2nd time this product has broken down in the middle of cooking – I've already replaced this product under warranty because it broke down in the middle of cooking, and the replacement has also broken down. Sunbeam also refused to replace it both times, telling me it was the responsibility of the retailer I bought it from (online from oo.com.au), with the retailer telling me it was Sunbeam who were responsible before the retailer relented. I won't bother buying another sunbeam product.
Sunbeam Rice Cooker- 10 cup – I've tried a few different ways of cooking the rice but it burns the bottom layer every single time.. I am forced to cook extra rice as I throw the burnt rice out.
Same problems as other reviewers – Switch won't activate the cook function, stays on keep warm. When you flick the switch down the LED momentarily stays on cook then goes to keep warm. Only used a few times.
Rice cooker exploded! Loud bang, sparks, and then tripped the RCD switch! – I've had this rice cooker for a couple of years and it's always been awful. The "warm" function leaves the rice all crusty, and the coating on the non-stick pot has flaked off constantly, despite using the plastic paddle that came with it. Half the time, it flips back to the "warm" function in the middle of cooking, meaning that just as your… Read more
curry/stirfry/etc is perfectly cooked, you realise that the rice hasn't finished cooking, so it totally mucks up the timing of your dinner!
All these things are annoying, and I probably wouldn't have bought another Sunbeam rice cooker anyway, but last night convinced me - the rice cooker blew up! I was standing next to it while it was on, and all of a sudden there was a huge bang, a big flash of light and then it tripped the RCD switch in the house and the power went out! There was a horrible burning smell and smoke, the the power cord where it attaches to the base of the appliance had melted. The bang was loud enough to leave my ears ringing, and I can only imagine that I would have received an electric shock had I touched the appliance at the wrong time. From reading the other comments on this site, it seems that this model has some serious design flaws, as others have also had the appliance burn out. Needless to say, I will not be buying a Sunbeam rice cooker again!
TLDR: Rice cooker blew up, tripped the RCD switch. Even before that, it was bad. Cheap It exploded! Rice was uncooked or crusty.
Are you kidding me? – Three weeks after purchasing this item, and approximately five uses, the motor burnt out. Yesterday, I returned it to the point of purchase for a replacement (absolutely not problems with the seller!) and this morning, the replacement rice cooker burnt out on the first use! Are you kidding me? I purchased a "name" brand over a $13… Read more
you-beaut-import thinking it would be more reliable - I won't be falling for that again. I'm done with Sunbeam: thought it was compact, easy to clean/operate - just not reliable! Compact, easy to clean and operator Two for two now with burnt out motors after one-five uses.
Unreliable rice cooker – After using this rice cooker twice with no problems, it now switches to the 'keep warm' function well before the rice is cooked. Once it is in the 'keep warm' setting you are unable to move it back to the 'cook' setting. I've used it multiple times subsequently, hoping that the rice cooker would somehow fix itself, however each time I've ended up having to cook the rice in the microwave. Completely useless. Unreliable, doesn't work
Never had a problem with it! – Looked up the rice cooker to see whether you can cook risotto in it - I remembered there was something about that in the original instruction booklet (long gone!) and am genuinely surprised by all the negative reviews! I have had mine for about 7 years and seriously have never, ever had a problem with it! Perfectly cooked rice every time! (And no, I don't work for Sunbeam!) Super reliable, easy to clean!
2nd Time Lucky – The first one we bought blew up as soon as we turned it on. Had to bring it back to Bing Lee. Not happy. Wanted to replace it with a different brand but none avail. We replaced it with the same one and lucky enough it worked. But, once in a while the darn thing auto turns off in the middle of cooking leaving uncooked rice when about to be served. Not happy. Small, cute Unreliable, Quality bad

Poor quality rice cooker – We bought one of these after our previous rice cooker broke after nearly 10 years (different brand). The first time we used it there was a funny smell of burning plastic, the second time it broke. We exchanged it but the replacement doesn't work either. The first time we used it the rice was underdone (we followed instructions exactly) The… Read more
next time it switched to warm half way through cooking, after switching back to cook it kept going for another little while and turned off again. After the third go the rice seemed to be done but it was inconsistent, and half of it still uncooked. Inexpensive, small enough for two but big enough for a few more Doesn't work. The warm function seems to bake the bottom layer of rice a toasty brown.

Bad – Marginally better than using a saucepan/steamer to cook rice as it cooks and keeps warm at the right consistency when you need it. It takes a few attempts to work out the right amount of water for the consistency of rice you want cooked (the guide they give you is useless). Once you are used to it it's not too bad but very basic. Am concerned… Read more
about the poor quality flaking non-stick coat being a health risk so will not be using it again. Reasonable price Very poor quality non-stick bowl - coating started flaking off after a few months despite being careful only to use non-stick implements.
Terrible – I would not recommend this rice cooker to anyone. I am now shopping for a different one as I love rice. I think I will find a multi-functional one now. Cheap Non-stick bowl isn't so non-stick. It started to peel off the same week. When cooking, water boils so much that it spits out of the vent hole and all over the counter.
Bad – Each time I have used this, it litteraly sprays out the water through the vent hole on the top of the lid. It is gluggy, starchy water from the rice and is really difficult to clean. It sprays this mess up to 1 meter away from the rice cooker itself. I simply dont use it any more as it creates more work than anything else. I am really… Read more
dissapointed as I have other sunbeam products that I love. If you are considering this model... just don't buy it
this rice cooker makes such a mess making it terrible to clean
Excellent – This is my second Sunbeam 5 cup, the first one lasted 2 1/2 years. Compared to the next 2 that I bought of a different brand that lasted no more than 2 months. This size is great for a family of four, even cooking 2 1/2 cups of rice we have too much. We're a family of four and found this rice cooker convenient, easy to clean, my husband doesn't… Read more
burn the rice, and even the kids know how to use it. It also fits conveniently in the cupboard whereas a lot of the larger ones just take up too much room. The handle on the lid sticks up so I have to invert the lid to put it away in the cupboard. Other than that it's great. The rice needs to be rinsed before cooking otherwise it will become gluggy but this happens anytime you cook rice the absorption way and don't rinse it. It's not the rice cooker that causes the problem as indicated in other reviews.

Excellent – Love it!! A rice cooker is an essential item in any kitchen. This cooks rice perfect every time, and no need to slave away with cooking rice in a saucepan, trying to guess the water level and making a mess over the stove top. With this, you just put the rice in and walk away to let it cook. I am very against one use appliances, but a rice cooker… Read more
is essential! Cooks rice perfectly. Very simple to use - just add rice and water and press a button. Non stick, easy to clean. Spits starchy water out of the steam hole and it messes up the bench top.
Terrible – Worst product I have ever used in my kitchen. I will never ever buy anythng from sunbeam brand. I do not unerstand how come some people even left possitive reviews about this, do not kow if I have got a defaulted piece or what. The cooker is cheap and takes very minimum time to cook. I do not know from where to start, its an advice to everyone who… Read more
is thinking of buying this Please spend your money on something better, this product is really cheap & so is its performance just like its price, When left on KEEP WARM OPTION rice always gets burn and stick to the surface, so you can't eat that bit which got stuck to the surface below such a waste every time. So I had to switch off the cooker once rice are cooked, so end up eating cold stiff rice, so the cooker did not solve the purpose. The non stick bowl it actually not at all non stick and is made up of cheapest possible material, the paint started chipping the very first week I bought the cooker. Before using sunbeam I used Toshiba, I simply loved it and can not praise it enough, I changed the cooker because my toshiba only cooked 2 cups hence I was looking for a bigger one. I just wrote a complain email to sunbeam customer care, but I do not think they will do anything, anyway I am going to buy toshiba tomorrow, I learnt my lesson, never trust cheaper brands. So friends do not make yourself a fool like I did. Happy shopping.
OK – I am very happy with this purchase. It is good value, looks attractive and doesn't take up much space. You just watch the bottom of the pan once your rice is cooked - not an uncommon issue with rice cookers from experience. It doesn't take up much bench space compared to larger cookers - ideal for a family for 4-5 people. Very cheap (under $30).… Read more
Easy to clean and operate. Some people have mentioned the crust. I have found this only to occur on the keep warm function. With flavoured rice dishes the crust is actually tasty if not overdone. But when you are only after fluffy white rice, clearly it can be disappointing.
We love it – Having just read the other reviews, I am surprised by the negative ratings, maybe they are inconsistent. We started with a Tefal 10 cup rice cooker as a gift, and immediately realised how much easier a cooker is than keeping careful watch on a pot. However a 10 cup model cannot cook the one or sometimes 2 cups we use. And they're too big. Using… Read more
good grade jasmine rice, use the supplied measuring cup (175ml not 250 ml) and add cold water to the corresponding mark on the bowl. Works perfectly every time for us. And we never rinse the rice beforehand. Basmati however does need a long pre-soak. How other rices such as European or local go I cannot say.
When it does burn out, it will one day, I'll be straight back for another. Cheap, small, down to one cup capacity, and 9/10 result 9/10 times. Only that it does sometimes froth from the vent. At this price you don't get a filter.
Excellent rice cooker – It cooks rice perfectly once you get the proportions right (roughly 1.5 water to 1 rice but depends on type). Having had quite a few of these over the years, this is one of the best. And the big advantage over other rice cookers is that the Sunbeam is easy to clean and doesn't have all those cavities under the lid to store bacteria. Cooks good rice and is very easy to clean
If you like eating porridge then buy one of these – Tried following the instructions to the 'T'. didn't work. Tried less water. Didn't work, tried more water, got rice glue out of the vent a total waste of money
Good – We have had our rice cooker for 6 years and it works well. It is a good size, as even if we have 8 people eating rice as a side dish it holds enough. It cooks rice perfectly, including white and brown rice. It cooks rice cooker meals well too. They're not expensive, and don't take up too much space, and make great rice. After a while we started spraying it with non-stick spray as it would get a bit stuck on the bottom, especially with brown rice.
Terrible – This is a big rice cooker which should give you lovely white fluffy rice, but I have not been able to do it. I can make fried rice, where I just saute some onions and add some whole spices like cloves and cinnamon and some chilli powder and then add rice, this comes out really well. I have given up trying to make white rice with this one. I bought… Read more
this one to make cooking a bit easier, but this one is just sitting in the bottom of my kitchen cupboard. I am not able to make white rice correctly with this cooker, it always ends up having a crusty pancake at the bottom. It should be easy to use, but somehow I am not able to make white rice properly in it even after following the directions.
Terrible – Liked the rice cooker and the rice it cooked, however, I don't think one is meant to have to jiggle the switch to get it to actually work. And, this is the second machine which has been like this. My husband bought one when he was living in Sydney two yrs ago, same problem as with this one bought last week. So, two machines, same problem of an… Read more
electrical issue, bought 2 yrs apart. Refund for me. Great neat shape. The feet are tucked away under a rim. Looks like many other rice cookers. I am downsizing and was looking for SMALL. Cooked the rice really well. Nothing really.
Good – Where would I be without my rice cooker. I could never really master the art of cooking a perfect cup of rice but now that I have my Sunbeam Rice maker I have! It is so easy to use and allows you to cook smaller quantities of rice, unlike some of the other brands. This rice cooker is easy to clean and stores well. I am a very satisfied customer… Read more
and recommend this to one and all. It could perhaps be a little trendier looking (i.e. they could offer it in stainless steel and perhaps red or black?) as white appliances aren't really all that current any more.
