Volkswagen Scirocco 1S (2011-2016)

A little too-much of a blonde – Bought a demo DSG model with 8k on the clock. Have added 35k in 2 and a half years. DSG not my preferred transmission as Manual is for me, the optimal way to experience a car especially with a good amount of power such as this. DSG is a nanny and in semi-manual mode still restricts the freedom to downshift when you want and this takes away from… Read more
the driving thrill, which this car does deliver on when taking on a nice twisty bit of road, but its not as engaging as a manual- I can compare as I have a Mk 6 Golf GTI manual and its my preferred car by a long, long way- same chassis and though less power, its an intuitive drive and makes me smile such are its engaging reflexes. Build quality is very good as is the engineering. VW build a good car and these two in my garage take my total over the years to 12 ranging from Beetles (3), Polo (1) Passats (2) and Golf's (5). Rear view is lousy and access for any poor sod taller than 5 ft is inelegant, though rarely an event in my vehicle. Would I buy another? No. I'll be trading it soon for a Golf R (Manual) and won't bemoan the absence of the DSG.
Fantastic car – This is my 4th VW. Ive owned a GTI and 2 R32s. All were fantastic and with DSG gearboxes that never skipped a beat because if they're correctly serviced when needed you shouldn't run into dramas. After a brief Italian hiatus, I was drawn to buy another VW and this time a Scirocco as I couldn't see myself with another golf. I absolutely love… Read more
the looks of this car, the build quality and ride is all superb. I feel it has a wider and more planted stance than my golfs and while it isn't AWD like a Golf R, the drive feels far more engaging. Boot size is decent for its size and really is a pragmatic car that can be very relaxed and comfortable for daily driving that can become very spirited when it needs to be.
Servicing hasn't been expensive and the cloth/alcantara seats I thought I'd dislike I actually prefer over the leather. They're much more comfortable and easy to live with especially if parked in the sun.
Definitely has been my favourite VW of all time, wish they would bring out another.
My favourite car thus far – Good car, people love it visually. Definitely a better alternative than the golf. But that DSG gearbox. I was warned about it earlier but I ignored. Now issues are arising with it and it may cost me a fair bit. Look into the DSG gear box before purchasing. Other than that, its the nicest. car I've owned Show details
Massive Upgrade from my Ford – The driving experience is amazing - instant acceleration! Whereas, my previous ford fiesta jittered every time I made a hasty press on the gas. Handling is perfect, sports mode is tight especially around corners - very impressed the first time I used it. As expected, runs high on petrol - 98 is a must. Interior looks gorgeous, very sporty.… Read more
However, when riding as a passenger at the back gives a claustrophobic feel as the windows are smaller at the back (understandable as it's a two door vehicle). I've gotten comments that its difficult getting out from the back seat due to the low roof. Legroom is sufficient, though. Only main issue is the technology is lacking for the (already expensive) price of the car, you've got to pay a much more significant price for heated seats, sunroof etc.
Overall, it's a great car. Very reliable, haven't had a single mechanical issue yet.
Fantastic vehicle. Love it – Vehicle is a limited edition 2016 (MY17) Volkswagen Scirocco R Wolfsburg. I went for Oryx white colour and the 6 speed manual instead of the DSG and also ticked yes for the only other option available - the panoramic sunroof, The Wolfsburg is a limited edition of 150 vehicles as a final 'send off' to the Scirocco, which will no longer be sold… Read more
in Australia once these are gone. It has some features not available in any other Scirocco's; Leather / alcantara race seats, keyless entry & push button start/stop, premium multi-function dashboard display and exclusive 19 inch wheels. I have previously owned a VW Jetta with the 6 speed DSG auto mated to the 147Kw/280nm turbo petrol engine, and it was a great combination... although the DSG could sometimes be caught out by it choosing to drop down 1 too many gears with sudden acceleration. I did over 120,000k's in the Jetta without any issues. The 6 speed manual of the Scirocco R Wolfsburg is an absolute cracker. Gear shifts are smooth and the clutch is not overly light nor heavy. The turbo in the 188kw/330nm engine comes on boost just over 2000rpm so there is hardly any of the lag often attributed to this type of powerplant. Cruising @ 110km/hr in 6th gear will see the engine sitting around 2500rpm. The car has an electronically limited top speed of 250km/hr. Real world fuel economy is around 8.5L per 100km. In the high 6's - low7's on a trip and closer to 10 if you do a lot of stop-start city driving and like to zip around. It came fitted with Pirelli P Zero 235/35/R19 tyres and they are sensational. Very quiet and smooth, and grip like nothing I've ever experienced before. Too early to say how long they will last as car has only done 1400km. The race seats are VERY heavily bolstered.... and will not suit larger framed people. Anyone over 85-90kg may struggle and not find them comfortable. Seat travel for tall people is not an issue. The suspension has 3 settings; Comfort, Normal and Sport. In my opinion all the suspension settings are all reasonably firm, but you can definitely feel the difference between them as you switch between them whilst moving. Just don't expect the comfort setting to be soft like... say.... a BMW 5 series. Servicing is every 12months/15,000kms and is covered by VW capped priced service offer. The air-con is like a freezer which is great for Oz summers. The sat-nav is easy to use and very intuitive.
The only gripe i have is a small one and it's that the race seats do not automatically slide forward (as is the norm) when you tilt the seats to gain access to the rear seating. You need to also use the lever under the front of the seat and slide it forward..... overall a minor inconvenience in an otherwise awesome looking car.
Very good; but not excellent – This is seriously a very good car. The engine purs and the exhaust rumbles; people love it. The DSG gearbox is a brilliant piece of engineering. It's not an 'automatic' gearbox with a torque converter that clunks into drive. The DSG has two clutch plates and feels like a manual geabox only the shifting is done automatically. Sports mode is… Read more
sensational! It has a manual mode and the paddles behind the steering wheel. The doors are a bit heavy to operate, but once you learn to work with them they are fine. With the slightest touch they will close by themselves. And they sound solid. I love the look of the dash, especially the dials.
Now the things I'm less happy with. The mirros don't have an automatic fold-in setting and there's no memory for the mirror position so each driver has to manually adjust them plus the seats are manual as well. Leg distance is easy but adjusting the tilt of the back is arduous. There's a button on the steering wheel that has a microphone on it. I believe the early models had a voice activation system which was canned because it didn't work properly, so why is the button still there? This is supposed to be their top of the line sports car!
The nav systems works well when it has the street listed in its database, but I've lost count of the number of times it can't find a street which is 20 y.o. or more! The bluetooth works well so i just use google maps on my HTC. I asked VW to update the maps given the age of the maps. They didn't and silly me forgot to check on them before I drove away. :(
Previously I said the engine purs, and it does, but the turbo lag is sooo bad it almost unforgiveable!! It's a sports car right?? You think you car safely dart in front of an oncoming car?? Think again. What you get is 1 1/2 seconds of baaad turbo lag followed by 1 second of sensational exceleration and the symphony of engine noise followed by uncontrollable front wheel spin!! Forget (safely) dragging at the lights 'cause it ain't gonna happen the way you think it should. Having said this, on a race track where there is no stop-start, the engine/gearbox combination is simply the 2nd best I have ever used. 1st place goes the the now 15yo Honda S2000. I get lows 8's/100km on highway. High 9's in the city and add another 20% if you give it some stick :) Tubo lag, sat nav
