Drawn out claim, blamed me for not chasing them more frequently
Changed from our long time insurer due to cheaper price offered, after first claim attempt just discovered why. I have just contaced them (again) after no response within the time frame they specify (again). Claim got put through on the spot as I had supplied all the documents requested of me. I asked if he could explain why it had taken so long over the time limit they specify and why I received no response or correspondence from them. His response, it was my fault because I should have been calling more frequently to check they were doing what they told me they were doing.
They are cheaper for a reason, just bare that in mind if you're tempted to change to them.

Do not insurer through St George
Worse decision I have ever made, I got talked into swapping from my long time insurer when I took out an additional property mortgage, yes they were cheaper but now that I need them, no compassion, no assistance, no cover. I will never recommend or use them again. Because of this I am transferring all my accounts and properties to another bank, will they care "No" but I will feel better. Pay a little more in premium but get better cover. Save yourself heartache and insurer elsewhere. Mk3 where also the Assessors that came out to my home, horrible person, all he wanted to find were reasons to ensure the claim would not go through, who pays them St George, what else would you expect.
Can’t even speak to anyone
Trying to update my policy and tried to make a claim (separate enquiries) - have rung them multiple times for the past 5 days. Cannot even physically speak to anyone.. just hearing the same automated message (press 1 for blah blah blah). Cannot use their email function as it says not working. Absolute sh*t.
Terrible Experience Avoid at All Costs - Stress Not Worth It
It has been 3 months since the flood at my place. 600 litres of water everywhere. Mk3 Assessors were engaged. They were rude, misogynistic and utterly useless at recording the items damaged. Avoid St George and Westpac and anyone else connected to them. Trying to get the payment (very low, considering the distress & damage etc) was a complete nightmare. Do NOT USE these people they are absolutely terrible. No idea of customer experience or care for the client at all.
Avoid using St George Westpac Contents Insurances
I have had water damage to my kitchen and timber floorboards. Provided quotes to Claim Central who are the assessors for St George. To have the kitchen cabinets replaced (polyurethane kitchen panels) Claim Central /St George have quoted to replace my kitchen draws and infill panel for only $411. that is it. Claim Central would prefer having their tradesmen repair the damages to your home and pay their trades WAY BELOW the LEGAL WAGEs.
Claim Central have quoted me $211 to buy, install and cut to size solid core front door . THEY CANNOT B...
St George insurance given me stress
After a month of trying to claim for my bed and washing machine, finally said they will approve, after waiting 5 working days, I rang them they said my clam is rejected, because my bed is very expensive. First they wanted proof or purchase, which I gave, then they wanted quote as to say they are not repairable or useable, I gave them both, they rejected the quote I got from Myers, said it wasn't proper quote, I went to another store for another quote, rang St George back, she said cannot except it, cause it dose not describe the bed, by this t...ime I was fuming, I said to her 'do you want me to bring the bed to Barangaroo' where they are located. She said she needs to see the label of the bed, I sent that as well. She said ok I approve it. After waiting 5 days, them not calling me back to say, it is not approved because the bed is way to expensive Let me ask you, the washing machine I bought for $1,100, they said they will only pay me $636, which I excepted, now if the bed I had a quote for much higher than I bought why are they not excepting that. I am still waiting on the outcome, if they reject it, I have no choice but to go to Ombudsman, this has stressed me out so much, my nerves in my body are all cross wired, I waited for 1 month for the washing machine, not being able to wash my clothes, now waiting for the bed.
St. George Insurance corrupt
Disgraceful and corrupt would be the best I would be able to describe St. George home insurance. Let me be perfectly honest here, the entire Australian Insurance Industry are having a financial laugh at our, we the consumers, expense. The premiums charged are done so without any real commitment to honoring payment for the majority of bona fide claims should we ever need them to be. I digress let me regale you with my St. George experience.
Some months ago a severe rain event here in Brisbane caused water to enter the rear of my home throu...gh gaps created between eaves and roof iron by high winds. I took video footage of the water leaking from the top of the entirety of the rear internal wall cornice down onto the floor below. This footage clearly demonstrated not only the fact that the several areas of the roof had been compromised, but also water damage to timber mouldings, gyprock roof sheet, and associated floor skirting, swollen floor boards, paint blistering etc. My response was to immediately call and lodge a claim with St. George, all very helpful so far. After 14 days with no movement from St. George I engaged a reputable builder to assess the damage, and repair same to a standard where there would be no repeat. The total damage bill for all reparations, and restoration to the areas compromised by the aforementioned significant rain event (clearly covered if you are to believe the Product Disclosure Documents) came to $3 200. I sent the repair bill to St. George insurance via email quoting the reference number provided by the claims person I initially spoke to. Shortly there after I am called by one of the most arrogant females I have ever had the displeasure to speak with, who basically told me that the entire invoice amounted to nothing more than maintenance and as such my claim would not be honored. So I BLEW UP telling her perhaps she might consider calling the builder and getting the information in relation to the work done before rejecting my claim without a shred of credible evidence. Two entire months go by, the builder had informed me that he had been contacted and that St. George had agreed that my claim was appropriate in the circumstances. I finally get a call from St. George who tell me that they would be honoring my claim but only for the damage component of the invoice, which in their estimate amounted to $605 only - they then tell me that it would not be prudent for me to proceed with the claim due to the fact that given my excess was $500 it would not be worth losing my no claim bonus status, and associated revised increased premium schedule, for a meager $102. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! If you have an ounce of self preservation do not trust ST. GEORGE insurance (WESTPAC underwriters by the way) as they will rip you off without the least bit of human decency. I am in the throws of taking all of my financial eggs out of the St George/Westpac basket and moving over to alternative smaller lenders (NOT the BIG FOUR). I guess over the term of the rest of my life any interest/premiums that I might have paid them will not matter one bit but with the assistance of 'Product Review' I may be able to assist others in some small way. Good luck with your insurance claims in the future but prepare to be disappointed as the entire Australian insurance industry is corrupt and morally bankrupt.
1 claim becomes 3 buy stgeorge how wrong are they
I have never realised how bad st George is my daughter has made a claim for 3 tvs that her wild child has broken within a month and she has spoken to 5 different people and not 1 has told her the same story .. They won't accept the 3 tvs as 1 claim and trying to charge her 300 per Rv what a bloody joke after paying all this money they want more let me know how any body feels about this matter please
My daughter had 2 gum trees crash through her roof during the Hunter storms of April 2015, here we are, 7 months later, and she still is still living out of one room and a bedroom, with holes in her roof and ceiling, frayed and leaking tarps on the roof and containers everywhere to catch the rain as it runs into her house. St George's customer relations are abysmal, they just take your money then fob you off. I've already cancelled my insurance with them, found to my surprise that their premiums are twice that of a reputable company, and will suggest to my daughter that she does the same
We were broken into on Mother's day this year. We didn't have an assessor come to our property until one month after and he missed certain items. After continually calling them and Stream we had a part cash advance and the house secured with make safe (one month later)!
To date September 2015 we still do not have the claim finalised and the door replaced nor do we have the door completely secure! No follow ups, no touching base and Stream and Probuilt Australia are the worst I have ever endured. I never heard from them regarding an update and have to chase them every month for an update. Not worth the paper its written on.
Takes too long for claim approval
Broken into 8th October 2014. Took them 5 weeks or so to approve first claim. Sent second claim as found more receipts and manuals for items stolen. Hate to see how long this claim takes as so close to Christmas. Insurance assesser missed half of the items on our receipts that he wrote down on paper. Not happy with the service from the bank. Shouldn't take so long when you produce receipts and manuals for stolen items. To top it off. They told me that I can't claim on my spare car keys as its a car accessory. So had to make a claim on my car in...surance for my keys to be re keyed.before the thieves came back and stole my 2012 car. Cost me the first $400.00. Total cost of re keying $1200.00. If they hadn't broken in my spare keys would still be here.
Misleading - they do not cover what they verbally advise they do.
I took out StGeorge (also known as Westpac General Insurance) building and landlords insurance for a house I bought. I let StGeorge know it was a carpeted house and they told me all fixed floor coverings were included - everything seemed in order. 3 months later my house has suffered a flash flood, I called to lodge a claim and they inform me carpet isn't covered, they don't class carpet as a fixed floor covering. Apparantly this proviso was in the fine print of the PDS they mailed me and even though it contradicts the verbal information they g...ave me they will not honour my claim. I fell into their trap - don't do that same thing, read their PDS online before you take the insurance and don't beleive a word they tell you verbally as they are not accountable. These guys deserve a shonky award for this misleading behaviour. I have lodged a complaint with the Financial Services Ombudsman to try and prevent this happening to someone else.
benign with St George for two years just made a claim hopping i can use my card soon to the money and hopping there will not put my Insurance up
but can redo my insurance again if it goes up as there ask if you had made three claims with in three years or $8000+
so hoping we don't get hit more but over all great but takes a bit for money to come back Just ask for the money to go to bank account not as a gift card :( bad thing i did hahaha just got it but can't activate it as i don't know the pin :)
have to keep asking is happening take about 2-4 weeks to get my money back for my iPhone screen replacement
Really good value for money, i really like the choice of 3 types of cover. Good over the phone service. I would recommend give them a go. :)
Really happy with the service and was offered the best price on Home and Contents insurance. We compared pricing with 15 different insurance companies. They also offer 3 option of cover ranging from budget to premium
Havent had any problems wih St George Insurance!
You can pay by the month at no extra cost! They have just approved and paid me cheque for the claim i just made on our fence. This was damaged in the recent floods. 2 quotes sent to them and 2 weeks later i received a call then a cheque in the mail. Great company to deal with. Really professional. GREAT price. They also cover for floods. I will be sticking to this company for my home insurance :=)
GREAT thank you! We had some damage to our fence in the recent floods. Not a problem for St George at all.
Questions & Answers
How do i get a free home&content insurance quote from st george?
Do I have to be a bank customer to get home & contents insurance?
Hi Sharyn, St George Insurance is offered through Westpac i believe. Back when i joined St George Insurance i didnt need to be a St George or a Westpac bank customer, i do believe they have since changed this and you may need to. I would give them a call to check. Still extremely impressed with the insurance they offer. I just had to make yet another claim (also one in the floods a couple of years ago) and they were very good dealing this it and the outcome was excellent. Goodluck!
