Hi there, pretty sure it is to unjam nails. You release the clip near the nail pad and move the switch on top.

What brand of brads are best suited for this nailer?

I use Powerfit from the big green shed. I would think any brand is fine as long as the gauge is correct.

Will it nail into hardwood

Absolutely it will nail into hardwood. The nail penetration can be adjusted so nail head can be just below surface.
