How to remove hot plate

Hi Ken, Make sure you take the probe out first then the hot plate should just lift off. Thanks

Hi. l purchased a Sunbeam HG5400 barbecue kettle from Harvey Norman's during a visit to Melbourne approx 18 months ago, for use on my apartment balcony in Kuala Lumpur, as use of gas barbecues is prohibited. This model is not available from Harvey Normans in Malaysia. I've only used the barbecue <10 times and on the last use, the light did not illuminate when the control probe was plugged into the barbecue and the power turned on, and the barbecue did not heat up. I checked to make sure that the probe was correctly seated but the barbecue would not operate. I've tried a couple of times since without success. I suspect that a fuse or the internal circuitry in the control probe unit has burnt out.

I have been to the Sunbeam appliances after sales service website to order a replacement but the search function doesn't recognise the model number.

Please advise.

I have the same issue and not sure what is not working

Hi, have a HG5400. When I slide the vent to closed it’s not fully tight closed due to the notch, is that correct? Is it best to roast meat with the foil on a rack or straight on the grill plate? I was told that 12 heat was about 180C and Super Sear is the roast setting. Recipe book calls for a 2hr 15m cook on Roast - very bad that no reference to roast on the appliance or otherwise in the booklet. Also no information re vent open or closed .....and the closed vent is still ‘open’ just over a cm anyway. I am assuming that the dome cavity becomes like a closed oven so maybe the 2hrs 15 is meant to be at a much lower temp. Quite confusing and is going to be expensive if the meal is wrecked. Can’t keep checking as the appliance will loose heat. Any help welcome.

Hi Candy, The vent is not meant to be fully closed as too much moisture would build up in the oven and would fall down onto the food so it is made to allow the user to adjust heat temperature as well as moisture throughout the cooking process. After initially browning meat on the grill plate, cook on a roasting rack. This prevents excess browning on one side and eliminates turning the meat over. It seems that MAX setting is the best and then control it by opening or closing the vent. That is how I have always worked my electric BBQ. If you adjust the probe temperature down lower, you tend to lose too much heat when cooking roasts. Hope this helps. Thanks

Thanks for the reply & Happy Christmas. I cooked a chicken according to the recipe book & it was good. I did it on foil so plenty of juice, more than the drip tray would have handled & then browned at the end. I did the turkey in a cast iron electric frypan, same principal as the BBQ but smaller. Browned on high then reduced to 1/2 heat. On top of veg, turned 1/2 way through. Vent closed. It was good, probably overdone by 15 minutes! Usually cook over stock in a foil tent so much moister that way) The herb/veg underneath made brilliant gravy. Next time on your advice I will retry the BBQ. Thanks again.

Love this bbq. Great size. Cooks everything well. Unfortunately twice now, once after 3 months, the second time after 5 months, it just stopped working. No problem with replacing from The Good Guys and just trying for the third time and hopefully have better luck as when it works it’s great. Would like to know the reason for it suddenly stopping though.

Had the same problem but out of warranty. Seems to be a problem with the remote making contact to make the thermostat part work. I replaced it but then had problems and had to replace the hotplate. Next time I had problems I gave me up. I was never totally happy as I never had any success using it as an oven for pork roasts. Replaced it with a single burner Ziggler and Brown which gives me almost a year from an 8.5kg cyclinder of gas.

Hi Natalie P. Thank you for contacting Sunbeam with your concern. It may be the control probe that it is issue - although hard to confirm without testing. If you have any further issues please call Sunbeam on 1300 881 861.

There is no Roast setting on the probe and no gauge on the lid, just up to Super sear. What is the sequence for Roast Chicken as in the Instruction/Recipe booklet "on Roast setting with lid on"???

Hi JMV thanks for your review....for slow roasting we would recommend the low heat setting or regular roasting the medium setting, hope this assists.

We have purchased the Kettle BBQ - downsized from a big 4 burner - when roasting we seem to generate excess moisture. Have turned air vent both ways but still an issue. Maybe we are not preheating enough? Any thoughts?

Umm, not sure. Haven't encountered same problem. Definitely have vent open if this is the case (I generally have it closed to keep heat in). The way I roast anything is use a rack from an oven roasting pan (sits about 10-15 millimetres off BBQ surface) then just place the meat on some foil upturned on the corners. Depending a the cut of meat sometimes cover it completely in foil to say the last 15-20 mins. The less fat in the meat the longer to keep it covered so doesn't go dry. Sometimes I put meat directly on BBQ surface right at end just for a minute to char the meat a bit if need be to taste. If you cover the meat the whole time in foil then that may cause your moisture issue??? Hope to have been some help.
