'd replace it if anything. It's made in a way that you'd have trouble grinding it right down from overtightening (if you have heaps of metal shavings coming out the chute you're gone a bit too far, but even so it would take lots of doing this to ruin the wheel) I live on 2.5 acres, loads of palms and shrub material, it does the fronds quite well as long as they're dry enough I'd like a faster version but in reality, this would only be dangerous. To get a feeling of how long mulching might take, its around 2 minutes per palm frond, including moving the mulch in the bag so the unit doesn't clog up, ideally you'd use it higher up on something with ample drop room so no need to worry about it overfilling.
