I bought a new SMEG oven from Whitfords Home Appliances – I needed to replace the old SMEG oven in my apartment and didn't know what to do about the fact that every brand had a different size, and as this was a wall oven, it had to fit the cavity. Having shopped around the major appliance stores and even an oven repairer, I asked how to resolve this. My concerns were brushed aside. I was told that my installer would know how to adapt the cavity to the oven size. That's a lot of words which mean crap.

I went to Whitfords at Five Dock last, as they say. Their answer was stating the obvious. My old oven was a 20 year-old SMEG oven and SMEG never change the size of their wall ovens. I could pick any SMEG oven from their range and it would fit with no special installation required. I was still concerned because my existing SMEG broke down big time and I did not want a repeat of the troubles I had with it.

At Whitfords, I had been approached in the beginning by a salesperson called Mel. Mel continued dealing with me through the weeks it took me to reassure myself, that everything would be ok with a new SMEG oven. Mel was most patient and courteous and reassured me that SMEG had moved on. She said that they have changed the design of their ovens so they would be much more reliable and long lasting. They now have the largest interior of all wall ovens, without being any different in their exterior measurements. I had to take that on advice, but I could see that the construction was more robust and the interior was larger.

There are sophisticated SMEG models that are more advanced, but I chose the simplest oven with the least things to go wrong and was able to negotiate a better price, which was surprisingly ok. This was not just a walk-in experience, I actually needed guidance and reassurance. The transaction had not ended when I went out the door. Nothing could have gone better, and the result is that the atmosphere of my kitchen has lifted, and I can enjoy myself in there.

Whitfords has recently relocated to Camperdown. They don't sell a comprehensive range of appliances, mainly kitchen and laundry. I recommend them to anyone who needs good, committed service for a good price.

Very helpful staff – One of the few places left that still have that personal touch and helpful staff. Fair refund policy too and delivery options.

Great customer service – Ordered Falcon Nexus 110cm for our son. Dealt with [Name Removed] and she was wonderful. Really made an effort to make sure we were happy with everything. Organised delivery for as late as possible and this was adhered to. Thank you [Name Removed] and other staff were helpful but not sure if their names.

Ordinary retail appliances store – Too many staff for such a mediocre store. Upstairs or in the back they have a seconds area. They do the usual things you see on current affairs shows. They deliver the wrong products. They leave out details if they know you won't then buy a product. They have every product at home. Now's the time to buy X, and so on and so on... Yawn! If you want seconds, go to a Seconds store instead. They have better service. In summer it's one of the coldest stores. Their air conditioning is all the way down, and customers are paying for it. If it's very hot outside, you can cool down in the shop. The usual wheeling and dealing of snakeoil saleswomen and men.
