my pump does nothing but leak! – Super dissatisfied as my pump leaks from the bottle to the breast part. I lose about 3 oz by pumping. I tried to put it together when hot and soapy, I’ve tried placing put straight while pumping. I’ve done it all. Show details

Works great! But – This is the first pump that I purchased. Unfortunately I started with very low supply of breast milk and my nipples are flat. When I tried using the pump the first time around, it didn't suction and i felt like it was a useless purchase. I eventually learned how to develop my milk supply. I also brought the medela pisa as my main pump at home.… Read more

Yes I use that at home because it takes a while for me to set it up at work.

I now use the avent comfort manual pump at work because it is much more handy to use. No hassle of setting it up. I am a nurse and most of the time i have to keep moving around. No time to set up an elctronic pump. I can pump 2x for 10-20 mins in an 8-hour shift. That way my breasts can get enough stimulation. Sometimes i can also pump 3-4x because it's very portable and easy to bring with me. It's a grab and go pump. It was not easy to use at first but you have to learn how to use it and develop a relationship with it to use it successfully. In a shift i can pump at most 10-12ozs.

My only complaint is that sometimes the bottle becomes lose. It does not screw tightly with the pump and handle and it becomes frustrating trying to hold and pump making sure the bottle does not fall off while pumping. Sometimes it seals on tight, sometimes it's lose. Plus, you really have to transfer the milk after pumping because it leaks on the sides of the bottle if it topples or is placed/kept unbalanced with the milk still in it. Lastly, the cover around the breast shield also keeps falling off, making it difficult to keep the pump clean and uncontaminated.

I rate this product as 3 because it does work well once you learn how to use it. I just wish the bottle and the cover would not fall off and the milk would not leak.

  Manual

Recommended by midwife – I was given this manual pump second hand by a friend when I had my daughter 2 years ago. Unfortunately she didn't take bottles at all, so I only ever used it in bath to relieve pressure from my breasts in a bath, without bottle attached. This time after my son was born, I desperately needed to use the pump. He became jaundiced on day 3 and… Read more

progressively got worse before my milk came in on day 5, by then he wasn't staying awake to breastfeed long enough that I needed to top him up with pumped milk from a bottle. He kept spewing up formula, but I just could not pump more than 3ml even with new rubber parts. Also, milk kept getting trapped between plastic suction cup and massage cushion instead of being collected in a bottle. Then, my community midwife who came over to check us told me that it is a very good pump, the only manual pump she recommends to buy, but needs some adjustment. First, she removed massage cushion, suction works much better without it. Then, rubber diaphragm needed to be pushed down firmly when it lost suction as it tends to slip up if pumping too fast. Also, adaptor ring on bottle had to be taken off before screwing the pump, which I didn't know/forgot about. After that, voila! I managed to pump required 20ml by pumping twice from both sides 5 minutes at times! I don't need to use it for now as we're in hospital for further treatment and I can use electric pump here, but it's assuring to know that it works well when I need to use it again. For those mums who are unhappy that product is not working properly, I can feel your frustration, I wanted to throw my pump out of the window when desperately trying to pump the whole night, but I recommend asking midwives or someone who know how to use the product properly to save your money and anger :)

Can't live without it! – I love my manual pump. Even though I own a medela swing electric pump, I only use my avent manual. I had problems with my infant latching, so from birth until now (3 months) I use this pump for all my expressing (the most was 8 times a day, everyday!). I find that the manual pump expresses a lot more milk than electric. Its reliable and never… Read more ·  1

fails (unlike my electric which got milk in the tube!).

It's quiet and best of all, its fast!!! (fifteen minutes to drain both breasts!) as I have total control of how fast (frequent) it sucks. Although it can be tiring, I think of it as a mini workout!

One hug advantage, is that you can use it in the shower to unblock a blocked duct (every breastfeeding mother's worry!).

Great for traveling as you don't need to worry about international power point converters....or even powerpoints! You can use it anywhere! (in the car, at a park, beach etc).

It is the best thing I've bought since giving birth. Every breastfeeding mum should have one!

I know other reviews have mentioned that it leaks, I don't get that often (only if i lean back too much) though I have small breasts, so maybe cup size matters?!?!

Cleaning is best with a narrow sponge tipped bottle cleaner. I tried cleaning it with a brush and it doesn't get into the tight places. Quiet, comfortable "petal" cushion, strong suction, can be used in the shower to unblock blocked ducts, fast, cheap, reliable, portable. Can be difficult to clean without a small sponge tipped bottle cleaner, lots of parts to assemble, can be tiring to operate

Easy to use when you get used to it – I have purchased this pump again for my second baby. I lent my first one to a friend and she must have liked it so much that never returned it. It is easy to use and efficient once you get used to it and the whole idea of pumping. Milk does not spill and I can pump 120 ml in under 5 minutes. I would recommend it to a friend  Show reply

3rd baby and still pumping!!! – This bad boy right here has been used like crazy! I love it!!! Now 3rd baby in, its had a run for almost 5 years and not failed. Easy connection and pull apart every single component for washing/sterilizing. Adaptors for bottles even when bottle models have changed have been able to get new attachment for the pump. Not the best – Found it was hard to use, when you do get it attached the suction can sometimes not be held. i agree with previous reviews, good for if you are out and need to express without power but other then that id suggest investing in the electric version because its less hassle

Hard to use and rather painful – I found it to be really uncomfortable and hard to get started. It's painful and after the first few attempts of using it the seal came off and even when I put the seal back on it was never the same and wouldn't pump. The only positive for me is that it was easy to clean. I wouldn't use this product again or recommend it to anyone.

Great handy emergency pump – Bought this when my electric pump was otherwise unusable. While it does take a bit to get use to it’s easy to use and easy to clean. I now take this everywhere with me in case I get stuck and need to pump. The only downside is that I don’t use Avent I use Tommee Tippee bottles. even though both are wide neck they don’t adapt to this pump. (I don’t think that’s my model I just can’t find the number on the pump!)  Show reply

Loved over electric – I used the avent single electric and felt like a jersey cow and was not comfortable for me as a first time breastfeeding expressing mum. Went to the manual and never turned back? So easy to use and easy to clean and steralise. I will not bother with the electric next time save your money guys. I was exclusively expressing and my hand wasn't too sore ;)  Show reply

Good pump for very occasional use! – This pump is good to relieve engorgement, but if you want to express frequently, you'd be better off purchasing Avents electric pump. Otherwise it is comfortable to use but does not provide a lot of suction in order to efficiently express larger quantities of milk. I do like that it is compatable with the electric pump, so even if you have purchased the manual pump and then purchase the electric pump, your manual set can still be put to use!  Show reply

Comfortable and effective – I used this pump daily for 6 months. Easy to use, comfortable and great to clean. Manual pump is convenient and small. Only con is spare parts are hard to find in Australia. Bottles discolored after a few months use however the rest was fine. This may be caused by dishwasher though. I would definitely buy again.  Show reply

It was okay – I choose this pump because it was affordable and reasonably priced, it seemed to be very popular with my friends at the time. It is comfortable to use, it just fits your breast without discomfort. I used this pump for about 8 months and it was long lasting didn't break at all. If i was going through having another baby again I would use it again.

Easy to use – I choose this pump as it didn't cost much and I only needed it for a short time. I was surprised how easy it was to use. The parts are easy to clean and compatible with the advent bottles. For me this pump did the job but if you plan on using it frequently I definitely would look into an automatic breast pump.

Easy to use – The first time i used it i didn't feel comfortable at all. On the second day though it became easier. I have used it for quite a while now. I can tell its good quality. It's easy to clean up. Overall I'm satisfied but my hands do hurt. It should definitely be expected when purchasing a manual breastpump.

Works okay without the silicone (soft massage cushion) – This pump doesn't work on me with the silicone on, it feels like it doesn't suck. I always have to remove it and just do it with bare plastic for it to suck well, therefore it doesn't feel comfortable at times, but I'm able to express 50-100mls in ine session. Will do me for now but I may consider buying another pump that will suck well but at the same time remain comfortable to use

Easy to use when you need relief – I bought this whilst feeling like I was about to explode and it relieved me better than anything because I was able to pump the roght amount out. This product is good – It's a little difficult as you've to keep pumping using your hand and fingers but it's good becouse it apparently is as fast as the baby's suction. I used it 2-3 times a day in between the feeds. It's easy to clean as well. I sometimes did put it in the dishwasher.

Wouldn't recommend it – I bought this before my baby was due because I was planning on expressing when returning to work. I couldn't get it to work at all. Pretty disappointing because they aren't exactly cheap.

Works for me – I own both this and an avent single electronic pump Scf310/01, and I much prefer the manual. Good suction, easy and quick to set up and use and I get a decent amount of milk pumped in a short period of time. I use the avent bottles as well, so it is handy that I can pump straight into them. I used a medela pump in hospital, and this is much more comfortable to use.  Show reply

very poor suction – The pumps suction is terrible! I had milk soaking through my bra and down my shirt and the pump was not able to extract the milk. I was getting over 50ml per breast while still in the hospital after having my son using another pump. I ended up having to hire a medela pump from the Breast Feeding Association ASAP it was so painful.

firm and they struggled to get a good suction (but after expressing for a short time the problem was solved); the other was that too much milk was coming out and there wasn't enough time for the milk to get through to the bottle...if that makes sense so I had to tip out the milk from the top. It is super convenient to take out in a large handbag so I have more freedom on the odd night out without my bub. The Avent products are so much better priced and I love my recent discovery of being able to buy handles for the bottles so I don't need to purchase sippy cups!
