I was gifted Lions Mane and Italian Oyster for Christmas. My excitement has turned to disappointment. The Lions Mane had Gnats, which I was told by Fun Guy that it couldn’t have come from them. I had no gnats in my home, or in my indoor plants. The Lions Mane never progressed at all. The Italian Oyster had a flush that had yellow gills and a… Read more

bad smell that made them inedible. No second flush. The base of the boxes disintegrated and smelt bad, leaking a yellow smelly liquid. I took them out of the boxes, but there was no sign of anything except a smelly compact of fiberous material. Waste of money! For $60 plus dollars I could’ve bought a huge amount of fresh mushrooms.

I received a Pink Oyster Mushroom Kit from Funguy as a Christmas gift and started it on 27 December 2025. I liked the concept and was genuinely looking forward to growing my own mushrooms. Unfortunately, my kit never reached the fruiting stage. Within a few days it developed a fermenting smell, followed by a strong unpleasant odour about a week… Read more

in. From very early on it attracted fruit flies, and eventually maggots appeared, making the kit unusable and requiring disposal. I followed the instructions carefully and wondered whether heat and humidity in south-east Queensland may have contributed, or whether the kit itself was compromised.

I contacted Funguy to explain the issue. Their response focused on mushrooms smelling after fruiting, which didn’t apply in my case, as no mushrooms ever developed. After clarifying this, I received no further response — no acknowledgement, apology, or offer of a replacement, refund, or credit.

The idea behind the product is good, but based on my experience and the lack of follow-up from customer service, I’d recommend that potential buyers — particularly in warmer, humid climates — proceed with caution or seek advice before purchasing.

I purchased a white oyster and a lion’s mane. It took 13 days for the white oyster mushroom to grow to its full size (no photo as it has been already harvested and digested) while lion mane is still growing. It is a great gift for any mushroom growing enthusiast.

Whilst these kits are amazing and fun to watch, they need to clearly warn people that they should be kept outdoors, or in a well-ventilated room and where you do not spend a lot of time. I was gifted the oyster mushroom growing kit and when the mushrooms open up - they release spores (our black kitchen bench turned white) which can get on the skin… Read more

and into your lungs and cause allergic reactions. Whilst rare, it does happen - and should be noted on the box! For more information on safely growing mushroom kits see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjaZ9fuU5NQ

This was bought for me as a gift and I it has brought me so much joy. Watching these grow over the last two weeks, taking photos, time-lapse videos, updating my friends, waking up to see how it's grown. So fun. I recommend even more if you have small kids as it goes fast and is exciting. Highly recommend as a gift or just for yourself. Harvesting our first crop today for a stir fry dinner. Hope to get another crop.

Not worth the price and outcome – Ordered 2 lions manes grow kits $69 for the 2. Instructions followed but I discovered online a more appropriate guide to how to spray and care for these kits + how to cut a small cross instead of the large cross as instructed by the Funguy. When the fruiting body began to grow it was the wrong colour (pink) indicating a possible over spraying (too… Read more

damp) and not adequate ventilation. I didn’t feel that the grow instructions were helpful enough and now with one fully grown mushroom which is still a pinkish apricot colour, I don’t feel confident enough to eat. Pink colour in these mushrooms from over spraying can indicate bacteria. I’ve conveyed all of this to the funguy team but they just stand by their instructions. Not very helpful.

Don't buy mushroom kits – We bought 2 mushroom kits from The Fun Guy. I put both boxes together in the same conditions, and watered both twice daily as per instructions. After 12 days, the first box erupted with a lovely bouquet of white mushrooms, as promised and expected! But the other box is dormant. I would love a replacement box, but The Fun Guy said that they… Read more

don't do refunds or replacements. Considering that the kits are in a box, it seems to me to be a good PR exercise and the right thing to do to send me another box. Makes for a very expensive way to buy mushrooms. I won't try mushroom farming again, and will be sure my friends and family don't bother either. Disappointing product, disappointing service.
