Telstra Smart Modem 4

The modem is excellent, very fast on FTTP and a lot better than my old 8-10 year old Telstra modem and i don't need my 2 extenders any more. But there are things to be aware of when setting up that Telstra don't tell you. Firstly they state that if you just change the name and pw to your old modem credentials everything will automatically connect ....tried that but get 'no internet connection'. Changed it back and all good. Secondly if like me you have smart plugs and cameras that only run on 2.4 Ghz then you need to go into 'mymodem' and disable WiFi 7 and 'Band Sharing'. You will then have 2 networks, select the 2.4 network on your phone when you re-network all your smart devices and they will all connect. You will lose a bit of speed but so be it, still much faster than the old FTTN and it goes further than the 5.4 signal. Telstra don't tell you this but Google is a wonderful tool. This would be beyond the average non-tech person which is concerning.

If you are thinking of getting the new Telstra Smart Modem 4 DON'T, DO NOT, DOOOO NOT. Since I got mine, I have spent (no exaggeration) over eight hours and 2 modems with level 2 techs, until I was told that I am not the only one with this issue of dropouts, and they are sending an update when they can resolve it. All I can do is put up and shut up
Follow-up · When the modem drops out, it affects the internet, WiFi, Foxtel , security cameras, and anything associated with WiFi. When I spoke to a Telstra Rep two days ago, she said that there had been 25 dropouts that day. I spent almost 1 1/2 hours on the phone, A few tecs have said that this model has problems and they have been downloading patches to fix it. I previously had Telstra model 2. Last week with one tech I was on the phone for 2.04hrs I have a record of all the calls and the problem has been going on for months. I even purchased a Telstra WiFi extender, which improves the signal when the internet is working, but I still have dead spots in a small two-bedroom house.
