Pet Barn were excellent. I’ve insured all 3 dogs with them since birth and when my dog had a life threatening injury they gave pre-approval at the time he was admitted to hospital which allowed me to make an informed decision at the time. As it turned out they paid more than my entitlements under my policy but they honoured it anyway. When dealing… Read more

with a very sick animal it was very comforting to know they honoured their promise and there was no additional cost to me - this is a high integrity company. Highly recommend

They are scammers beware – They’re running a scam here. I called twice about changing the level of cover and every time they told me that I need to call back because they somehow can’t change it at that particular time. Now I need to call back a third time between 2-3 weeks before my policy renews. The customer service rep just kept repeating the words renewal and told me… Read more

that the renewal will take place next month so I need to call back. Absolute scammers. Was also on hold for 30mins.

Petbarn Insurance – Hi all randomly posting here to raise awareness. Attention to all considering signing up with Petbarn Insurance or investing in their top-tier cover, Petbarn’s Total cover, touted as the highest level of coverage with extensive accidental injury and illness cover. It's imperative to be vigilant, as this coverage falls short of its promises.… Read more

Despite the enticing description, the reality is far from satisfactory. The policy's claim schedule, which they refer to, offers limited coverage with limited gap cover, leaving pet owners with significant out-of-pocket expenses.

A firsthand example: after being loyal customers and faithfully paying over $200 per month for the last four years, our dog required surgery after swallowing a skewer. Despite expecting comprehensive coverage, we were shocked when Petbarn Insurance covered only a fraction of the $12,000 hospital bill, leaving us responsible for the majority of the cost. It's worth mentioning that the hospital staff were equally shocked. Initially, they covered only $1200. After countless hours on the phone, pleading for additional coverage to save our beloved pet, they begrudgingly offered a mere $2500, leaving us to cover nearly $10,000 ourselves. Beware of false promises and thoroughly review policies before making any commitments.

As a result, we have decided to promptly switch our pet insurance.

Not worth the premium – Paid around $1600+ over the past few years to them, every time I make a claim it will be either declined because of some exclusion clause or the reimbursement is so marginal it becomes obsolete, all that for basic treatments when my cat is sick. Total of $2500 in expenses ($1600 in premiums & $900+ vet fees) with $220 reimbursement. What a joke. Show details

Petbarn was good until they raised their premiums by more than 23%! – I've been with Petbarn since 2018, since then my premium has increased significantly despite making very little claims. This year alone they want to increase my premium by a staggering $200+, making it a 23% increase. I understand that my pet is one year older and inflation will affect the price, but inflation is nowhere near 23%! Unfortunately… Read more

because of this I have decided to cancel my policy as it makes more sense to set aside money and cover any vet bills myself as they are usually less than $200, rather than paying for pet insurance AND excess on top!

Very happy – This is my first insurance claim. My cat needed surgery for a fractured leg & amputation. The vet proceesed everything with the insurer. I waited approx 20 - 30 minutes to be approved with no hassles what so ever. I also had minimal out of pocket expenses which I am truly grateful for. I am very happy with Pet Barn & yeah I will be telling all my friends / family to choose them. The vet even said to stick with them. Show details

Poor communication and poor customer care – Poor communication by customer service. I called to cancel the policy last November (2021) and they offered me a waiver for three months before cancelling and I accepted. They have charged me for the next consecutive three months after the waiver and when I called to inquire they said I was meant to call again and cancel again at the end of three… Read more

months. Which I wasn't told the first time. They refused to refund. When I tried to explain this all I got was "I understand but *repeat the same thing over and over*. Very disappointing.

Disappointing – I've had a policy for almost 2 years but have never been able to make a claim and they often ignore my contact. I started finally being able to process my first claim a month ago but they ask for additional documents which I reply to and they pretend they never receive and so the circle goes round and round. Tried calling the hotline but the… Read more

system hangs up on me before I can reach a human. I've asked asked cancel the policy several times if they won't help me me claims, but they won't cancel the policy either. Next stop ombudsman I guess. Disgusting experience. Bunch of crooks.

DO NOT USE!!! THEIVING MONGRELS – We signed up to Pet BArn Pet Insurance 12 months ago for our 2 dogs. We have now received the renewal and it is a staggering $750 per year extra. After calling them, I was advised that this was due to receiving 2 months free last year which is fine, however was advised that the policies have also been increased by 19% each. 19%???? and they… Read more

tell me that 'This increase is within the increase limits'. CPI is only 2.5% and rest assured, my income doesn't increase anywhere near that amount.

I don't know how people can afford to continue paying pet insurance if they are increasing their fees by almost 20% every year.

Stay away from these thieving mongrels as their prices seem fair and reasonable when you sign up, but look out for those nasty renewals.

So thank you Pet Barn insurance, you have just signed our pets death warrants because your policies are no longer affordable and our hip pockets are not lined with gold!!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

Stay away - Awful customer service and do not pay claims – We lodged a simple claim which took 1 month and 3 follow up calls to get resolved after I've paid premiums for 2 years without a single claim - I was repetitively told that the vet hadn't sent through the details when they had. They use an international call centre who has no idea what they are talking about. My claim wasn't paid as they split out… Read more

Very pleased – I just wanted to leave positive feedback regarding our Petbarn pet insurance. After my dog needed intensive veterinary care I'm so relieved that Petbarn actually did what our policy said they would do. When signing up for pet insurance you never know if it is going to be legitimate or if you're going to get stooged. I'm so relieved to say that… Read more

claiming was a straightforward and smooth process and the response from Petbarn was really quick. This helped to alleviate some of the stress that arises when a pet is unwell. Thus I highly recommend Petbarn pet insurance based on our positive experiences.

Best Customer service experience from the manager Sue in Caringbah – Today I phoned the store to get some advise on my puppy and Sue was amazing. She spent time to explain about different foods to suit my puppy and had great product knowledge. Thank you so much Sue for your advise. I highly recommend Petbarn in Caringbah.

Don't pay out – Company make it impossible to make a claim so don't waste your money on the policy. Demand all sorts of difficult to obtain documents to make a simple claim in the hope that you will give up on the claim.

Petbarn Insurance or Nothing? – During the last week, I insured my dog, a Persian Tazi, with Petbarn Insurance. The main reason for this was that I followed Petbarn as I am a customer and purchase pet supplies in the shops at Petbarn. I also had another dog insured with them as to their promotion. Buying insurance with Petbarn for my new dog I was offered a $50 credit that… Read more

could be used at Petbarn shops. I agreed to the policy. However, when I purchased this week items in the Petbarn shop at Woden in the ACT I was told that there was no credit of $50 raised on my account. The friendly manager offered to ring the insurance branch of Petbarn up but could not get through. Two days later I received an email from Petbarn insurance telling me that the offer of $50 was never made. Making some research about Petbarn insurance I found out that Petbarn uses Hollard insurance as their underwriter and I remembered some years ago, I had a terrible run in with the company when it came to a claim. If I had known that Hollard is the underwriter I would never have insured my dog with Petbarn or any other company using Hollard as an underwriter.

It is a common task that nowadays companies record all telephone calls between their employees and their customers to keep this apparently on file for ‘training’ purposes. It is arguable if this is genuine as most companies sell personal data to third parties and you later receive unsolicited emails or phone calls from all sorts of companies and con-artists wanting to sell something. When I answered the email it happened that the email was rejected as ‘restricted’ by the server of Petbarn. A similar action happened when I tried to ring the company on their official phone number. This is the second time this happened to me as I had an enquiry some days before with a previous insurance enquiry. This is rather dubious.

I suggest that anyone wanting to ensure their pets with any company like Petbarn should firstly find out who their underwriter is and then be sure to make enquiries about the underwriter. Often, it is possible to have an insurance for your pets with the company that insures your house or car. You may even get a better deal with your existing insurer. Insurance is a rather dicey business and in many cases, you pay for large advertising campaigns on TV, Radio, or the Internet. For sure, you pay for all these unnecessary overheads, insurance companies are not welfare organisations regardless if they are the RSPCA pet insurance or any other organisation. Maybe, it would be better for the RSPCA to keep animals alive than spending large sums of money on TV, Radio, and Internet advertisements as apparently there is not enough money for food and space for animals and they get often euthanised. Think twice before you sign up for an animal insurance policy and please shop around and at least listen to your vet.
