Six years on!

published

This is our fifth post on the Francis. Its six years since we bought it new and its now done over 100,000ks. In the last eighteen months / two yeas we have had been on many rough roads anf done extensive free camping. The van trails well and has never leaked. Everything works as it should and its a reliable comfy unit. We have added a CTEK charger and upgraded the two batteries to another 120amp. We made the right decision when we purchased this van and if we upgraded we would most likely buy another AVAN van.
One other point is the ALKO torsion suspension. We were nit entirely sure when we bought the van. We were used to coil or leaf spring. Six years on couldn't recommend it enough.

Purchased in May 2015 at Avan.

Load capacity

published

Happy with van and layout and all small problems fixed by either dealer or product warranty. Our main problem is weight as atm is well over stated limit.
We purchased van from stock at penrith it has oven air con and awning fitted presumably at factory which I would hope is include in tare.
We have 2 water tanks and coupled with the hot water this gives 200 litres so 200 kg this leaves only 100 kg for every thing else if as stated the air etc is included in tare
Has anyone up dated chassis etc to accomodate greater load capacity .axle rating is 1600 kg

Avan Frances HT560 - nice van but After sale service not so nice

published

After delay in getting the van (9 months from deposit taken) Van was not the colour we ordered and missing items, picnic table, LED lighting, outside shower that we were clearly told were included and thank goodness I took photos of when ordering the van. Had to push to have installed which they did. Took a trip up north, towed well and comfortable van. Things required to get fixed: leaking vanity, ensuite door fell off hinge (hat not used it) and asked for service. Went back week later service not done, items fixed but van left with dirty floor, black mark on wall, glue and wood shaving in vanity. Due to poor customer service, will not go back or recommend AVAN.

Bad experiences

Bad workmanship, poor quality & poor customer care. What can you say... an Australian company that we thought we would patronise, never again. Workmanship of this quality makes you understand why there is no manufacturing left in Australia. Our NEW avan Frances is a total disaster & a huge disappointment.

Avan Francis - fantastic van but dreadful workmanship lets it down

published

Before I make a comment I must say I love our avan Francis - great design. Just purchased a 2012 Avan Francis from private seller in western nsw. The poor workmanship really lets this lovely van down. The veneer on most of the cupboard doors is peeling off, there is a major crack about 30cm long on the internal lining and in one of the cupboards and the fan in bathroom makes dreadful noise as it is catching on something and plastic edging around seating is coming away. This is appalling for a van that is two years old. Unfortunately the van is just out of warranty. Now we know why there was a tube of quick grip in kitchen cupboard. Be careful when buying an Avan!!

Recently hired one of these vans and went touring Outback NSW.This van has a very nice layout with the ensuite at the back of the van.We found the basin in the ensuite is too small for anything other than washing your hands and the mattress not that comfortable. This van has free camping possibilities but a generator would be recommended.Definately not a van you can take on inferior roads as the interior window trims are inadequately fastened to the body of the van and are prone to come loose when subjected to vibration. We also found the Perspex windows to be of suspect quality as one broke for no apparent reason near the window latch. The water pump was also fairly noisy when in use.

Brilliant van with some initial problems

published

Bought Dec 2012 after waiting 5 months delivery. Design and finish 5 star- workmanship 3 star - dealer support 5 star. After 2 years and about 10k travelling on back roads and Birdsville track it is pretty impressive.

Good design, poor workmanship.

published

Poor quality control in factory, cupboard doors not lining up and/or crooked, trimming unstuck in several areas, wheel cover did not fit. Large dirty shoe marks over top of bed base and seat base. Some door locks sticking. Overall, disappointed with workmanship. Our old van (Olympic Sprinter) was much more solidly constructed than this new one.
Good size - had everything we required in a new van.

Trying to find out why our 2 x 95ltr. water tanks seem to run out so quickly when free camping. Last trip we allowed water to drain into 10Ltr. buckets so as to record usage. We used approx. 100 ltrs. and our LT109-4 gauge was already showing less that a 1/4 tank left.
When filling tanks I wait until water flows from breather hole. We use the water sparingly but it's as if one tank never fills properly. Has anyone else had this problem?

Similar thing happened to us. The pipe between the two tanks could be larger: when I full up and the water comes out of the spout, I wait 15 minutes and then fill up again. It will take a lot more. Usually do it 3 times until both tanks are chockers. Usually lasts us 5 or 6 days.

Hardtop 560 Frances

2013 Frances. First trip in it the water pump decided not to work. There is no 12-13 volts at the pump with 12volt switch on and tap open. Any tips on problem solving and where do I locate the components? Thanks.

Check the wires connection to the battery. If they are connected properly, maybe you batter is buggered. Use a multimeter to test battery voltage. This is not in lieu of a load test. If all else fails, take it to an auto electrician and get him to do a load test on the battery

Thanks John.V.
Battery is brand spanker 120AH and all other electrical fittings work okay, but I will try to trace the wiring again. My multimeter detects voltage elsewhere just not on the wires to the pump when the tap is open. Being at least the third owner and finding some questionable wiring solutions adds to the challenge. I was wondering if there is a sensor in the water plumbing that switches 12V to the pump on when you open a tap? Trouble is I don't know what it would be called, what it looks like and where it could be located.
