The steam generator order number AUBW449635572 functions well and was bought because it has a low noise rating. The problem is when the unit was unpacked and the water filter removed for inspection (prior to use) the threads for the filter were corroded, which should not be the case when buying an "unused item". That being said because it came from NSW I was reluctant to return it with the current fuel shortage and uncertainty with transport.
Follow-up · The filter is easy to clean, the steam generator is quiet, it functions well, water quality is fine, the corrosion has not affected performance. If Russel Hobbs had lubricated the surfaces before they test the machines, then pack them with moisture still in the tank, these surfaces would not have corroded. They have not given me a satisfactory reply only platitudes asking for more information not required for a reasonable response to my review.

Faulty from the start, major water leak from base unit – Purchased 18th September 2024, started making a constant slow hissing sound while in use. It was steam and water leaking water around the silicon plug in the base of the steam generator unit (not from the iron sole plate). A lot of bubbling, steam and water leaking from the base unit, soaking the bench where the unit was sitting. So disappointed, as this iron is fabulous otherwise.

Hi Uncm, we're sorry to hear it has not been working as it should and we apologise for the inconvenience caused. That's certainly not what we'd expect, and we appreciate you reaching out. We recommend getting in touch with place of purchase to discuss return/exchange options, if you continue having issues with return, please contact us; info@spectrumbrands.com.au
I received a replacement from place of purchase. Thank you. They also identified that the valve in the water tank was leaking after only less than a week of use. I hope the second unit will be OK.
If you have any further trouble, please contact Russell Hobbs directly so that we can assist. info@spectrumbrands.com.au
The replacement unit is excellent, the iron is really fantastic, and I actually highly recommend it! However the star rating remains, as proper product design and testing should prevent catastrophically faulty products getting onto the market. The ease of return process and experience is always retailer dependent in Australia. I was very, very fortunate that Spotlight Innaloo were so understanding about such an early complete failure of the first steam generator.

June 2025, sadly today the iron has started a continous warning beep and red light indicator permanently on. The manual says internal error, do not use the product, with no resolution process. So now it has completely failed. This iron (the replacement for the first faulty one) lasted 9 months, not even for the manufacturer warranty period in Australia. I did absolutley love using this iron as it performed beautifully, with great even temperature and strong steam power. These appliances are expensive and it is disappointing they do not go the distance. This is a do not waste your money product, please look at other brands for quality.
Hi, For troubleshooting the anti-scale, please download the manual and complete troubleshooting steps on page 6. The anti-scale filter should be opened and cleaned before use to prevent build up. To download the manual please click the link to the product page on the website: external link Your item does come with a 2-year warranty, for any faulty products, please return to store or contact us here: external link Russell Hobbs Australia Team
Yes, it had been descaled, very clean. Turned on again and got solid red light again with constant beeping, non operational. The manual says this is an internal error and to stop using the iron. Major failure. So I have now returned this 2nd faulty unit to Spotlight with my receipt. They were WONDERFUL about it and refunded me under warranty as it was only 9 months since purchase. Thank you for your replies.
Hi Uncm, Great news! to hear that Spotlight were able to refund you under the warranty. Should you experience any further issues, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Some great features but one major flaw – I’ve never owned a steam generation / steam station iron so I was very excited to bring this beast home. If you’ve never owned one, steam station irons have a large base unit with a big water tank (close to two litres). They are too big and heavy for a standard ironing board so need to sit on the floor, table or special board. The Russell Hobbs has a good length electrical cord and steam cord and I was able to sit it on the floor. They pump out a lot of steam which smooths wrinkles with ease (right through to the other side) and you can iron a huge basket without refilling the tank.
You plug it in and allow a few minutes to heat up. I like that the Russell Hobbs allows you to select the level of steam (many don’t). The iron itself is very light and can be rested face down on the board between garments which takes some getting used to! This particular unit has a base on the iron that you can rest on the board so the iron is upright if you prefer (some other brands don’t and you have to rest face down). You pull the trigger to generate steam and pull twice quickly for a stronger burst. When you first heat it up you need to hold the trigger for a few seconds to get the steam pumping through.
The ironing experience was a little disappointing. Steam generation was impressive but the iron didn’t glide well. It seemed to stick or dig in a bit. The sole plate was clean and I had only ironed cotton so it wasn’t user error. I rang customer service and spoke to a lovely woman in Australia who suggested I take it back as apparently it should glide smoothly.
Also, the heavy steam cord was awkward. It is very inflexible and I found it restricted my movement.
I ended up returning the unit and the sales person suggested I try a Philips 7000 instead. It cost a little more but it is a far superior unit. Glides beautifully, very light iron which is easy to use and guaranteed not to burn.
What I liked about the Russell Hobbs:
- Big capacity tank - Manual selection of steam level - Good customer service
What I didn’t enjoy:
- Sole plate didn’t glide well - Unwieldy steam cord which impeded movement
It is possible that I received a defective unit but overall I much prefer the Philips.
