My 94 yr old neighbour has the problem with the water collecting in the bottom of his WTB3400, fridge under the crisper. I've been over to his place to try and sort out the problem. The fridge is only about 2 yrs old. The drain tray at the rear is dry, and it's extremely difficult to see how the condensation drains into the tray. I suspect the drain is simply an internal passageway inside the insulation at the back of the fridge. There is no removable back to the fridge as a technician on Just Answer says there is.

I did find a small white plastic plug projecting from the underside of the fridge above the drip tray, and this plug has a black rubber insert with tiny flaps cut in it, that appears to allow drainage. The plastic plug could only be connected to any possible drainage hole, if that hole that runs inside the fridge stryrofoam insulation. But the actual method of drainage is hidden to all but those with a fridge design diagram.

I took off the plastic cover inside the rear of the fridge cabinet (you pull out the clear plastic cover over the light, and there's a single Phillips-head screw holding the plastic cover on). Pull the plastic cover out from the bottom, there's two plastic clips right at the top front of the cover that also hold it in place. These are easily pulled out with a rearwards movement.

However, removing this cover doesn't add anything to my knowledge about how the fridge condensation drainage system works. There's no holes in the back of the cabinet that I can see - although, right at the bottom of the recess behind the plastic cover, there's two indentations, that may have drain holes in them, that wouldn't be visible unless you had a mirror - because they may be on the inside edge of the indentations.

I checked the door seal for food particles that might be caught in it that could cause condensation build up in the bottom of the fridge, and found very little. I suspect the internal drain hole is blocked, but it's impossible to find where it runs, or how to find out if it's blocked.

We cleaned the fridge right out, checked it for level (it's all good), and we'll check it again in few days to see if water is building up again in the bottom. But I don't think we've actually found the drainage problem.

O.K. - an update. We found the water pooling problem returned again the next day, so I followed Oisin's advice - and the advice of a refrigeration repairman. I emptied and unplugged the fridge (of course, you need to find another fridge or a friend with a spare empty fridge to do this), and left it for 24 hrs, until the fridge was completely warm.

Then, the next day, I poured hot water through the vents at the back of the freezer compartment until water started to appear in the drip tray. After that, I plugged the fridge in again and refilled it, and the water pooling problem stopped.

It seems the drain passageway to the drip tray (which is built into the fridge styrofoam cabinet) is either not quite big enough - or the small rubber plug on the bottom of the cabinet above the drip tray - stops the drain flow occasionally, and then the water in the drain passageway freezes, and the drain blocks up.

The solution above works, and is simple, but it means taking the fridge out of use for 24 hrs, which can be a major inconvenience if you have no refrigeration backup.

Also having issue with pool of water forming at bottom of fridge. Also can't locate the drain hole and thinking it may be behind airflow/light panel at back (inside fridge). Doesn't pull off easily so unsure if could easily damage it. Can anyone confirm where the drain hole is located?

Same issue, would have hoped someone has the answer

Oisin

I managed to resolve my issue and would recommend trying this. From underneath the back of the fridge you should be able to see see a drip tray. There is a small end of a tube above it. My drip tray was completely dry so I then knew the pipe to the drip tray was blocked/frozen. I unplugged the fridge and poured hot water through the gap at the back of the top freezer. After about 15 minutes I the pipe at the back started dripping water again so I knew it had been frozen and was now defrosted. Turned my freezer temperature slightly up and haven’t had the issue since.

Yes, this fix works, and I was advised to do this by a fridge repairman. The drain passageway is built into the fridge cabinet, in the styrofoam insulation. The only access to the drain passageway is via the vents at the back of the freezer cabinet, and at the drain plug directly above the drip tray.

I too seem to have the same problem with water pooling on the floor in front of the fridge door, yet cannot find where it is coming from. Purchased 6 years ago without a problem until now. Can anyone help?

We keep getting water under the crisper and somtimes small ice particles. We have adjusted the temp controls to colder and warmer. We are also getting moisture on the fridge where the rubber seal closes onto. Our fridge is only 4 years old and this also happend around 2 years ago but righted itself. We are in Townsville in North Queensland. Any sugestions? Thanks

My Westinghouse fridge is 2.5 years old and has worked perfectly. Your problem may be due to poor settings (doe not sound like this) or it may be a fault. A poor seal may be the reason for the ice and water. Try washing the seal and corresponding metal with warm soapy water, rinsing thoroughly.

The warranty under Australian Consumer Law is with the trader, where you bought the fridge. However, it would be simpler to contact Westinghouse and seek their advice. A friendly approach is always best at the outset. You need to advise Westinghouse where you bought the fridge and when. I'd start with an email, a bit easier for giving the facts and getting the right Westinghouse area.

Hi Ray, were you able to fix the problem? We got the same model (still not 4 years old), and started to notice the same in the morning for couple of days now. There seems no moisture around the seal, however ice had build up at the corner just above the crisper and sometimes small ice particles above the crisper. Adjusting the temp controls didn't fix it and the levelling is fine too.

Thanks.

I posted the issue online through the customer care center and they took 4 days to reply back. In the meantime, had to be on the phone more than an hour to speak to someone, just to be hung up at the end. Requested a callback and was told to go ahead with an Electrolux technician booking.

The technician who visited us was very good and quickly fixed the issue. There was a block on the drain pipe which caused the water to go through the cooling vents to collect under the crisper. A small block is enough to cause ice building up on top it to block the entire drain line.

Being out of warranty, the technician call out costed $155. Not super impressive having to deal with such an issue within 4 years and the poor responsiveness from Electrolux overall.

Hello. We have the same problem with our 2.5 year old fridge. Water keeps appearing under the vegetable crisper. I was wondering if we could fix the problem ourselves but we can't find the drain pipe. Is it somewhere inside the fridge where an amateur could find and fix it or is it a repair that only a fridge expert could fix? Money is tight so if we could solve the problem ourselves it would help!

Rene P

did anyone get back to you? we have same issue and thinking drain pipe is behind airflow/light panel at back (inside) fridge .. but cant find anything online to confirm this and unsure if should pull at it to remove, in case breaks! (thinking it just clips on though??) the pan/grey bucket thing at back of fridge (on the outside) is bone dry so must be a blocked drain. we live rural and there is no fridge repair place/person within 120kms. PS I've found putting a folded hand towel on the shelf bit behind the crisper just under the glass shelf above is helping to stop it leak out onto floor!

fridge not cooling enough everything started defrosting in freezer. What could be the problem. Made a funny noise on Thursday. I went away for the weekend, came back on sunday to find the back of the fridge hot and items in freezer defrosting. The fridge will not get cold enough, just cool. What do I do?

Grommet
Grommet

Ozgirl, if the fridge was purchased within the last 10 years then it is within the ATO lifespan external link  Hence, provided that you have done nothing bad to the fridge it should be covered by Australian Consumer Law. Section 54 provides that goods must be of a certain quality, fit for the purpose, free from defects, safe and durable. Under the ACL, consumers can seek a refund, replacement or repairs if a supplier fails to satisfy its obligations in relation to consumer guarantees.

Find the receipt or a credit card transaction record and approach the retailer, who has the contract with you. Be friendly and explain things nicely. At the same time approach Westinghouse and ask what might be wrong. My best guess is that the compressor has died.

The outside back of the fridge should be dusted as dust wrecks the cooling coils - if they are exposed. Maybe eat the food before it goes off. I can assist!

Ozgirl

Hi, thanks for the information. I haven't cleaned the coils. The fridge only has an opening down the bottom of the back so I will check them.

Can the ice tray brackets be removed?

Grommet
Grommet

I've been away, hence the delay in replying. As far as I can see the bracket cannot be removed. I use the singular "bracket" as it's one piece that holds the top tray (little containers for the water, not sure of the name) and the tray underneath that catches the solid cubes. I take both out to get the ice from the top into the bottom. The top part turns over but invariably some cubes stay in the top, so it's easier to get the cubes out on the kitchen counter. After a few minutes upside down most cubes fall out. The rest are tapped lightly with a spoon. Do not use a hammer.

You put the water in the cubes and place them in the slot provided in the freezer. When the ice is made, you turn the dials and it deposits the ice cubes in the tray below. No switch required!!
