Thermann X Hybrid Heat Pump

Great most of the time (but some quality control issues) – This heat pump water heater works well when it works but there are clearly quality control issues which affect the operation of the unit in the Australian environment. This unit has failed twice - the first within the warranty period (a faulty seal and heating element) and the second just outside (but still covered by consumer law) being a faulty… Read more
sensor.
The good news is the service department is responsive and they have a local plumber who can get to the unit quickly. But make sure you have those contact details handy. The first time this unit failed, it took three days for my plumber and the plumbing wholesaler to track down how to get repairs under way.
Note that my unit is now five years old. I hope that the current generation has addressed the quality issues.
Noisy. Avoid – Noisy. Noisy. Noisy! Typing this at 4.30am after the heat pump on our new build yet again has woken us all.up. Reece says this is just how they are. Also dumps water all over ground from outlets (cement already stained) and have to run about 3L of water before hot comes out.. Reece also says this is normal. Will be replacing with a traditional electric hot water unit. Thanks for the money down the drain Reece. Show details
unit is performing well – So far so good, unit is performing well, hardly uses any electric and we have never run out of hot water even with 8 people visiting/ staying in our house. These are brilliant if sized correctly and installed correctly. I am a plumber and have installed this at my own property. We did away with the gas feed to our property as we have no demand for… Read more · 1
gas anymore. Highly recommended, so far no issues. I bought thermaan as I hope parts will be available in the 'long run' which I don't suspect will happen if you buy a cheap Chinese version
Would be a five-star but required a warranty repair – Unit installed mid 2022 and no problems at all until recently. Very efficient for our small household and has kept my power bill down. Unfortunately, there was a faulty electronic temperature control component. The handling of my warranty claim was very, very good. Fixed within 48hrs of my initial phone call. Great customer support (a rare thing nowadays). Thanks also to the diligent technician. Happy to recommend. Show details · 2
Works great when it actually works – This unit was put in my new build in late 2018. The first break down was 2021 (rubber ring issue), march 2023 (computer replacement and tpr valve) and again oct 2023 (element boost replacement) and AGAIN dec 2023 (BOTH sensors replaced). 3 MAJOR breakdowns and issues in 1 year is alot for a $4,000 unit. My front neighbor has the 330 unit and have… Read more
had 4 repairs so far.
I do not recommend this unit. I am lucky to have contact with Reece's hot water pump plumber so my repairs are done within a few days.

When it works, it works well. BUT it is not reliable – The unit was installed, and first turned on in May 2020. It failed for the first time later that year, The service tech came out promptly, tested the unit, I believe he replaced something, and reflashed the software to Stiebel Eltron software (the unit is a Stiebel Eltron rebadged). In recent months the unit just stops working, with no fault… Read more
light. I lodged a warranty request via Reece in Ballarat, and was then contact two days later by Stiebel Eltron support, who asked me to keep restarting the unit, and to contact them once we had a fault light. We have now been restarting the unit for about a month, and still no fault light. I have again lodged a request for the unit to be repaired under warranty, and am now waiting for Stiebel Eltron support. The concept of a heat pump water heater is great, but these early units appear to be experiencing a few problems, and the companies are not providing the support I expect when purchasing a high priced unit like this.

Buyer beware - PCB replaced multiple times & booster element x2 – Unit purchased in August 2019 from Service Today (SA) (who have been great in actioning the warranty requests). As of today, 6 July 2023, we are without hot water and the service technician has been out 3x in the last two weeks. Also, the service tech cannot come until tomorrow mid-day, “best case” which if not, will be next week! Issues have… Read more
consistently been between June - September (cooler months with high humidity/rain). The unit is mostly sheltered with extra protection over the top as Stiebel stated there was standing water inside the top part of the unit when the faults occur. Usually, the first indication of an issue is the red fault light is on or there is no hot water. Sometimes, if I cycle the unit (turn it off for a minute and back on), it will work, but will ultimately fail again within twelve hours.
I will be filing a notice with the ACCC tomorrow if this is not resolved by Stiebel - it needs to be replaced with a new, functioning unit of the same capacity.

noise level – Replaced a noisy Rheem hot water system with what I was guaranteed by a local plumber was one of the quietest on the market, I had not found any reviews on the Thermann prior to the purchase. Seems to be a good product so far, the only complaint is the noise level which drones through our home, would have gone solar instead. In high density… Read more

Efficient but has had some reliability issues – Installed September 2019 and has broken down twice. Electronic side appears to be the unreliable component of what seems to be an otherwise good product. Thermann have been good with repairs out of warranty. Show details · 1

You have been warned – High expectations for this German heat pump that have been crushed with 3 system failures in 3.5 years. Installed for our new build in February 2019, first service call Dec 2020 - element replaced. Second service call December 2021 - faulty unit replaced with new unit. Third service call Nov 2022 - element on new unit replaced. Update: Originally… Read more

A few years in and still working perfectly – We bought this unit after our Gas Storage System failed. The Thermann X is a great Hot Water Heater. We have a family of 5 and have never run out of hot water. Currently set to run whenever it needs to but will be changing to run only when Solar is Generating Electricity. Anyone done this? Terrible. 4 years and now defunct – High demand not great, can use boost to help. Main warranty on refrigeration system terrible.. 2 years for compressor, evaporator, valves and electrical components. Unit has been average since purchased, after 4 years with only 2 adults now completely defunct with no warranty etc to help. About to seek ACCC case lodgement. No reg service… Read more
technician with 2.5 hrs of point of sale. NEVER AGAIN!!! Thankfully there was one person from Therman x that I have been in contact with who has sought to provide me reasonable resolution in this case, due to extenuating circumstances. Has still cost me nearly $400 in diagnostic bills plus installation fee for a new unit. Case has been deferred with ACCC. Am hoping this unit will last longer. Should never have had to have gone this far.

Know better, choose better.
Faulty unit keeps breaking down – Installed in a new house build December 2018. It has been serviced/fixed 5 times since installation. It has had parts replaced each time and the service agent stated they are a poor unit as they have to attend to many complaints with these units. When it works is a good unit but should NOT have to have it fixed this many times. Would definitely steer clear of buying this model. Show details

Effective and efficient hot water system – Hard to evaluate as it is used conjointly with two quantum systems. Therefore there over 900 litres of hot water to service 7 motel rooms. Only ever ran out , when the unit tripped the circuit breaker. Show details · 1
Efficient but unreliable – My unit is cheap to run but needs fixing about once per year, which is disappointing for an expensive hot water system. There’s a lack of plumbers with the right gear to fix it to and when you do get hold of one they mention that the faulty parts are a common design issue for the units. Show details

can I arrange this through the Vic Gov rebate scheme? – I am planning to replace my existing hot water tank and would like to know more about this unit. Is it available through the Gov Rebate scheme. We currently have a Rheem 101 Series 230 litre. thanks Show reply
