Water Blasted fence and waited for fence to be thoroughly dry – Painted one coat but noticed some scrape marks from the gate, cats & birds. Did a second coat. Rented the property for 1 year. & have returned to find peeling paint! If I could do it all over again knowing what I know now I would have NEVER purchased this product! Avoid at all costs! Not worth the money! What annoys me is they recommended this paint as the best paint for fences! Smells nice though. I have receipts if required! Purchased from Resene Masterton Store NZ

Purchased in for $200.

Great on primed weatherboard – Used this to painted my old weather board house. Prior to painting, I had cleaned and sanded the surface. Nothing over the top, just a basic clean, filled holes and sanded/scraped any loose paint. I used Resene Quick dry as an undercoat. I took another month before applying Sonyx over the top. The paint was dry to touch after an hour and I was able to continue on from the previous days work without any after effects. It was easy to paint with but I has used a Resene undercoat. Some poor wood was treated with Resene Timberlock.

21st technical paint – Chopstick your choice of primer is technically incorrect.for cedar you should be using oilbase cover stain by resene and apply a nice wet coat if your gate is A grade timber i would use Lustacryl which is a semi-gloss apply 3 full coats sand with 180 or 240 grit between coats and you will have a great looking gate also nice to touch..i have used sonyx 101 on many fencing jobs in the past on dressed pine..sprayed and bushed the 1st two coats and sprayed the last coat..

The fence is 5yrs old now and still looking good.

i have been using RESENE for 20yrs and once you understand the material and the application method of a 21st century paint system you would not want to use the others..

March 5th 2018 Update: Sonyx 101

Chopstick...

What colour was your gate your painting..if it was a dark colour and yes your right it does tend to stay sticky but only

on dark colours due to the amount of tinter..

light colours no problem..in the past i used Lustacrly or enamaclry in the dark colours..as they have a harder surface

when dry

Sonyx – This annoying paint builds a film very fast, but does not dry under the film then slowly make its way down under the film, looks like lustacryl. Build up a nice film, then slides off like no other, really annoying. Paint should dry back to front not front to back

If only I had known – Recommended with the use of Quick Dry and Timberlock on exterior cedar gates, this was a nightmare product. *Anything* sticks to it after it is dry if hot, and rips/peels the paint and undercoat off. I dried and recoated at appropriate times but even after weeks it still sticks and comes off. Difficult to touch up as it doesn't sand well (being like rubber). Tacky when dry even after 2 months, very thick paint (which I don't like).
