Russell Hobbs Classic 2 Slice Toaster

Very Disappointed – Wish we had read these previous reviews prior to our purchase as we have been extremely disappointed with the quality and functionality of the product. The fast cooking burns the edges leaving the middle soft and undercooked. Many adjustments and trialing various settings produced further burnt edges and the centre undercooked and cold. Tried… Read more
both frozen and fresh bread slices with no improvements. The most useless and disappointing product we have ever purchased. Should have been more aware as the price seemed too good to get any quality.
Hopeless piece of trash – I've never experienced anything like this toaster. It was a nightmare. The first two broke so had to return them. Sadly the good guys wouldn't let me pick another brand. So the third one lasted about a year and half. Was always a nightmare, sometimes would only toast one side of the bread, sometimes burn the bread even on a short setting. Finally… Read more
after a year and half I gave up and binned it. I've never been so happy to bin anything in my life. Didn't even yet have a replacement, just threw it in the bin. Everything I've ever had Russell Hobbs has been awful, and that's not an exaggeration.

Most disappointing toaster I have ever purchased – Really uneven toasting of bread. One side burnt the other side hardly cooked. We tried to remedy the problem by defrosting bread but now turn the bread around to even the toasting out. It has nice deep and wide slots. It is not the cheapest two slice toaster available at around 50.00. I dismissed that something shorted out our power board… Read more
when I was using this toaster but reconsidered because someone else mentioned it shorting out their power, which I strongly suspect happened to us.
Positive reviews
Suprised how good this Toaster is – Was always a Sunbeam man, but had grown tired of my Sunbeam's uneven toasting and slowness Looked at a few reviews and decided to settle on the Russell Hobbs Classic 2 Slice Toaster The toaster is a simple no frill Toaster well priced with just the minimum clear easy managed controls The first toasting of white sliced bread on 4 setting… Read more
quickly produced its first presentation evenly browned but a bit overdone for me
The next toast on a 3 setting was perfect, in all, I was very happy with my choice, a fast even cooking toaster with subtle looks in white that will blend with any modern kitchen
Seems fine – We bought this brand simply on the fact that it had and extra wide bread slot. We had not bought Russel Hobbs previously. I read the reviews and found two that said it was woeful, but one review that was very pleased. On that one good review we bought the toaster. We are also very pleased. We have always toasted our bread by turning it halfway,… Read more · 1
because no one seems to be able to design a toaster that toasts the same on both sides, so uneven toasting is never a problem for us, however this one seems quite good for even toasting (we still turn our toast halfway - what do you expect from a low price consumer item)? It’s working fine after two days, and has a two year warranty. We set it on the lowest setting and judge how long it needs. I suppose you could buy a toaster with a computer that judges “goldenness” - but who wants to spend that kind.of money and have something else to go wrong? Anyway - an excellent choice so far.
Could do with some changes – We get uneven toasted slicers, it can brown one side and only slightly the other side, the knob that you use to adjust the browning of the slice is also easy to bump off your settings
Negative reviews
Worst toaster I have used – Don’t let this toaster’s good looks fool you. It is totally incapable of evenly toasting so you will find yourself having to flip your toast to even it up and then burning it on the second go. I wish I had seen these other reviews prior to purchase. Show details
Pure crap, do not bother – The cheapest toaster on the market would outdo this piece of rubbish. Do yourself a favour and keep those extra dollars in your pocket, this expensive piece of crap should be taken off the market!!!!! Show details
OUR OLD ONE WAS SUPERIOR – We had a Russell Hobbs for about 6 years before we needed to replace it. RH, of course. Well, no, definitely not like our old one. Thought it was a one-off that the first time in the morning the toast was perfect - after that the bread was just warmed. Decided this wasn't good for us, so swapped it for another RH. No, the same is happening… Read more
with this one. We've tried to put up with it, but it's not a cheap toaster, and we thought we were paying for quality. No. Sorry, RH, you have lost another customer.

Best toaster I’ve had! – Love this classic Russell Hobbs toaster! Toasts evenly & fast. Slots are long enough for my high tin bread which I had previously flipped/toasted in two goes for years. Did my research and gave it a go despite some negative reviews and so glad I did. Great price.. Best buy in years! Show details
Lovely unit – I've seen the bad reviews on this but disagree with them. I reckon this is a top unit. I was after a toaster to replace my Delonghi which cooked unevenly and died after just 2 years. My experience with this one is that it cooks quickly and evenly. I'm finding the dial that you use to select how much you want your bread toasted a bit tricky but… Read more
note that you have to run it hard at first to 'cure' the elements. That aside this is one of the best, and most even cooking toasters I've had. 5 out of 5.
It's great if you like your toast burnt at the edges and soft in the middle! – The lever to put it down works only if you push it down very slowly and hard, so 9/10 times it just pops back up. The toaster gets very hot all over, so hot it would cause burns, my $10 kmart toaster didn't even do that. Also, it burns the edges of toast before it would even lightly toast the middle, the house smelled like burnt toast each time we used it. Show details
nothing like my old Russell Hobbs toaster – When my 5yo toaster started tripping the power switch I didn't hesitate to replace it with another Russell Hobbs. From the very first use I knew it was more like a cheap and nasty toaster. It feels 'tinny', set off the smoke detector and didn't toast the bread nicely. Now I'm looking for someone to fix the old one. To Russell Hobbs: whatever you did to this design, undo it while you still have a small piece of your reputation intact. Show details

Short circuits my circuit breaker – Purchased for $56 from spotlight. Never been able to fully toast anything, as it trips the circuit breaker In my apartment after 10 seconds. On the specs I’ve noticed it runs at 2200-2400 watts when Australia standards are below 1200. I am taking back to get a refund as I bought a home brand Kmart toaster to test my power points and it toasts… Read more
perfectly.. shame on russel Hobbs brand as I bought the toaster to compliment the great kettle I have in that brand.
Very disappointing product – We bought this toaster recently for my for my Mum and every time I visited I was greeted by the smell of burnt toast so I checked it after a week or two of use. I tried multiple slices of sliced white and wholemeal bread (frozen and defrosted), on both sides of the toaster, on settings between 1 and 2, and they came out very brown with a burnt… Read more
edge on one side and uncooked on the other. I took the toaster back and exchanged it and the second one did the same thing in the left hand side and was more even but cold in the middle of the toast on the right hand side. When the toaster is turned on, the the very edges of the elements heat up first and the middle appears much slower which accounts for the very burnt edges of the toast. The 50% faster facility seems to result in a burnt surface and uncooked interior of the slice. Product testing has clearly been insufficient. I will return the second toaster and try another brand.
How not to make a toaster! – Initially it seemed OK, although odd that you needed to set it almost the maximum to get the toast brown. It was fairly quick, so seemed fine. But then using it again a couple of minutes later it popped up after 1m10s and was not very brown at all. Set it to the maximum of 6 and tried again, and after 1m20s it popped up, barely any browner. time I tried this I got the same result, first time fine, second time would not go long enough.
So many challenges to find a good, reliable toaster, how is it so hard to get right?!
A finger burning toaster – This toaster is unsafe. It fails to lift the toast of whatever size or shape clear of the top opening and consequently it is rarely possible to retrieve the toast without your fingers touching the hot metal. It might be a classic design but the lifting mechanism is weak and definitely not fit for its intended job
Stopped working within 2 years ...throw away – Worked well until it died in less than 2 years . These days one cannot buy anything that lasts more than a few years , and this machine was no different I suppose Show details
Burner, not toaster – This should be an incinerator not a toaster. The 50% faster toasting means it skips the stage of toasting and goes straight to burn. We tried all sorts of bread with the same result. Show details
Doesn't toast evenly – $50. Has not toasted evenly since we got it. Burn to edge of the bread but doesn't toast the middle. Going to toss it as soon as I can afford another brand. Show details
Worst toaster I’ve ever bought – Burns the crust and doesn’t bother with the bread. I’m tossing it, and reading product reviews for the next one instead of relying on the “brand”. That’s $50 down the drain. Show details
Expensive for cheap and nasty – Went with this brand as its reputation is good but once out of the box appeared cheap and lightweight. Says it toasts faster but it just burns the outside without toasting it through so once you put a spread on its just soggy and falls apart. Very disappointed and will not buy this brand again! Great toaster – Toasts perfectly every time and so quick, toast comes out soft in the centre & nicely browned on both sides. Been looking for a toaster that cooks this way for years, most toasters are very low wattage & dry out the bread so it’s like cardboard. Majority of toasters are given high star rating & supposably save energy but in reality this only… Read more
uses more power as they take a lot longer to cook hence they will use more total power.
Only one minor complaint, the supposed cord storage is poor attempt compared to other brands.
Top rated Brand not so good – Replaced a Russell Hobbs toaster within the year as it would intimately toast only one side of the bread, took it back even though under warranty we had to put $10 extra towards one similar as the first was discontinued. This one is doing exactly the same, it's very frustrating and are thinking of returning it, sometimes it works and others it… Read more
doesn't. thin slice bread and raisen bread is used and sometimes Crumpets. I will never again buy a Russell Hobbs item as the Brand name has declined in my view.
These toasters have a design fault – First one did not toast evenly, I took it back and received a replacement only to find it was exactly the same as the first one. Clearly has a wiring fault as it does not heat properly. I took it back, and swapped it for a sunbeam toaster that is perfect at all settings. Harris Scarf were great to deal with and hopefully gave feedback to Russel Hobbs to improve their faulty toaster. Show details
Toasts too fast – You may think toasting fast, they say 50% faster but I think it’s way quicker like 1 quarter the time my old Russell Hobbs toasted, is a great thing. I find that it’s just too fast and though it’s toasts evenly, it’s too quick to allow the bread to heat right through so it comes out brown on the outside but too soft and cool on the inside. Not to… Read more
my taste. You can only control how brown the toast comes out, not the temperature of the elements, which glow really red hot, so no control over toasting time and hence final temperature of the finished toast. Preferred waiting for the toast with the old model.
Only lasted sixteen months – Purchased a Russell Hobbs Classic 2 slice toaster in January 2017 and it only lasted until May 2018. Went to use it one morning and the lever would not stay down. Next thing I realised was that it shorted out power to a section of the house. Although still under warranty to make a claim you had to send the toaster back to them and they would… Read more
either repair or replace it. As we had visitors arriving that week we could not afford to be without a toaster so I went a purchased a new one. Interestingly, if you try to register a warranty online through the website they give you www.spectrumbrands.com.au/warranty it comes up as an unsafe website. I did a google search on Spectrum Brands and the opening line of their website page is that it for marketing purposes only and follows that warranties do not need to be registered. At $49.95 it was no big loss and you get what you pay for.
"New Improved" isn't always better – When our old Russell Hobbs toaster died recently we didnt hesitate to buy another of the same brand. The old one which we had purchased many years ago was reliable and toasted beautifully. The new one looked similar but unfortunately that was about it. We very quickly realsed that the " 50% faster technology" actually meant burnt toast!! An… Read more
automatic toaster should not mean stand here and keep flicking the toast up just in case. I would definitely not recommend this product - save yourself the heartache and try another brand.
Wasted money – It always burns the toast, it looks good but we made wrong mistake to buy this toaster as it wasted money. We bought this one from JB HiFi, which was on special, probably that was why they wanted to get rid of it. I don't think i would buy this brand toaster any more. Show details
Average. Toasts alright, but you can't get the toast out! – We use this toaster for bread, crumpets and English muffins. You cannot lift the toast high enough to get it out without burning your fingers! Crumpets and muffins have to be tonged out (after safely turning off the toaster) or try flipping it out! Major design flaw. Always found it toasts alright. Show details
Good Toaster Model RHT12 WHI – I'd just about given up with toasters and had been toasting using my oven grill which is time consuming and expensive. Had a couple of duds over the last two years, but so far this one is doing was it is supposed to do...cook toast, it's a great little toaster. Cooks both sides. No fuss operation. Nice shiny white and chrome finish. Show details
TERRIBLE QUALITY TOASTER MADE IN CHINA – I am waiting for a replacement, it will be a replacement for a replacement. I was only replaced before Christmas & this NEW ONE HAD GREEN SPARKS flying & DID NOT TOAST PROPERLY. I told Hobbs l wanted a different brand as it came from THE GOOD GUYS....Unfortunately l didn't have my receipt which they told me was the warranty, at first they were not… Read more
going to replace it until l told them l would contact CHOICE & Consumer Afairs am still waiting for it to arrive. They also reminded me they all come from China so if l changed brands they were all basically RUBBISH.
Can't complain about the bread toasting – I am using this product on a regular basis and the toaster does it's job really good. The design of the product is really nice and it's got a dial with a light which is really nice. I did some research before buying this product and I don't regret it now its money well spent I would recommend this product to everyone. Show details
Toaster can't toast – I purchased the Russell Hobbs Classic toaster as it was on sale now I know why. It won't toast evenly, it's either burnt to a crisp and that's on a lower setting or it doesn't toast enough and it continually sets off my smoke alarm. I haven't gone through so much burnt bread in my life. I'll be returning my purchase to the store this weekend,… Read more
as I have had enough of this toaster and will go and buy a cheap one for $20 it will probably do a lot better.
No wonder this item is discontinued. Lasted 3 months. Worse than Chinese cr#p. Show details
