In the past the only snail pellets that have worked have been Baysol Snail Pellets. However, it now appears that this product is no longer available. What's the answer?

Jeff7
Jeff7

Yep - metaldehyde baits banned in many countries, too toxic, kills everything in the soil underneath as well as slugs and snails. Only useless iron based bait sold now. Farmers and commercial growers can still buy bulk packs from their suppliers but not practical unless you set up a clandestine snail bait reselling operation using brown paper bags at your local bowls club.

Great work Yates.Your product is useless . If they,re going to ban stuff ,for supposedly harming wildlife , why don't they ban cats ? Fortunately we can buy PESTMASTER Snail and slug pellets with Metaldehyde in it.

Jeff7
Jeff7

Buy some extra Grant. That metaldehyde product is now totally banned in the UK and Europe so Oz may follow. Then you’ll only be able to buy the useless iron based snail bait. I bought extra packets before Bunnings deleted it.

Hey Jeff and Grant, you can't buy baysol anymore in South Australia. I'm not sure what the situation is in other states. But we can get Transcend from growers supplies and but it only comes in large bags. This is pretty good stuff. It kills millipedes too.

Jeff7
Jeff7

Yes, the last outlets to stock it are growers and farmers supply stores. Difficult for home gardeners to use these large quantities unfortunately. Thanks for the heads up on that product though.

Why has baysol been sold any more? And what has taken its place. Thanks Mark h.

Jeff7
Jeff7

No - it’s been withdrawn from sale (in many countries) as it is considered too toxic for other wildlife. The new ‘safe’ iron based baits are hopeless. The only way to get a decent slug and snail product is to buy a metaldehyde product which is still available from farm supply outlets. But you have to buy 10 kg (the equivalent of 20 consumer cartons). I suggest you form a buying cartel with friends and buy it that way. Metarex is one brand.

Only today l again found all my young veggie plants and new shoots, plus to be harvested veggies ( young green beans and tomatoes) close to about 50% destroyed or eaten and that after using consistently the recommended Yates Snail $ Slug Bait. It is an absolute waste of money and effort using this particular product. It doesn’t matter how much or how little one uses. No comparison to the previous Baysol product.

or 'Yates Blitzem Snail & Slug Pellets', can be used in vegetable and garden beds.

I have found the iron phosphate snail bait to be useless. The snails literally slid over it to get to my plants. My gardens are devastated. I have to use the 'torch and stomp' method to get them under control. The odd one I miss still munch on my plants in preference to the bait. I will have find a supply of the old metaldehyde baits.

Jeff7
Jeff7

I agree - I was out stomping on snails last night. See if the farm supply stores still sell a (big) pack of metaldehyde bait and offer in it in plain brown paper bags at your bowling club. You can become the local supplier of illicit goods.

Have you tried 'Yates Blitzem Snail & Slug Pellets'?

I bought two packets of blitzem last night (I checked first to see if they use metalhaldyne, and they do). Looking forward to spreading it around, although the damage has been done. My fruit tree grafts are killed because I thought the iron phosphate bait would protect them. Not so. The snails crawled over the baits and up the stems to have a grand feast on the newly emerged buds! I wish I had known there was a difference between the two bait types before 'using' the rubbish one.

hi what can i use to kill slaters please

Jeff7
Jeff7

Try the new iron based snail bait and see if it works. The only alternative is trying to buy some metaldehyde snail and slug product from a farming supply store. That product is now more strictly controlled. Big pack sizes so may not be an option. Slaters usually only eat decomposing material - they don’t attack fresh wood or crops. They may not be causing much damage.

Yates

I am sorry we don't have a product that will treat slaters.

This article has some great hints to try and eradicate them.

I’ve tried the new iron based products and they’re useless. My only suggestion if you live close to a farming supply store is to try there. They used to sell the old snail bait but they are much bigger bags.

I’ve tried the new iron based products - only average. I know they’re safer but I’ve gone back to the first generation snail bait which isn’t very waterproof but it is cheap. If you use a whole packet over the course of a wet spring month and do a few nightly snail patrols with a torch and pair of gum boots you can knock off a lot of snails.

Where can I purchase some of your base all snail and slug bait I live in Blackburn South Victoria

Jeff7
Jeff7

Looks like it has been withdrawn from sale - no longer on Yates website and out of stock everywhere. The new eco iron based slug and snail bait is useless - I have tried it. Just go back to buying cheap metaldehyde snail bait like Yates Blitzem or Defender that Bunnings sells. It’s not very waterproof but it’s cheap. If you start using it in spring when the new plants are in your garden you can knock back snail numbers a lot. (Plus a few snail patrols on wet nights to squash anything you find).

Hello Where am I able to purchase Baysol (blue) Snail&Slug Pellets. It seems to be hard to find in Perth WA. Thanks

FAY.
FAY.

The snails have eaten all of my buds on bulbs and all of my herbs this year. All of the ‘green’ brands, snails consider them an entree to my garden. I so miss the only effective snail control. Not available in Victoria. BAYSOL. Perhaps it could come in a bottle with a child proof lid - as do our medicines! Why not? They are not banned!

Jeff7
Jeff7

I googled Baysol Perth and found a couple of garden centres that list it. Dawsons Garden World and Guildford Garden Centre. Phone them. If no luck, see if Yates has a helpline in Oz and ask them for stockists.
