Mould Grew within a month – Not mould resistant at all. Mould Grew within a month, and after 4 months the coat was gone in traffic areas. Rubbish, I will never use water-based again. Show details

Worst product on the market didn't even last 6 weeks – 4 coats of oil lasted less than 6 weeks, and just washed off when it rained. Deck is wrecked where exposed to weather. I will never buy another wattyl product. Show details

It's the best one I've used – Merbau deck. Applied two coats with 50mm brush (gets between boards) 1 week apart. Then lightly sanded by hand to smooth it. Then did a third coat. Do a few boards then use a rag while wet to smooth it. Beautiful job and came up like a dance floor. Show details

Only lasted 3 months (no cover) & 6 months under cover – Brand new Silvertop Ash decking and I let it weather for approximately 5 months and it was gorgeous alone without any oil and free from tanning. 2 oil coats with a day interval in between for drying. The first coat was a warm day and I applied the 30m2 around 6.30am and it didn't see sun until 11am. Let it dried for the day, and reapplied the… Read more

following day at 7am on a 24 degree day.

Did not step on it as we went away for a holiday for a week. Returned and not a single drop of rain. The application was beautiful and it looks gorgeous but March 2021 it was completely gone.

Anyways, long story short. I could've expected this to last much longer, least till winter without having to apply every 6 months or so which is a pain because if I was to change oil type now, I would need to strip and sand the entire deck back and reapply new oil which alone is another headache. I'm sorry but i wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Brilliant and best value for money – Best oil on the market from what I’ve seen so far, but only if you know the correct application! Preparation means everything! Natural oil finish is a bit average as with all natural oil finishes, however merbau oil was perfect ! Applied to a clients deck 3 coats and came up FLAWLESS. Glossy and beautiful rich finish. … Read more

Sincerely one happy trade painter :)

Normal 4-6 hour touch dry, but best to wait a day before coating again.

Applied to a clients deck.

3 coats of oil and it’s flawless

All round good decking oil and value for money

Very poor result – Last year and this year the local Floor Sander and Polisher has sanded and polished 57m of my deck with two coats of Wattyl decking oil Both occasions produced a dreadful result The screws were redrilled and countersunk at an additional cost and the deck is back to bare boards and dull This has been costly and most disappointing The… Read more

The worst product ever used – I am a fully qualified painter and decorator and I used this product on my decking, Merbau timber. Let the timber weathered for 8 weeks and washed it through all this time, washed and prepared the timber again with Integrain power prep and reviva as Crowies staff said. After all this procedure used Wattyl Weathergard Prodeck as a protective… Read more

coating which states that will last 3x longer then any other traditional decking oil. I did 2 coats wet on wet and a 3rd coat 24 hours later. The product did not survived 3 weeks what a dissaster. It started faddin and lost the water repellantcy. Contacted wattyl and explained what happened and they started blaming the timber.3 weeks ago I applied another 2 coats and the product stopped repelling water after 10 days . Contacted Wattyl again and had they representative to come over and have a look even he could not believe what he saw. The only thing that they can do is to refund me the money of the product and I have to do the hole job again. Will never buy Wattyl products anymore .

Worst product ever – Used on large deck with balastrades. Started with the sides and followed all instructions, but the product is so watery that it was impossible to stop runs or drops of stain on the main deck. This product will not cover up any of these imperfections. The main deck showed signs of fading , where the shadow of the sides showed through. Second coat did not improve the overall look. Very disappointed. Show details

Excellent result – I have recently been struggling with my covered merbau deck which had been finished in a water based product. The deck had no attention for ten years. So the deck is weathered in some places from rain and sun. In the more sheltered areas there are pot marks, an a few perfect bits. I researched, I had wattyl deck oil in the garage in merbau, I… Read more

tried it on the outside of the deck and I wasn't happy with the color. Long story -sanding, used Feast Watson natural with variable success, very dull finish, and different colors on the deck. I decided to try a second coat of wattyl and it was much better. The wattyl deck oil has a nice sheen and it seems to have brought all the areas together in a more unified result. It is not perfect but as I wanted to be still able to see the timber grain, I am happy with it. 2coats applied

Went on fine, only suitable for undercover use! – The colour (natural) and application was fine on merbau, it was a cooler day and the deck was prepared properly. The second coat was wet on wet which made it intersting doing a large deck. However, the edge of my patio is exposed to direct sunlight (about 40mm) and was sun bleached within 2 weeks. The undercover area after 6 months still looks good and would recommend to use it for covered purposes or know it will bleach quickly.  Show details

The Best Decking Oil – Wattyl Decking Oil is easy to use and handles the elements very well. Where we live the temperature range can be from -7 to mid 40's C which can be rather severe on paint surfaces. We re coat our deck each year, our deck is now 14 year old and looks as good now as it did the day it was first installed. In winter we try to remove any excess… Read more

Meticulous preparation and care but poor longevity – Took advice from the good people at Masters (yes I know). Applied 3 coats originally to new but weathered per instructions, last only a few months. Complained to Masters they were going to get the representative to call us that was 3 years ago. Like a fool we bought more to try again in case it was something we were doing so another 3 coats. Same… Read more

result. Complained again to Masters and yes the rep' story was trotted out again. 3rd attempt and yet again same result. You be the judge. Absolute garbage product in you want genuine protection.

Big Fan – Tried Cabots and Sikkens but Wattyl Weatherguard comes up trumps! Jarrah decking - the colours the oil brings out are amazing. It is very easy to apply; I used brush for edges and deck applicator for the rest. I had orange peeling going on but I suspect It was down to my preparation and the thickness I applied the oil. Not going to use anything else.  Show details

This product is crap – Applied three coats of Weathergard to a new deck of celery pine. It looked fantastic at first but after the first autum rain it soon started to get a black tinge from mould. Cleaned with hypo but it was soon back. Complained at the hardware store and asked to see the wattle rep the next time he was in town. Still waiting after 6 months. Will not use again.  Show details

Tried everything - Wattyl oil based is way the best. Cabots waterbased is the worst – Great result, nice sheen ..goes on easy. I have over 300m2 of decking in 4 properties..some merbau and some pine. My pine was warping when it rained after using waterbased products. I use either flat pads or a big $5 deck brush (bit more economical useage and joint coverage). I use glad wrap to cover trays and wrap brushes between coats (cover the… Read more

lot with an old towel. When finished I throw the applicators out..can't be bothered cleaning. Colour can look uneven when you are applying it but it dries even. Dries tough but you need to let it dry properly for a few days before replacing sharp stuff e.g furniture or pots. Two good coats are enough. Been on for 4 weeks and had heaps of rain...no more warping... Yahoo!! Tip ..cheaper option is to buy nappysan to prep/clean wood...works great.

Wattyl ProDeck coating issues – The new Wattyl ProDeck water wash up decking oil. This product has a water repellent added to it,to as you would expext, repel water. Well guess what, the product will repel itself between first & second coats if full sun lands on it before second coat is applied, similar to water repelling off silicon, meaning second coat does not penetrate and… Read more

beads on the surface.

This product however can be applied wet over wet which will avoid the problem, but if you have a really hot sunny day watch out.

I am a qualified painter I prepared the deck well beyond what was required on the label.

Great product and result! – For my Merbau timber deck I have chosen to use an oil based product because I want a product that penetrates the timber and not just coat the surface as acrylic water based products do. My timber deck is an uncovered area that gets late morning to mid afternoon sunlight during summer. This results in more maintenance for me than someone with a… Read more

covered deck area.

To clean timber surfaces I use a napisan solution (2 cups in a bucket of water) but if you have black tannin type stains I'd recommend using an oxylic acid based cleaner instead. I recently cleaned the timber deck which was oiled about 12 months ago using napisan solution but found this wasn’t enough to remove the grime. I ended up using the water pressure hose to clean and got a much better result. Word of advice - don’t have the pressure hose to close to the timber surface otherwise it damages the top timber fibres.

I had previously used the Wattyl Decking Oil – Natural product on some timber furniture and was very happy with the result. It has a reddish-brown tint, is easy to mix and completely dries to a low sheen finish due to tung oil contained in the product. After cleaning my timber deck and waiting for it to completely dry I applied the oil using a lamb’s wool brush applicator. The first coat went on easily and I could see the natural tint was a perfect match for the Merbau timber. The first coat was touch dry in a few hours but I waited the required 24 hours before applying the second coat. After 24 hours the decking oil dried to a beautiful low sheen finish which was perfectly dry to touch.

As with most oil based products there was some odour but this dissipated over a few days. I had checked the MSD Sheet for the Wattyl product and found it was a similar composition to the other leading brands. And by the way, this Wattyl product is available at Masters not the other hardware store beginning with “B”.
