This is a horrible oven - thank god it's discontinued – same issues as other reviewers regarding the hotplates - replacing the simmerstats fixed that. the front door of the oven gets EXTREMELY hot when it's on - enough to burn an adult's hand. the oven also take a rediculous amount of time to heat up and cooks extremely unevenly. the only good thing about the oven is the location of the knobs - they can't easily be reached by young children. Show details

Fantastic cooker – This cooker offers efficient even cooking. The hotplates heat up and cool down quickly. The oven heats up quite quickly too and cooks food evenly. It is neat and compact. Easy to clean. Show details

Your service STINKs. coils blew up – One of the wire heater coils blew up so I purchased a new coil and got an electrician in ti swap the coils over. He was unable to do so. I rang SUPPORT? and asked for a diagram of how to lift the stove top but was told NO and that I would have to get an electrolux electrician from a town 65 kilometrers away to come and fix it. Happy to use – The stove looks great. It is very functional and has lots of appeal with the grill being separate from the stove. I am delighted that there is a separate handle to pull the grill tray out with. I won't be getting my hands burned like I did with my old stove forgetting or not finding an oven mitt. Also they got it right with the oven cooking… Read more

element now on the top. Easy, easy to clean and far more effective for cooking in half the amount of time. Wonderful to see the knobs at the back too; so little visitors will not be tempted to touch them. All in all a good rounded stove. Easy to clean, high gloss finish, heats fast Maybe a more expensive stove to run

Stove not very good – Not very happy at all. Have complained to westinghouse about my stove and nothing was done. The element out of the oven was all bent up when it blows and nobody can tell me why. Plus not long after we purchased the stove the red indicator lights broke off. The one we had before this lasted over 40 years.  Show details

Indicator lamp covers crumble – There are three red indicator lamps on the control panel of the PAK143W. I believe these are common to other makes and models. I recently purchased a second hand oven to replace the one in our rental property. On both the original and replacement stove some of the light covers were broken. They are a red translucent tube about 3mm wide and 15mm… Read more

long. I had hoped to salvage three useable light covers between the two, but, sadly they all suffer from the same problem in that they are brittle and crumble easily. Hoping they would be an inexpensive item, I checked online and then by phone with a local appliance part supplier. I confirmed what appeared to be the case online, that, although the cover is designed to come off and is even shown detached in the parts photo, the customer is required to buy the entire light complete with wiring in order to get the red plastic cover. Price $14.99. I need two at this stage but would have bought 3 or more (for spares), had they been a dollar or two, as you would expect. When I made my phone inquiry, I was not surprised when the helpful lady on the phone told me she was aware of the problem and I was one of many that had had the same problem and was not impressed. She said what I had been thinking, that is that there was an opportunity there for an enterprising person to have a bunch made, for probably cents each and sell them for a couple of dollars. I suggested that they, as parts suppliers should be doing that themselves. I am hoping to come up with a DIY or improvised solution, maybe something from an electronics store, but am not hopeful. I resent buying 2 or 3 lights at $30 to $45 when all I need is a a dollar or two worth of plastic. Any help from Westinghouse, I wonder?

Poor quality but fixable – I inherited this cooker from a rental unit, so as you can imagine it was given the ultimate treatment... When I got it, four out of the five cooking units were useless, they were either full on or full off. So you could have your food either burned or uncooked. (The five cooking units I am referring to are the four top elements plus the grill; the… Read more

oven uses a quite different control unit and actually worked OK.)

The solution is simply to swap out the control units for each element. They are called "simmerstats" (codename MP101) and can be purchased in an electrical hardware store such as Hayman's for around $30 each or online for as little as $15 each. Swapping them out is quite simple and involves unscrewing the cooker's back plates (after disconnecting all power, obviously), pulling off the front knob, loosening the old simmerstat by unscrewing the nut on the front panel, pulling out each electrical connection from the old simmerstat and plugging it into the corresponding tab on the new simmerstat, resecuring the new simmerstat onto the panel and replacing the back plates and knob. But beware of the possibility that the new simmerstat you buy may have a different tab configuration to your original defective simmerstat. They are normally labelled clearly (Load, Phase, Neutral and Pilot) but may be in a different layout to the original. Therefore this task should only be undertaken by a qualified electrician...

Westinghouse ovens in our other main kitchen and they have never had an issue. These particular ovens in this review need a recall. When reading all these reviews I realise I am not over reacting and this is not our problem but the company's'. I have contacted the company through email and was quoted a charge of $145 for the 1st 3rd 5th and 7th oven and a further 70 for the 2nd 4th and 6th ovens ....$790 for a problem that is far from being our fault. These teachers having been cooking for years in many different kitchens and ovens....never before have they come across this. I will get back on here once we see what the serviceman has to say.

Twice Bitten, Enough Is Enough – Focus on being factual and objective. This being said on the review page, I will only cover the good points of this stove. Sorry, there are none. We rented a house for 5 odd years where this model was fitted into a brand new house. After several burnt offerings that turned the wife off cooking, we found the door of the oven never closed properly… Read more

letting out the heat at the top and scorching the cupboards either side. Called the real estate and their sparkie said the hinges of the door were bent. Making us responsible for the issue. (We had only used the door in the same manner as any other oven and our kids were old enough to know you do not use the door as a trampoline). The large element destroyed some of our pots so we learnt never to use it. After a while the other elements started to lock on full intermittently. As the house was a rental, we had no choice of replacing it.

1 year ago, we managed to buy a house. Seeing it had the same stove, we figured that it could not be a lemon as the last one. We were happy to buy the house with the view that as we would be upgrading to a split wall oven and cooktop in the future, How wrong we were. This oven is just as bad so we will be changing it out a lot sooner than planed. So disappointed in this brand and model.

The oven in the Westinghouse 143 is utter ****! – When we built our home 20-something years ago, we installed a Westinghouse Avondale free-standing stove. I absolutely loved the stove, particularly the fan-forced oven. It was very rare that anything burned and if it did it was almost always my error - like forgetting to drop the temperature back or to set the timer. I was so impressed with my… Read more

Avondale I recommended my grandparents buy one when they replaced their stove. Theirs is still working like a dream.

Unfortunately, we needed to replace the large element which had stopped working. The serviceman was happy to replace the dead element but pointed out that the wiring in the rest of the stove had become old and brittle and that it was probably safer and more cost effective to replace the whole stove. He explained that living in the harsh tropical climate does accelerates the deterioration of wiring. I reluctantly said goodbye to our old stove and bought another Westinghouse believing they were great products. We have a 16 year old Westinghouse fridge that has never missed a beat.

Since we are planning to renovate our kitchen in the next couple of years and probably will opt for separate grill/oven and cooktop rather than a free-standing stove, we decided to buy a lower spec Westinghouse for the interim. After all, the last Westinghouse was so wonderfully reliable. OH MY GOD, what the heck was I thinking.

You know, I can live without the digital clock, a timer that actually has a range of more than one hour and actually goes off/works at the appointed time, a stove top that lifts for easy access for cleaning and lights indicating that the stove is on that don't pop into the back of the stove never to be seen again. I have work-arounds for these minor issues, after all, this stove is short term and it was a base model. But what I can't live with is this (insert expletive here) oven that has ruined more food than the stove is worth. Like other reviewers' experiences, this oven wrecks everything that I attempt to cook. It burns the bottom and fails to properly cook the top unless I cook everything above the middle shelf height and at 150 degrees or less. Then of course, it takes almost twice as long to cook. If I cook on two shelves, like when baking biscuits, I have to swap shelves half way through even when cooking at only 150-160! Forget cooking roasts, I don't even attempt them anymore.

Not one to give up easily, I tried cooking on the top shelf and placing a biscuit tray on the shelf underneath to dissipate the heat coming from the element at the bottom. Of course, this only works at temperatures of less than 160. Any higher temperature and the 'sacrificial' biscuit tray smells like it will spontaneously combust! Of course, having this 'sacrificial' shelf, means half the cooking capacity so I priced an additional shelf/rack at a local electrical supplier. That'll be $60 thank you very much - I politely declined.

I wholeheartedly agree with other posters on this site, this oven is a NIGHTMARE and is damaging the otherwise good Westinghouse name. We won't be buying another Westinghouse, it's not worth the risk.
