I realise people are saying negative comments about this product. However, I caught a rat on my first use. And the company have since fixed the issue of one gap that was previously a problem. I’m very impressed as I have been trying to catch these rats with normal traps and they never worked. Show details

An expensive mistake. It triggers itself soon after I set it. The angle of the hook is wrong. Poor design. Show details

Rubbish – Door got jammed half way due to deformed runners for Door. I fixed the runners until Door opened and closed freely. Every morning trap checked and found it activated but nothing in it. I saw rats run over top of trap which caused the trap to spring closed Show details

Too sensitve and springs shut by itself with nothing near it!!! – waste of $42-00 BUT I then borrowed an old similiar trap ( but it was old and rusty) from a friend and it worked well. Looking at the difference the arm on mine is not at the right andle I seriously think its a fault in the manufacture. The old trap same design had the angle of the arm correct. Thank heavens I found the receipt. Taking mine… Read more

back to bunnings. I could set the trap and within 30 seconds to 15 min it slams shut nothing near the trap design fault!!!!!

Hopeless – The trap is much too sensitive. It keeps going off by itself and won't stay set for more than five seconds. I'm ready to throw my $42 product in the bin Show details

They Sometimes Escape – While I have successfully caught many rats in this, they can also escape. I have found them in the trap late at night and left them for humane release Kms away next day but in the morning the rat is no longer there so they obviously can somehow escape. I don't know how but I suspect the door spring is not strong enough and they can push it open as I can't see how the could squeeze through the mesh. Show details

I wish it worked – Hard to set without bruising your arm. Food bait was gone in peanut butter or apple without trap being set off on multiple occasions. Nothing caught. Another failed product by this brand. Also tried the Advanced electronic sonic repeller and baited mice stations, all products failed. Show details

Works with larger rats – Lighter weight (mice and small rats), can eat bait but not set off door, or can squeeze through the gaps. Out of 5 types the only one to catch rats. Show details

Happy to recommend – Observed rodent (rat) in my back yard. Used conventional traps without success. Purchased 'Big Cheese' rat cage trap from Bunnings. Carefully followed instructions. Caught first rodent (rat) on 3rd night, and second rodent (mouse) 8th night. A few months later I caught and humanly disposed of another 2 x rats. For now we are now rodent free. Note:… Read more

For bait I use small pieces of apple or carrot, and Big Cheese 'mouse & rate attractant'. I've also had success spreading some peanut butter onto cheese bait. Happy to recommend.

Hopeless waste of $$ – I have tried setting this trap in various positions around our house in accord with the instructions, and with various foods that I know rats love. Have been careful not to leave a human smell on it and set it exactly right. Despite this, not a single rat has been trapped - and I KNOW the beasties are nesting under our highest home. Sometimes it's been triggered, sometimes they even get the bait. Please don't waste your money! :-( Show details

Don't bother, just don't – This thing is a piece of excrement. So sensitive if you can actually set it it goes off every time a car goes past the house. The rat I want to catch sniffed the door and the trap went off. Burn your money instead it is less of a waste. Show details

Works, sort of. Not sure they are really welfare effective (humane) – Bought two of Big Cheese Rat Cage Traps (humane catcher), my review is written after on night of rat catching ops. I caught one rat. The second one, the bait was gone, and it had been triggered but there was no rat! The possibilities: 1. Rat eats bait, leaves, triggers from outside some how (experimentation shows it takes a good kick to trigger… Read more

from the outside).

2. Tiny rat or mouse triggers trap, small enough to fit through the bars

3. Rat triggers trap, is strong enough to pull open the door from the inside and squeeze underneath (smart rat!).

Observing the rat I caught and it's activity in the cage, 3 seems most likely.

Here is what the RSPCA has to say about them BTW, which I ready retrospectively, not sure they are really so humane: https://kb.rspca.org.au/knowledge-base/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-kill-pest-rats-and-mice/#live-traps
